I would strongly caution anyone…

I would strongly caution anyone considering American Van Lines to think very carefully before paying a deposit or handing over their belongings. My experience was extremely disappointing. I would not use this company again. The first major issue was the price. I relied on the original quote and the promises made when I booked the move. Once the move was underway, the cost increased substantially and additional charges became an issue. That is especially concerning once your belongings are already in their hands. The communication was also extremely frustrating. I had difficulty getting clear answers and reliable updates. Information changed depending on who I spoke with and I often felt that I had to chase the company instead of the company keeping me informed. For a long distance move, that is not acceptable.Delivery was another major problem. I experienced delays and uncertainty around the delivery schedule. Looking through other recent customer experiences, I found the same concerns being reported repeatedly. Customers describe shipments sitting in warehouses, delivery dates changing, long delays and having to repeatedly contact the company just to get basic information.Another red flag was the involvement of third party or subcontracted crews. Customers report that pickup or delivery was handled by another company or crew than expected when booking. I also saw reports of trucks being too small, insufficient manpower and customers having to help load or unload their own belongings. That raises serious questions about the service being provided. The handling of belongings is another concern. Recent customers have reported damaged furniture and household items, missing belongings, poor inventory records and problems getting satisfactory responses after damage was reported. Some described belongings being left behind or arriving in multiple deliveries. Others reported having to spend their own time and money dealing with problems that they expected the moving company to handle. The payment issues reported by other customers were particularly concerning because they closely matched the type of problems I experienced. I found recent reports describing original quotes increasing by thousands of dollars, extra packing or material charges, additional money being demanded around delivery and customers feeling pressured to pay unexpected amounts before their belongings would be released. I cannot speak for every customer, but these reports made my own experience more concerning.I also found repeated complaints on Reddit and other consumer platforms about poor communication, price increases, subcontracted movers, delayed deliveries, damaged or missing property and difficult resolutions. These are customer reports, not proof that every allegation is true, but the similarities are difficult to ignore. There are positive reviews for American Van Lines and I am sure some customers have had smooth moves. However, a moving company should be judged not only by what happens when everything goes perfectly but by how it handles problems when things go wrong. That is where my experience fell far short. My advice to anyone considering this company is to get absolutely everything in writing before committing. Confirm the final price and exactly what can increase it. Ask who will physically perform the pickup and delivery. Confirm the truck size, staffing, packing requirements, delivery window, payment requirements and what happens if belongings do not fit. Keep every quote, contract, email and message.Moving your home is already stressful. You should not have to add these problems to it.Based on my own experience and the recurring complaints I found across multiple platforms, I would be very cautious with American Van Lines and personally would choose another company.

Management Let Us Down. The Movers Worked Hard.

We have moved many times and this move from LA to Nashville went sour because of management team.

There were good parts of our experience, which makes what happened afterward even more disappointing.

We paid approximately $12,215 to move across country. I had already packed and meticulously organized most of our home myself. The five-person LA team was incredible. Their focus was disassembling and wrapping furniture, and they had the entire house finished by around 1 PM starting at 7am.

There was an unexpected additional charge because of where their truck could park in our LA neighborhood, something I felt could have been identified beforehand if the property and logistics team had been properly assessed as I requested.

The move fell apart in the handling of our belongings across country and the manager of the subcontracted moving company in Nashville that American Van Lines hired.

Everything I personally packed arrived safely. The significant damage was to furniture and other items handled/wrapped by the movers.

Before the move, I specifically raised concerns about the steep driveway at our Nashville rental, which I had never seen in person, and asked that the local team assess it in person to determine the right truck and approach. That didn't happen.

The truck(s) assigned couldn't access the house. Only two movers were initially assigned, and they had to manually carry our belongings up the hill and bring in additional help. The move-in lasted all day and into the night. I felt terrible for the guys and bought them a late lunch and kept snacks available because they worked incredibly hard.

My issue isn't with those workers. My issue is with the planning that put both them and our belongings in that situation. Comparable and even larger trucks have since successfully driven up the same driveway, which we documented.

American Van Lines did send a repair team, and some items were fixed. I personally repaired others rather than claiming everything that was damaged.

For the remaining items, our documented losses totaled approximately $2,175. American Van Lines offered us $275.

Consumer warning: understand exactly what valuation coverage you're signing. We didn't purchase the more expensive full-value protection, so their offer is based largely on item weight rather than actual replacement cost. One dining chair alone cost $299 to replace.

I went above and beyond preparing the claim, researching purchase information, replacement costs and weights and providing photos. We weren't asking for an enormous payout. Our entire claim was less than 20% of what we paid for the move and didn't include items we repaired ourselves.

What has ultimately made this an experience the worst is the lack of accountability afterward.

Our claim was acknowledged in April and we were told it would be completed by June 8. It is now September.

We've exchanged 20+ emails, made multiple phone calls, rejected the $275 offer in writing, been promised management follow-up that never happened, and most recently sent the entire history and documentation directly to an adjuster and manager.

Still no response.

Mistakes happen during moves. What defines a company is what happens after something goes wrong.

We've been patient, reasonable and thorough, yet somehow we're still the ones doing all the work.

My advice: read the valuation fine print, INSIST unusual access issues at BOTH properties are assessed before moving day, and document everything.

At this point, I cannot recommend American Van Lines for a major interstate move. If they finally take ownership and resolve our claim fairly, I will gladly update this review.

I hope they give me a reason to do so.

Very disappointing experience with…

Very disappointing experience with American Van Lines. The move did not go as planned, communication was poor and unprofessional, and I faced financial loss along with damage to my products, equipment, and appliances. The way my concerns were handled only added to the frustration. Based on my experience, I would be very cautious before trusting this company with a move.

Positive experience!

Trevor (our driver) did an excellent job staying in communication with us throughout the move and keeping us updated. We moved from CA to MT, and all items arrived safely, and in good condition. Items were packed as per the quote - would highly recommend Trevor and the team!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I had an excellent experience with Jacques and Rico from American Van Lines. They were professional, hardworking, careful, and genuinely went above and beyond throughout a very long and complicated move.
What impressed me most was the care they took with my belongings and their willingness to work through every challenge that came up. They were respectful of both my furniture and my home, communicated well, and maintained a positive and helpful attitude even after many hours of work.
There were a few logistical challenges during the move that were outside of their control, but Jacques and Rico handled everything they personally could with professionalism and grace. The quality of the individual crew really makes a difference in a move, and these two absolutely deserve recognition.
I would gladly recommend Jacques and Rico and would specifically request them again for a future move. Thank you both for making a very big moving day so much easier!

The absolute worst most incompetent…

The absolute worst most incompetent company I have ever worked with. I hired this moving company based on their initial quote and clear commitments — a fair price, reliable timing, and specific services. What I experienced was the opposite.

They tried to charge me double the originally quoted price, then demanded an additional $1,000 at delivery. There was zero advance communication about the price changes, no explanation or documentation, and they failed to deliver on the services they promised at the start. Phone calls and messages went unanswered or were ignored. I literally was called 10 minutes before the proposed delivery to inform us of the extra charge and delivery still not on schedule.
I do not recommend this company. If you decide to use them, even if you get everything written and signed, they will still insist on a charging you more on a new invoice on moving day, be prepared for surprise charges and poor communication. Moving is already hard this just makes it worse. On top of that they called and acted concerned but still no resolution or response and they never followed through with what was promised.

Resolved amicably

Update: My issue with American Van Lines has now been resolved amicably. I appreciate their efforts to address my concerns and work toward a fair resolution. While my initial experience was frustrating, I’m glad we were able to resolve the matter professionally. I’m updating my review to reflect the positive outcome and appreciate the team for helping bring the situation to a satisfactory close.

American Van Lines

We hired American Van Lines on short notice after our POD plan fell through. They provided a fair initial quote of about $12,000 and assured us they could meet our timeline. We also paid an additional $2,000 for a guaranteed two-day pickup window instead of the standard three-day option.

The pickup was handled by a subcontractor, City Movers. The crew arrived later in the morning and, despite the extensive pre-packing we had already completed, the process took much longer than expected. My wife and I ended up helping throughout the day, including making trips to the truck and assisting with logistics. Without our help, they likely would have been there well into the night (they left ~7pma). The crew itself seemed reasonably organized, but once they saw the amount of furniture in person, we were informed the shipment would cost roughly $7,000 more than originally quoted, bringing the total to just under $20,000.

After pickup, our belongings were unloaded into a warehouse in Maryland, where they remained for a full week before beginning the cross-country journey. During this time, our primary point of contact changed multiple times, which created confusion. Our final coordinator was helpful when we could reach her, but communication was inconsistent and often required us to proactively seek updates. In several cases, we received more information from a supervisor than from our assigned coordinator. We often knew where our shipment was because of our AirTags, not because of updates from the moving company.

Our belongings were picked up on July 13 and delivered on July 30. The delivery driver contacted us the day before and was easy to coordinate with. When I asked whether a moving crew would be assisting at delivery, I was told it would only be the driver and one additional person. Given the size of our shipment, this was concerning. They arrived around 2:30 PM, and once again, my wife and I spent the entire afternoon helping unload. The crew worked hard, but with only two movers, there simply wasn't enough manpower. They left around 7:30 PM, and without our assistance they would have had to return the following day. Furthermore, we opted out of having them unpack our boxes, which saved many hours.

The biggest issue occurred during delivery. The inventory paperwork provided by City Movers was essentially unusable. While every item had a numbered tag, the inventory sheets did not contain matching number ranges or adequate references. Neither we nor the delivery team could reliably determine whether specific items had arrived. To make matters worse, some listed items, such as an air compressor, had been packed inside boxes, forcing us to open numerous boxes simply to verify the inventory. In the end, we still have no confidence that everything was delivered because there was no practical way to reconcile the shipment against the inventory.

We experienced some minor damage, which we expected given that we've completed multiple military cross-country moves over the years. However, this was by far the most disorganized move we've experienced. While the pickup and delivery crews generally worked hard and were professional, poor communication, changing contacts, inadequate staffing, and a fundamentally flawed inventory process significantly detracted from the overall experience. Ultimately, the level of service we received was not commensurate with the amount we paid. And with how much we helped, we may as well could have just done everything ourselves.

Very late delivery

Very late delivery. Shipment was over a week beyond the promised delivery window. Customer service was lacking in empathy and quite unhelpful. The actual pickup and delivery was contracted out to a different company which was not what I expected. Finally the company offered me a $30 per day discount for each day the delivery was late. First that was an exceptionally low amount to offer for extreme inconvenience. This was an insult and the way the representative offered, it was like she was doing me a favor. I would have preferred to have my delivery delivered during the specified time frame. I expected more from this company.

Extremely Disappointing Experience with…

Extremely Disappointing Experience with American Van Lines
Our experience with American Van Lines was, unfortunately, one of the worst service experiences we have encountered. What should have been a professionally coordinated interstate move became an ordeal involving poor planning, inadequate resources, unexpected expenses, lost time, and significant inconvenience to our family.
We provided American Van Lines with information regarding the belongings that needed to be moved so they could properly plan the job. Despite this, when the moving crew arrived, they came with a 26-foot truck that was clearly inadequate for the move, along with insufficient materials and resources to properly complete the job.
The first attempt essentially failed. We had taken time away from work and made arrangements around the scheduled move, only to find ourselves dealing with a situation that should have been anticipated and prevented by a professional moving company.
When another crew subsequently attempted to complete the move, they worked extremely late, yet a significant amount of our property was still left behind. We were ultimately faced with having to make additional arrangements and trips ourselves to retrieve belongings that American Van Lines had been contracted to move.
Beyond the poor execution of the move itself, we incurred substantial additional expenses and losses, including:
Approximately $1,000 in additional packing/material-related charges Multiple days away from work. Additional fuel and travel expenses. Wear and tear on our personal vehicles
Additional trips to retrieve belongings that were left behind
Disruption to previously scheduled plans associated with our relocation
Considerable time spent calling, communicating, documenting problems, and attempting to obtain a reasonable resolution
Perhaps most frustrating was the amount of personal effort required simply to get the move completed. When you hire a national moving company, particularly for a significant interstate relocation, you reasonably expect the company to properly evaluate the move, provide adequate equipment and manpower, transport the belongings entrusted to it, and take responsibility when things go seriously wrong.
We documented our concerns and provided American Van Lines with an opportunity to address the situation. After everything we experienced and the expenses we incurred, we were offered only $1,000 in reimbursement. We declined that offer because, in our view, it does not come close to adequately addressing the financial impact, lost time, inconvenience, and disruption caused by this experience.
We have requested $5,000 in reimbursement as what we believe is a much more reasonable resolution considering the totality of what occurred.
I do not write a review like this lightly. Problems can happen in any business, and what often distinguishes a good company is how it responds when something goes wrong. In our case, however, the problems were substantial, repeated, costly, and extraordinarily frustrating.
Based upon our experience, I cannot recommend American Van Lines. Anyone considering using them for a major move should ask detailed questions about who will actually perform the move, truck capacity, staffing, packing requirements, additional charges, what happens if everything does not fit, and how claims and service failures are handled before paying a substantial deposit or committing to the move.
We sincerely hope American Van Lines ultimately chooses to resolve our situation appropriately. Until then, this review reflects our experience and the significant financial and personal impact this move has had on us.

Avoid American Van Lines at all costs

We have moved several times and understand what a professional moving service should provide\. Based on that experience, we had clear expectations for our move with American Van Lines\.

**Expectations:**
We expected proper planning based on the full inventory we provided, an appropriately sized truck, sufficient packing supplies, and clear, responsive communication throughout the process\.

**Issues Encountered:**
Despite weeks of preparation and providing a complete inventory, the movers arrived with a truck that was too small and insufficient supplies\. The entire day was lost due to poor preparation and frustrating, nearly non\-existent communication with supervisors\.

After the initial failure, the move was rescheduled and we were assured the issues had been corrected\. However, the same problem occurred again—the truck was still too small to complete the job\.

Due to continued poor communication and the lack of resolution after two attempts, we were ultimately forced to complete the move ourselves\. This included a 7\-hour drive to rent a U\-Haul at our own expense\.

**Resolution:**
No effective resolution was provided by American Van Lines, and we had to independently finish the move at significant personal cost and inconvenience\.

This experience was extremely disappointing, and we strongly recommend avoiding American Van Lines\.

Deceitful Scammers- Do Not Use

American Van lines damaged my belongings and they are ignoring my calls and emails regarding the damage. The delivery driver shrugged and said sorry. I emailed pictures and still nothing. Do not use this company stay away, they only care about the money you give them, and not about your belongings.
