Roses for Valentine's

Love isn’t all perfect red roses. It’s a more complex and messy bouquet than that. So we’ve decided against selling them this February. Instead, our bouquets celebrate our unique relationships. While we don’t have red roses this year, we do have a selection of exciting bouquets for this Valentine's day.

With over 150 varieties, roses are actually one of the most diverse flowers. To help you decide which roses to send this year, here’s an edit of our favourite colours and their secret meanings.

What do roses mean?

Roses carry diverse symbolism based on their colours. While red roses are iconic emblems of love and romance, each color tells its own story. Dive into the meanings of different rose colours with us, shall we?

1. Pink roses

The spectrum of pink roses are varied and versatile. But if we have to pick a favourite…

First, there’s the delicate pale pink La Belle rose, then there’s the bold coral Miss Piggy rose, not to mention the vibrant pink Ace rose. Our list goes on. But whatever shade you choose, pink roses symbolise admiration and grace. Meaning they’re the perfect flower gift for your other half, best friend or mum.

2. White roses

The original symbol of true love. Yep. Before red roses took on that reputation. Nowadays the white rose represents purity and innocence, and is traditionally used at weddings. A popular choice for royal weddings, white roses featured in the weddings of Meghan Markle + Prince Harry and Princess Eugenie + Jack Brooksbank.

3. Yellow roses

From Bella Donna roses to Butterscotch roses, there are nearly 50 types of yellow rose. Through its association with the sun, sending yellow flowers is a great way to express joy, warmth and friendship. It’s sure to brighten their day. They’re the perfect pick-me-up, but you can also go for our birthday flowers or thank-you treat.

4. Lilac roses

If they like something a little different… lilac roses have an air of mysticism and enchantment about them. Our favourite is the oh so beautiful Morning Dew rose, a specialist rose bred in Holland. It’s even a symbol of love at first sight. Making this a secretly romantic rose. Bloom & Wild Florist, Amelia, says “roses are one of our favourite flowers to work with. I love how there’s so much you can say with one – whether it’s a bold declaration or a subtle hidden message – they’re undeniably romantic. They really add that token of thoughtfulness, which every truly great gift needs. And with so many colours, there’s something for every occasion.”

There’s so much you can say with a rose, from bold declarations to subtle loving messages. It’s the perfect flower to give your gift that extra thoughtfulness.

Roses FAQs

  • When do roses bloom?

Roses typically bloom during the spring and summer months, depending on the specific variety and local climate. Some roses may have additional sporadic blooms throughout the year under optimal conditions.

  • How many roses should I send?

The number of roses to send can convey different meanings. A classic dozen (12) roses often symbolise love, while a single rose can express simplicity or deep affection. Consider the occasion and your message when deciding on the appropriate quantity.

  • Can I send roses to a friend?

Absolutely, you can send roses to a friend! Roses aren't exclusively reserved for romantic gestures; they can be a wonderful way to show appreciation, celebrate a friendship, or offer support. Choose cheerful colours like yellow or pink to convey friendship and positivity.

  • Can I send roses to a man?

Certainly, sending roses to a man is a thoughtful gesture. Opt for colours like deep red, orange, or even mixed colours to convey admiration, appreciation, or friendship. Consider his preferences and the nature of your relationship when selecting the bouquet.

  • What is the meaning of a bouquet of roses?

A bouquet of roses holds various meanings depending on the colours. Red symbolises love and passion, yellow represents friendship and joy, pink conveys admiration and gratitude, while white signifies purity and new beginnings. The arrangement's sentiment can also be influenced by the number and context in which they are given.
