**Friendly when taking payment, dismissive when you need help**
My experience with Petplan Spain has been disappointing, particularly around payment transparency and customer service.
During my first year, I paid for the policy in monthly instalments. When it renewed, I was told I had agreed from the beginning that the entire second year would need to be paid in full. I do not remember this ever being clearly explained to me, and several friends who use Petplan had exactly the same understanding and were also surprised by this.
I have now found out that I need to relocate permanently to the UK. As I have already paid for the full year, I contacted Petplan to ask whether there was any possibility of a partial refund, credit or goodwill arrangement, particularly as I was considering continuing with Petplan UK.
I understand that Petplan UK uses a different insurer and that the Spanish policy cannot simply be transferred. I also understand that the contract may not entitle me to a refund. However, I found the response unnecessarily blunt and dismissive. When I asked whether they could consider the situation from a customer-retention or goodwill perspective, the reply began with “As I mentioned, this isn’t a customer retention issue” and they made it clear that they were not interested in escalating or exploring any alternative.
When payment was due, communication was extremely friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, that same standard of customer service disappeared as soon as I needed help with something outside the usual process.
I would advise anyone considering Petplan Spain to ask for written confirmation of how future renewals must be paid and to understand that, even if you pay the annual premium in full and your circumstances change, you may receive no refund for the unused period.

Everything is covered... until it's not
I had Petplan pet insurance for five years in Spain. Our Border Collie Mollie ruptured her cruciate in year one, which was covered and had no issues until 4 plus years later when her other cruciate ruptured out of the blue. Despite advertising everywhere that everything is covered, Petplan did not pay a cent of the 2,500€ bill. Their own team of experts, not the vets, estimated that it was the same condition, a degenerative bone issue that Mollie has never been diagnosed with. We were left out of pocket and extremely disappointed, with Petplan saying it was down to the insurer and not them. That's despite them advertising all costs are covered.

We would like to clarify that this was not a case of “everything is covered until it’s not,” but rather the application of the policy conditions following a veterinary assessment.
In this case, and based on the documentation received, the veterinary experts who assess the cases have determined that the pet has a degenerative disease involving chronic and progressive degradation of the ligament fibers. While the first rupture was covered, this second rupture, being due to the same disease and having reached the policy limits, would be excluded.
We understand that from an owner’s perspective, this can feel like a completely new and unrelated event. However, the assessment was carried out by independent veterinary experts based on clinical history and medical criteria, not as a discretionary decision.

Great prices on pet liability insurance
I used Petplan to provide legally required liability insurance for my dogs while in Spain. Petplan's prices are very competitive, and their website is reasonably user friendly. I have not had to make a claim with PetPlan, so I cannot rate them on that service. However, I found their price and ease of getting the required policies very easy.
