For weeks the Tuta mail app hasn’t been working on both my iPad and iPhone. To read my mail, I have to go to webmail.
There is no useful customer service. There are a number of standard solutions one can see, but none for my problem. I did a reset on my iPhone and iPad to no avail.
I reinstalled the Tuta mail app several times: no result.
I can't believe this happened to me after subscribing for one month on the so-called "Revolutionary" plan.
I initially purchased on 2026-08-23, via the iOS mobile app 'Tuta Mail'. Upon subscribing and having paid the plan, my Tuta account immediately become with error pop-ups, and wanting to send "reports" (which doesn't function at all).
I'm flabbergasted by this bad experience having paid for a subscription NOT applied at all on my Tuta account. Since the subscription plan was non-existant at all, I requested a full refund from Apple's App Store, and they credited back to me the amount owed.
But when I contact manually with another email provider, to hello [at] tutao.de, your customer service representative says: "The email address you have sent does not exist. Please review your records to make sure the address is entered correctly. Once you have located the email address we can check the status of your account."
I don't understand why your CS representative said this, when I can log in back with my Tuta email address provided to the agent, and password to see my inbox, but the interface still show error pages that won't load properly.
I want to revert my account back to Free, which worked initially prior to having paid a subscription at all, and to be on a fully functional state again. If Tuta Support resolves this issue, I would be happy to delete this user review (only when this is fully completed).

I am a long term user of Tuta and I won't be switching to any other email provider any time soon. No other email provider has such a strong focus on ethics and privacy. While they aren't the most technologically sophisticated provider, I am happy to take that as a trade off for stronger ethics.
Smaller businesses which are focused on sustainability, ethics, privacy, etc. don't always (and shouldn't) have the backing of huge venture capital firms. If you care about these values then you have to get used to products which aren't always cutting edge purely because the companies don't have the money to be at the cutting edge.
Tuta does everything that I need it to do and I have almost never experienced true problems with their software that I couldn't sort myself or find a solution to. And when I have had to speak with their support team I have ALWAYS immediately been in contact with a highly knowledgable HUMAN. That itself is worth twice what I pay for Tuta's services.
Stop expecting Tuta to be Gmail. They are not and never will be and that is a GOOD thing!

Tom at Tuta Mail went above and beyond to help me out. He was responsive, patient, and really took the time to make sure my issue was resolved. Great experience—would definitely recommend reaching out to their support team. Thanks, Tom!

I find it absolutely disgusting that, simply because I didn't log in for six months, my account was completely deleted with no possibility of recovery—and now, if I want to create a new one, I actually have to pay.

Hi there. Please note that we make it clear in our terms of service upon signup for Tuta Mail that free accounts will be deleted, in the case of 6 months inactivity. This deletion due to inactivity is only for free accounts. We have this policy in place to help clear up space and it enables us to continue to offer a private email service for free to others globally.
----------------
Yes, it’s true that you mention this at the time of registration, but I still find it disgusting. A user doesn't keep track of how much time has passed since their last login, and since it’s an email service designed specifically for privacy, they likely won't even get a notification alerting them. One day, they simply find themselves without an account and unable to read their past emails.

You can get the address back by adding it as an alias to a Premium account: -link-

There is no way I’m going to pay money just to fix this problem. It’s not really an upgrade to my plan; it wouldn’t be something I choose to do to get better perks, but rather something I’d do to resolve an issue that has come up.

Alternatively you are welcome to register a new free account.
-----------------
What for? Any emails received in the past would be lost anyway, and many sites I’ve registered with, require verification via an OTP sent to the old email address—which I no longer have access to.
After an ordeal like this, the last thing I’d want to do is create another account, and I’d advise anyone else against doing so, too.

made an email account thru here, have it connected to stuff and all of a sudden cant login . account is no more then 2 months old keeps saying invalid credentials even tho its not wrong, has now locked me out which is tied to other things so now i cant access that either. absolute joke in 32 years of life ive never had a bs issue like this with an email address, when you try to use recovery key it doesnt work either. what a joke

I've been a free member for many years now. But I've gone through a lot of health problems (elderly and disabled) this year and haven't logged in since early this year. I tried to log in today, and I got an error message that my account had been deleted because I hadn't logged in for 6 months. A six-month absence results in an account deletion? Seriously. That's unreal. I had important content in there that I would have forwarded to my Google account if I had received any sort of warning. I had some pictures of my late father in one email that can't be replaced. I can understand if the account hasn't been used in a year. But deleting people's accounts after 6 months shouldn't be a thing. Because people have illnesses in real life.

Nice email service for everyday use. The interface is simple, everything is easy to understand, and the mailbox works normally without extra complications. I like that it feels more private than many regular email services.

Forgot my password on one of my devices , registered just to get mail support , “we can’t prove it’s your account and can’t help “ is the main spirit , tho they are talking with me through it (I have on device that can enter ) , a proof of payment was provided .
So I paid subscription for NOTHING !!!
Stay away from those thieves
After their answer :
I subscribed especially for mail support , u were talking to me through that mail , provided a screenshot of the transaction , “we can’t access Apple Store transactions bla bla bla “ .
I’m happy apple ar least agreed with me and refunded me fully .
Do the math

TL;DR:
Overall, a great privacy-minded provider but there's still room for improvement.
I've been using Tuta (formerly Tutanota) now for a few years and overall I'm happy with it though I must say it has been a bumpy road at times.
I've experienced twice being locked out of my account on PC due to some security settings on their end which blocked 'suspicious' IP addresses. This was to improve security but locked out some legitimate users (I wasn't the only one).
Eventually it was resolved but caused quite a bit of frustration at the time.
Haven't experienced it again since (luckily!).
If you contact support, expect to have some patience as it can sometimes take a day or two before receiving a reply. Once, I even didn't receive a reply at all or they didn't properly read my issue/request as the answer was not on point.
But so far my frustrations.
On all other aspects, I think Tuta really values and respects privacy which, for me, was the main reason to switch. They are also transparant as far as I can tell which is also respectable (and important!).
In the beginning I also compared it to their competitor(s) such as Proton and while Proton offers much more and a better overall ecosystem, they are much more expensive. On the other hand, Tuta increased their price a while back and tries to push users to upgrade. Something I didn't like at the time as privacy, transparency and price are the main points for me.
However, I did upgrade as I felt it was worth it and I needed a bit more storage for my emails.
They are also working on new upgrades so while going slower, I think they will also offer more in the future such as file storage ('drive'). I just hope they won't force things on users and/or increase prices as that could stear me away.
I also did some digging on Proton and there are some 'shady practices' a few years back which made me trust them less than Tuta.
Someone complained about receiving spam. I can't say much about it as I don't receive much spam but you can block addresses or even complete domains (blacklist) which works as expected. On the other hand, spam often comes to people who subscribe to all kinds of mailing lists so the first defence in spam is the user's actions...
I also use my custom domain which works perfectly with Tuta and gives me all the control I need over mail. I can recommend it to everyone! You need to dig into it a bit to set it up (as a novice) but Tuta can help and even have help pages which describes how to do it.
Conclusion: see TL;DR at the beginning.

I like using Tuta (formerly “Tutanoa”). It IS different to other providers but they all different and have different advantages. This service absolutely has great customer service and who provided me easy step by step instructions and I was able to access a paid account on an amazing sale (and their normal prices are still excellent). So I look forward to watch the next phase as this one has gone very well so far. If you’re looking for new secure email to maintain your privacy and wellbeing and/or you’re unsure about bundles or having all information services in one place, I’d definitely recommend seeing in the trial phase or a free account on its own if you think Tuta might be able to provide a home for you. I am glad for the account here.

ABSOLUTE SCAMMERS MAN !
I'M WITHIN THE 14 BUSINESS DAYS TO REQUEST A REFUND.
I REQUESTED A REFUND BECAUSE THEIR EMAIL SERVICE IS ABSOLUTELY GARBAGE AND I DON'T PLAN ON CONTINUE USING IT.
SO AS I'M WITHIN THE 14 BUSINESS DAY FROM CONSUMER PROTECTION LAWS PERIOD, TO REQUEST IT, I DONE IT BUT THIS IDIOTS DID NOT HONORED THE REFUND REQUEST AT ALL SO FAR AND ARE = WASTING MY TIME (SO THE 14 DAYS TIME TIME PASSES / EXPIRES AND I DON'T GET MY RIGHTFUL REFUND PAID)
SO BIG TIME SCAMMERS THEY ARE, MAN !
NOT HAPPY WITH THIS PEOPLE AT ALL !
REPLY THE TICKETS AND REFUND MY MONEY SCAMMERS !

It's a nice idea, but a very frustrating experience.
I don't know how many times I moved stuff to spam but it kept coming back and coming back.
And then I would get an email explaining how they had made spam much better. But it wasn't true. It doesn't learn. It just keeps coming and coming!
Nothing quite works how it should, and when it comes to leaving, that's also difficult. You can't just cancel. You have to manually stop all the paid features, and even then I kept getting a message to remove my contact lists, but I had already removed them so I didn't have anything to remove.
After that, they asked me to send the email I used for PayPal so they could cancel.
I sent this back, as asked, waited the standard two (at least) days to get a reply, but it just another template response, asking me to send the requested items, which I already had!
And still my simple cancellation is not resolved. I don't know what else I can do. I just want to be free of this nightmare.
What's particularly annoying, is that in the end, I believe they just deleted my account, without so much as an email notification. I gave them my personal email to send an email too, but they did not. I just lost access to my account, with all my old emails, and now no way to access or download them.
I started out really wanting to like Tuta. Now I really hate them.
Nice idea, bad execution. Avoid!!!

I am a light user and in no way spammy or abusive. I have twice had a brand new email setup with Tuta get locked with no explanation. Email is critical and this makes the service completely useless. This is not a case of inactivity for 6 months, it's a brand new email being locked within the month. Fortunately, before I converted the account to paid.
With any other service, you'll at least have had the chance to download all your messages into your email app of choice so you won't lose them. But since tuta locks all your emails in their server you're basically stuffed. Well, you can jump through some hoops to export specific emails into .eml files, but this is not a realistic solution and you'd have to do it regularly before the unexpected ban.
Edit reply to below: Based on other reviews, it seems to very much be the case. It's probably because I had a VPN on when I made the account - just a guess. Of course, that's pretty normal for someone who cares about privacy. Also, I did not send any emails and just wanted this so I could have privacy in email-based account signups. Recovery code also fails, it's clearly an intentional suspension and not just a forgotten password or such.
Followup 2: 2 months later, I just got an email from trustpilot asking for more info low key threatening to remove my review - I assume at the behest of Tuta. The info they want includes my full name and phone number. From a privacy email service. I actually do have a paid account with them, which I will soon cancel.

I was shopping around for privacy respecting email providers when I found Tuta.
I had been reading that they were competition to Proton and wanted to try it out. As I have my own custom domain I decided to sign up for one month on their Revolutionary plan.
Almost immediately, (within 2 days), I noticed a special promotion for 50% their annual plans. Even though I still had limited experience with their service, I thought that was a decent gamble and decided I would switch over to the annual plan. When trying to do so I was only given the full price option - likely as I was subscribed to their monthly plan. Less than 10 days into first signing up the advertised offer was no longer available.
I received a developer response on the App Store about this saying the offer was ‘for new customers only.’ After only signing up less than 10 days ago, I thought I was a new customer.
Now I’m not a customer at all.
I was willing to pay them money for a trial and because of that I was locked out of an advertised sale. Customer service was dismissive. I think it’s perfectly reasonable to want to test something out before committing to it for a year. And doing so shouldn’t block you out of current promotions.
During this, I had almost done the exact same thing with Proton. When contacting Proton about this they helped me switch over from my month trial to an annual plan. At that point, my decision was made.
I don’t recommend this service.
Edit: (July 7, 2026)
In regards to Tuta’s response to my review,
This response only further shows Tuta’s utter lack of customer service in still not recognizing a customer of only a week as a new customer. And then just shrugging off potential business and a year commitment.
If they’re so brazen to do that, you can be assured they will throw you under the bus too.
Don’t use this service.

Tuta constantly harangues users to upgrade. I quit using their email, but kept the calendar for simplistic holiday and b-day rembrances, and tuta still constantly wants me to upgrade to a paid plan! I don't know why they offer a free plan when they badger users to upgrade! Tuta is like a poorly trained Dog that constantly and annoyingly barks and begs for no reason! I would recommend Mailfence because they do not harangue or badger users!
I use Mailfence as my primary email, for free!
Tuta just responded that they only push upgrades if I try and use a feature that is not in the free plan! That Is Sooo Not True! Tuta pushes a fullscreen Choose a Plan page, Ordering you to"Choose a Plan", and Free Plans are not a choice when they do this! You can click later and it will reappear when you next try to use your email or calendar! You can not get rid of it without interacting with it! This is Rude!
Shortly before I wrote my first review, I'd opened Tuta, to look at the calendar and see if I had any events! Tuta displayed their fullscreen "Choose a Plan" as soon as the app opened! I had not done anything! I quit emailing on Tuta because they did their Choose a Plan every few days. I was only using Tuta to email myself between 2 of my cell phones!
One phone is screenshot and photo storage. I pull a few photos and screenshots off it daily to email to friends via Mailfence! And I even contacted Tuta once asking why they wanted me to buy a plan when I used their email service for virtually nothing, but the aforementioned uses!
Tuta never responded to my query!

I’m really sorry to see that others have had a bad experience with Tuta and have rated it poorly. I’ve been with them for a while now and I only had one lock out where I couldnt login to my account for a few days. Yes I had to use an alternate email to contact support and it was very inconvenient, however that only happened once. I strongly support their mission and appreciate the fact that they are a small company and things can go wrong, its tech, things do go wrong, what I value is transparency and learning from mistakes. If it kept crashing and nobody cared, that would be a different story. But even looking at the bad reviews here, looks like they are making effort to resolve. From my experience coming from big tech, I would still highly recommend it. And not sure why some claim that positive reviews are paid, from my end, I leave my positive review and I dont need an incentive. My incentive is that the world needs more companies like these guys, who can challenge the bog tech, and if we, the users dont support them, who else will? Make a choice, chose privacy, chose a paid service. Because if you get something for free, then you are paying in something that you just dont see. Sorry to break it to you, but nothing comes free in this world and that is normal, that is okay, as the long as the cost is reasonable - they have to make a living and the services cost to run.

When on the free plan there's no way unsubscribe from their marketing emails. That's not privacy friendly and I'm sure it's non-compliant with GDPR.
For a basic email service they're fine, but it feels like a dead product. Whenever there's a new release, which is already rare, it's a oneliner changelog containing a small fix
