And in a twist no recruiter saw coming, the person appointing him appears to have scrolled past the date of birth and then, brace yourself, looked at what the man has actually done: → Economic Secretary to the Treasury → Financial Secretary to the Treasury → PPS to a sitting Chancellor → Seven finance bills → Two spending reviews Twenty years of doing the precise job, handed the precise job. Revolutionary stuff. Somewhere a hiring algorithm just short-circuited trying to work out why he wasn't auto-rejected for being "overqualified." Because let's be honest. Send that same CV into most companies and it never survives first contact: "Bit senior." "Probably wants too much." "Hmm, will he be a culture fit with a team half his age?" "Love the experience, but we're really after someone with more… runway." Runway. For a role where the entire point is knowing where the runway is. So here's where we've landed. The nation trusts a 66-year-old to run its finances, but your business won't trust a 54-year-old to run a project he's delivered eleven times. We've turned "has done this before, successfully, for decades" into a red flag, and "eager, cheap and clueless" into a strategy. Anyway. Congratulations to the Chancellor on the promotion, and to whoever hired him on the astonishing innovation of reading the document in front of them. Plenty of tread left on those tyres. Turns out you just have to look at the tyres. #recruitment

CONTRIBUTOR: In countries globally there is intense political interest in fostering effective university–business collaborations, but there has been scant attention devoted to exactly how an individual scientist's workload (i.e. specified tasks) and incentive structures (i.e. assessment criteria) may act as a key barrier to this. To investigate this an original, empirical dataset is derived from UK job specifications and promotion criteria, which distil universities' varied drivers into requirements upon academics. This work reveals the nature of the severe challenge posed by a heavily time-constrained culture; specifically, tension exists between opportunities presented by working with business and non-optional duties (e.g. administration and teaching). Thus, to justify the time to work with business, such work must inspire curiosity and facilitate future novel science in order to mitigate its conflict with the overriding imperative for academics to publish. It must also provide evidence of real-world changes (i.e. impact), and ideally other reportable outcomes (e.g. official status as a business' advisor), to feed back into the scientist's performance appraisals. Indicatively, amid 20–50 key duties, typical full-time scientists may be able to free up to 0.5 day per week for work with business. Thus specific, pragmatic actions, including short-term and time-efficient steps, are proposed in a “user guide” to help initiate and nurture a long-term collaboration between an early- to mid-career environmental scientist and a practitioner in the insurance sector. These actions are mapped back to a tailored typology of impact and a newly created representative set of appraisal criteria to explain how they may be effective, mutually beneficial and overcome barriers. Throughout, the focus is on environmental science, with illustrative detail provided through the example of natural hazard risk modelling in the insurance sector.

Jigsaw24 are delighted to join the UK Governments Digital Sustainability Alliance (GDSA). The GDSA is an exciting initiative that brings together the UK government, its ICT and digital supply chain, academic establishments and third sector organisations to drive progress on digital sustainability. GDSA was formed at COP 27 with a remit to improve the sustainability of the UK governments digital estate and support wider sustainability strategies, such as the Greening Government commitments, UN Sustainable Development Goals and the UK Net Zero Pathway. The alliance focusses on collaboration between government, industry and academia to identify and review risks and opportunities, problem solve and deliver guidance and recommendations to government on digital sustainability practices. Jigsaw 24 are really excited to be a part of this initiative, and confident that we can add real value to the group. Our work with The Climate Pledge and some of our direct customer sustainability teams is incredibly important to us, promoting best practice, sharing experience and encouraging our wider supply chains to accelerate their own sustainability journey’s. Looking forward to my first summit in February!
