AI & LLM-based agents are *just* starting to become part of scaled production pieces of enterprise architectures. Below is a snapshot of what we at Greyhound Research had to say on the topic. At Greyhound Research, we believe Salesforce is enforcing AppExchange rules more aggressively because the economic conditions that once rewarded openness no longer apply. For years, Salesforce prioritised ecosystem expansion over control. That strategy delivered scale, but it did not fully monetise the ecosystem itself. Today, core CRM growth has matured, while AI has introduced a permanent capital burden across training, inference, security, and governance. In that environment, Salesforce is reasserting control where durable margin can be defended. The ecosystem is the obvious lever. This is not a tactical enforcement cycle. It is a precedent-setting reset that signals platform access is conditional, revocable, and monetisable. Salesforce is behaving less like a neutral system of record and more like a platform owner that expects innovation to occur on its terms and in alignment with its AI roadmap. We also believe the risk for CIOs is not an immediate price shock, but creeping cost invisibility and deepening lock-in. Salesforce-related spend now accumulates across AppExchange commissions, integration design, partner renegotiations, data access restrictions, and AI usage constraints, often surfacing mid-cycle when reversal is hardest. Lock-in here is behavioural rather than technical. Each workflow, integration, and AI pilot quietly raises the cost of change until optionality becomes theoretical. CIOs must respond architecturally. Salesforce should remain a system of engagement, not the sole authority over enterprise intelligence. Data must exist independently in enterprise-controlled environments, with neutral integration layers and deliberate abstraction. Salesforce is not unique in this direction. It is simply moving faster.
