English is my second language. I thought it was just a posh way of saying dead. It's not. Kids didn't make it up because it sounded cute. They made it up because a machine kept deleting the real one. 🤖 Say the wrong word on TikTok and your video disappears. 🚫 So a whole generation learned to talk in code: 🍆 Seggs = sex 🌽 Corn = porn 🧾 Accountant = sex worker 💲🫘 Le dollar bean = lesbian That last one came from someone typing "le$bian" to get past the filter. TikTok's own voice robot read it out loud. 🔊 The platform named it. 😅 Here's what nobody says out loud: Ban a word, and users swap it for a new one. 🔁 Ban that one, they swap again. The bad actors adapt first. The ones who lose are the kid trying to say how they feel, and the person trying to help them. The words are gone. The harm isn't. It just got a cuter name. 🎀

Tom Newton posted thisOver the past few weeks I have been thinking about how much AI is being embedded into products and services. How much of this is a waste of time? I got an AI driven response to a support query (I wont name and shame), and it was practically useless. Why? Because I had already googled my problem, and so I had, defacto, stuffed it into the waiting maw of gemini, who, it turned out, had access to all this company's help documents, so provided exactly the same (unhelpful) answer. Obviously "The AI knows about my account and activity" _might_ add a bit more utility here... but where are we pushing AI into workflows where even the average user is going to have burned down some rainforest on the same task, with the same result, already? Be interested to hear examples from both the "this worked" and "this didn't" camp!

These disgusting dolls should not exist, and anyone found breaching this new ban will face up to 5 years behind bars. This comes on top of the Government’s record £100 million to combat child sexual abuse, improve the police response, target offenders, and support victims. Congratulations to Munira and everyone who has campaigned on this issue.

We asked why image-based abuse, which is harming women and children today, is not met with the same urgency. SWGfL co-hosted "Safeguarding the AI Generation: Confronting Image-Based Abuse" with Microsoft and the Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO UK), opened by Jenny Lay-Flurrie and Baroness Harriet Harman. The Revenge Porn Helpline managed around 1,600 cases in 2019 and nearly 25,000 last year. This August alone, it handled more than in all of 2021. StopNCII.org can stop intimate images being shared, and 23 platforms use it. There should be thousands. From next week, Ofcom will require hash matching to prevent NCII in the UK. Charlotte Aynsley moderated the first panel. Nighat Dad showed why context and trust matter. Kalliopi Mingeiroui explained why online and offline violence must be tackled together. Nicole Karlebach set out how to keep victims at the centre. Mike Jackson moderated the second panel, on children. Sheema SenGupta argued that safety must be the default. Alamelu Subramaniam showed that platform features matter as well as content. @Minister Chaichanok Chidchob called for AI content to be identified by design. Dessislava Savova reminded us that a global problem needs global standards. Cailin Crockett closed with the call to action. Survivors deserve the same urgency the world gives to the existential risks of AI. Over the next six months, the Model National Framework consultation will build out that response. Tom Newton liked thisTom Newton liked thisDevastated to receive the news yesterday that John J., CEO of LGfL has passed away 😢 Those who knew John, will know that he was a larger than life character, famous for his “loud” shirts, but beyond all the fun and games, the work he did with LGfL truly helped to pave the pathway for schools in the UK to build strong digital foundations and raise the bar for others to achieve the same. The resultant effect is a lot of why schools are able to enjoy the digital learning opportunities available today. John was a kind, honest man, but for me, personally, and above anything, a friend, confidant and someone who supported me many, many times over the years. Something for which I will be forever grateful. My fun fact and lasting memory of John... I never would have started the whole #SelfieWithAbid thing if John hadn't pushed me to do it at Bett 2018. I was never confident at all about taking photos and well, he pushed me out of my comfort zone, told me to take one, post it on socials, and well, the rest is history! #SelfieKingsForever ❤️ John’s passing is a huge loss for the wider EdTech community. Thank you John, for the long lasting impact you had on not only EdTech, but education as a whole. I will miss him dearly 😢

Right to work (in the UK meaning, not the Alabama meaning) has been law in the US since Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986. I had an argument with Anil John about this being US DHS identification years ago. He refused to acknowledge that even tho the DHS validated (nearly?) all I9 requests that are submitted to E-Verify where they electronically submit employment authorization data, but not the full I-9 form. E-Verify is voluntary for many employers, though mandatory in certain states or federal contracts. I don't have numbers on the specific quantity submitted. U.S. Form I‑9 (Employment Eligibility Verification) Origin: Created by the Immigration Reform and Control Act (IRCA) of 1986. Effective Date: November 6, 1986—every employee hired after that date must have an I‑9 completed2. Purpose: To verify both identity and legal authorization to work in the U.S. Process: Employee completes Section 1 on or before their first day. Employer reviews documents (passport, green card, SSN card + ID, etc.) and completes Section 2 within 3 business days. Employers must retain the form and present it if audited. Scope: Applies to all employees (citizens and non‑citizens). Enforcement: Civil and criminal penalties for employers who fail to comply.
