Japan (Japanese: 日本; Rōmaji: Nihon / Nippon; Ainu: シサㇺモシㇼ, Sisam Mosir; Okinawan: ヤマトゥ, Yamatu) is an island country in Asia on Earth. Japan's first debut in the Super Mario franchise was in Golf: Japan Course; however, only a map of the country is seen on the title screen. Japan's first full appearance was in NES Open Tournament Golf as one of the playable countries; other real world countries, including the United States of America and the United Kingdom, likewise debuted in the Mario universe the same game. Japan's capital, Tokyo, has been featured in several Mario games, including in Mario is Missing! as one of the locations Luigi visits, as the Tokyo Blur race course in Mario Kart Tour and the Booster Course Pass for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, and as the host city in Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 and its arcade port.

Outside of the Mario universe, Japan's city of Kyoto is the headquarters of Nintendo. As such, many Super Mario games are developed here.

The Super Mario Bros. Super Show![edit]

While Japan was never seen in the show, in The Super Mario Bros. Super Show! episode "Mario Meets Koop-zilla" and "Karate Koopa", Sayonara is based on real-world country Japan, which it includes a references to Tokyo, Osaka, and Kyoto.

Super Mario Odyssey[edit]

In Super Mario Odyssey, Bowser's Kingdom is visually based on feudal Japan, with the castle's architecture resembling that of a traditional Japanese castle.

The pun
  • In Super Mario Bros. 3 in Water Land, on the island where the castle is, the island is shaped like Japan. Also, the castle is located right where the Nintendo of Japan Headquarters in Kyoto would be if the island were really Japan.
  • In the Japanese version of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, Question 3 in the 66th Trivia Quiz-Off has the choices "４本" (yon-hon, "4 feet"), "６本" (rop-pon, "6 feet"), "８本" (hachi-hon, "8 feet"), and "日本" (Nihon, "Japan") which sounds like "２本" (ni-hon, "2 feet"). Its English version is "4 feet, 6 feet, 8 feet, Defeat".
