Professional Site for Freelance Gigs
This is a professional site where large enterprise down to small companies use to find freelancers. There are short to ongoing gigs and you choose what to accept. Rating each other has always been fair. You get paid weekly and always on time. I've been using Upwork as a freelancer for at least 5 years quite successfully.

It’s great overall for ease of use between hirers and freelancers. Wish there was some more flexibility on hours submissions - this feels clunky sometimes.
Makes it so easy for my clients to manage hiring and work with me.
It’s also great when working with large corporations with slow payment timescales- usually I’d be waiting months for payment but with upwork I can set up regular payouts.
I also find the support very helpful and responsive.

Okay for new Freelancers
I've been working as a freelancer on Upwork since I got my first contact in 2016. Overall, I've been grateful for the ability to find and connect with some many clients over the years.
However, the last few years, since it went public, you can tell that it has become more concerned with getting more and more money from it's freelancers. From changing their tiered fees to a flat rate (which took long time clients from 5% to 10%) and their use of connects for proposals and advertising.
Personally, I think it is okay if you're new and need experience, but I would recommend building you're own business asap.

Solid platform, but visibility takes real work
Upwork has been a good platform for building my freelance design and marketing business, but it's not without its ups and downs. On the positive side, it's well organized, payments come through reliably, and the client base is serious, people are actually hiring for real projects. As a Shopify CRO and landing page specialist, I've been able to connect with clients I wouldn't have found otherwise.
That said, staying visible is genuinely hard. There are stretches where work flows steadily, and then quieter periods where you're competing hard just to get noticed, even with a strong profile. The platform also nudges you toward paid upgrades (Connects, Freelancer Plus, etc.), which can add up when you're between projects and not earning yet. It takes patience and consistency to build momentum, this isn't a place where things happen overnight.
Overall, it's a legitimate platform worth investing time in if you're serious about freelancing, just go in with realistic expectations about the slow periods.
