Scam

The order was delivered in a complete mess. One bottle was completely shattered and several other bottles were damaged, including bottles that were intended as gifts.

I contacted Bottle of Italy multiple times by email, attaching multiple photographs that clearly showed the broken bottle, shattered glass and the condition of the parcel. Despite this, I never received a single response.

I have now waited several weeks without any acknowledgement, explanation, refund or proposed solution. The complete lack of customer service after receiving a severely damaged order is absolutely unacceptable.

Based on my experience, I would strongly advise against ordering from this company. Taking a customer's money and then completely ignoring repeated complaints about damaged goods is outrageous.

Dear James,

We are very sorry to read about your experience and about the condition in which your order arrived.

We have carefully checked our customer service records and, at the moment, we cannot find any open support ticket under the name James. The few cases we have previously received under this name regarding damaged shipments have already been resolved.

We would therefore kindly ask you to contact us directly at info@bottleofitaly.com, preferably including your order number and the photographs of the damaged parcel and bottles. This will allow us to identify your order immediately, understand why your previous messages may not have reached our customer service team, and provide you with the appropriate assistance.

We certainly do not intend to leave a customer without a response or a solution in the event of goods being damaged during transport, and we would appreciate the opportunity to investigate and resolve this matter as quickly as possible.

Kind regards,
Bottle of Italy

A great company turned bad

The European Union Consumer Rights Directive (Directive 2011/83/EU) protects consumers' rights in online purchases. Among other protections, it provides a 14-day right of withdrawal, allowing consumers to cancel most distance contracts without giving a reason. Based on my experience, Bottle of Italy appears to have acted in a manner that is inconsistent with these consumer protections. I also echo the critical reviews here that point out that Bottle of Italy seems to have declined in quality, but I personally believe those reviews are far too lenient.

I had a fairly good experience with Bottle of Italy last year. Shipping took ages because they do not appear to keep many of the products they sell in stock, but apart from that, the process went smoothly.

I placed a new order some time ago and patiently waited, only to be informed that several of the products were unavailable. I was encouraged either to wait until the following month in case newer vintages arrived or to choose alternative items. Instead, I requested a full refund for the entire order, as the order was terribly late.

They then waited for a month and forcefully shipped my cancelled order, apparently hoping that I would simply accept it. I am aware that a representative of the company will likely reply to this review claiming that they reacted immediately and contacted me by email, but that did not happen. Do not be misled by these excuses, which appear frequently in their responses on this platform as well. If necessary, I am happy to provide proof.

My refund request was met with complete silence across all communication channels, for which I also have evidence. This appears to be an intentional strategy aimed at encouraging customers to give up and move on. As a result, I was forced to escalate the matter through both PayPal and American Express. I strongly recommend not using a payment method that lacks buyer protection when ordering from this company.

They did not respond promptly to either the refund request or the PayPal dispute. Instead, they deliberately delayed the process, forcing me to wait until the deadline of the escalated case because Bottle of Italy was unwilling to issue a refund unless absolutely necessary.

Even after American Express had reviewed the evidence, ruled in my favor, and returned my money, Bottle of Italy still informed me that they would not refund the order. They eventually contacted me and explained that they did not have most of the bottles I had ordered, so they shipped only two bottles while retaining payment for an order of eight. When I pointed out that this amounted to taking money for goods they never delivered, they responded that they were not stealing my money; they were simply keeping it.

If you take a close look at the reviews here, a consistent pattern quickly becomes apparent.

Whenever a customer is dissatisfied, Bottle of Italy is quick to shift the blame onto the customer, as though the customer somehow became responsible for the order after placing it. There is always an excuse, and somehow that excuse is always unrelated to the company's own actions. According to them, the customer ordered the wrong products, their supposedly prompt communication must have ended up in a spam folder, or some other explanation conveniently absolves the company of responsibility. It is always the customer's fault.

Even when customers complain about slow shipping, Bottle of Italy tries to suggest that the customer somehow caused the delay, which is absurd. Once an order has been placed, the customer has no control over the speed of processing or delivery. Furthermore, as can be seen in their responses on this platform, Bottle of Italy likes to claim that some wines are "made to order," as though the winemaking process begins only after a customer places an order. This is plainly misleading.

The pattern described above is a major red flag and a clear sign of deeply immature customer service. Hopefully, one day, someone will put an end to it, because this experience marks the end of my relationship with the company. Most reputable businesses in this industry would never stoop so low as to blame their customers for the company's own mistakes.

Please note that, as mentioned above, a response to this review will likely appear shortly, claiming that Bottle of Italy did everything correctly and that I, as the customer, somehow failed to do my part. That appears to be their modus operandi.

Dear Customer,

We are sorry that this situation has caused you such frustration. However, we must clarify that we have never intended to ignore your requests or retain payment for undelivered products.

You have been in direct contact with our manager, who confirmed that the refund will be issued. As a payment dispute has already been opened, we must now follow the procedure and processing times established by the payment provider.

We do not blame our customers. Our replies are intended solely to clarify the documented facts and the actions taken to resolve each case.

Kind regards,

AVOID THIS COMPANY

AVOID THIS COMPANY. Absolutely appalling customer service.

We placed an order worth over €300 in MAY. What arrived was clearly not our order, it was a painting. We immediately told the delivery driver that the package was incorrect and that we did not want to accept it. We were told we had to accept it and arrange a return afterwards.

And that was the beginning of an absolutely ridiculous THREE-MONTH ordeal.

We have emailed Bottle of Italy countless times. Instead of taking responsibility for their mistake and resolving it, we have been met with excuses about vacations, workload and delays, while our €300+ order remains missing.

After 2.5 months, they finally arranged for someone to collect the painting. I genuinely feel sorry for whoever ordered it, because presumably they have also been wondering where their order has been all this time.

Our own shipment? Still missing.

Bottle of Italy will not refund us. They will not resend the products. Instead, they apparently expect the missing shipment to somehow be found — despite the fact that THEY labelled/shipped the orders incorrectly in the first place.

How exactly are we supposed to locate a parcel that we never received and for which we don't even have a valid tracking number?

To make matters worse, our order contained a fresh product. It has now been THREE MONTHS. Even if the parcel magically appears, how could we possibly trust that the product is still fresh, usable or has been stored correctly?

This was their mistake. Yet three months later, we are the ones left without our products and without our €300+ refund.

No replacement.
No refund.
Hardly any replies.
No meaningful attempt to resolve a problem they caused.

I cannot remember ever experiencing customer service this bad.

DO NOT PURCHASE FROM BOTTLE OF ITALY. If anything goes wrong with your order, based on our experience, you may find yourself spending months chasing them while they hold on to your money.

Reply from Bottle of Italy

Dear Customer,

We are sincerely sorry for the frustration this situation has caused you. However, we would like to clarify an important point regarding your review.

The parcel containing the painting was not prepared or shipped by Bottle of Italy. As we have explained during our correspondence, your shipment was mixed up with another shipment during the couriers’ handling process. Therefore, the incorrect parcel you received was not the result of an error in the preparation or labelling of your order at our warehouse.

For the past three months, we have repeatedly contacted DPD, opened claims and followed up with them in an attempt to resolve the situation and arrange the collection of the incorrectly delivered parcel. Unfortunately, the time required by the courier to manage these procedures is outside our direct control.

DPD has now informed us that, due to their current operational procedures, they are unable to arrange the exchange directly. For this reason, we provided you with the telephone number, email address and shipment reference supplied by the courier so that you can contact the destination partner directly and coordinate the recovery and delivery of your correct order.

We fully understand your dissatisfaction with the time this process has taken. However, we cannot agree with the statement that we have made no meaningful attempt to resolve the issue. We have been following your case for months, repeatedly contacting the courier and providing you with all the information and instructions received from them.

At this stage, we kindly ask you to contact the number or email address we provided, as requested by the courier, so that the parties handling the shipments locally can coordinate the delivery of your correct order.

Kind regards,
Bottle of Italy Staff

The good, the bad and the ugly from BoI

I ordered and paid for DPD Express shipping (48-72 hours) on July 29. The order was sent just after I sent an email cancelling my order on august 6. No response to my email at all. Between August 6 and 13 I inquired about the progress of the package since it seemed to be stuck in transfer somewhere. No reply from BoI. August 13 the package arrived, in a sturdy “secured” box (hence the extra star in the rating).

Good product, good packaging, lousy communication and extreme slow shipping despite using an Express service.

Dear Customer,

We are sorry for the inconvenience and fully understand your disappointment regarding the delivery time.

Unfortunately, during this period DPD experienced significant delays and operational issues at several of its hubs, which affected delivery times. Once a parcel has been handed over to the courier, transit delays are unfortunately outside our direct control. We have been working with DPD for several weeks to address these disruptions and reduce their impact on our customers.

We are nevertheless pleased to hear that your order eventually arrived safely, that the packaging protected the products properly, and that you were satisfied with the products themselves.

Thank you for your feedback and for your patience during this particularly difficult period with the courier.

Kind regards,
Bottle of Italy

Exceptional Wine and Outstanding Service

I’m extremely happy with the wine I purchased. The quality exceeded my expectations, and you can truly taste the passion and craftsmanship behind it.

It’s especially wonderful to be able to buy wine directly from small Italian producers. Supporting family-run wineries while enjoying authentic, high-quality wines makes the whole experience even more special.

I will definitely be ordering again. Highly recommended!

Dear Customer,

We are sorry that you were disappointed with your purchase.

However, we would like to clarify that UK VAT, import duties and excise taxes are not included in our prices. This information is clearly stated in our Shipping Information section before placing an order, where we explain that these charges are determined by UK customs authorities and must be paid by the importer before delivery.

Unfortunately, these fees are entirely outside our control, and we cannot influence or predict their amount.

Dear Customer,

We are sorry to hear about your experience. Unfortunately, in some cases the shipping carrier may return a parcel to the sender after it reaches the destination country due to reasons beyond our control, such as address verification, or carrier operational decisions.

Our customer service team is always available to investigate the situation and find the best possible solution, whether that means arranging a replacement shipment or discussing an alternative resolution.

Please feel free to contact us directly if you have not already done so we will be happy to assist you.
