We expanded into 14 international markets, including: 🇩🇰 Denmark 🇳🇱 Netherlands 🇫🇷 France 🇪🇸 Spain 🇩🇪 Germany 🇬🇧 UK 🇺🇸 US 🇨🇦 Canada 🇯🇵 Japan 🇳🇴 Norway And apparently four other markets that our management team was too busy counting the £35BN to remember. 😂 There were board meetings. There were arguments about market expansion. There were moments when we had cash but somehow still couldn’t enter Norway because we need a local on our cap table. Times where our competitors stole our advisors and markets (thanks Andrea Solis Olivares ) We did the whole thing in one day, in a business simulation. 😂 What a fantastic experience building and exiting a company alongside Raymond J. Hegarty, Tim Ellis, Vishal Shah and Bahareh Khezr For a few glorious hours, the five of us were the founders of a $1.7BN ARR global technology company. And naturally, once you’ve sold to Anthropic for £35BN, there is only one appropriate way to celebrate: A superyacht, champagne with David. Thank you Scott Newton and Christian Rangen for the invitation once again. Turns out entrepreneurship is considerably easier when you can compress 7 years into one day. Now back to building companies like Execution Capital

I'm currently demoing our Portfolio Success Platform to VCs and syndicates to sharpen our product strategy. The quality of the feedback has been remarkable. And a pattern is clear. Portfolio support competes with everything else a GP does: LP relations. Networking. Sourcing. DD. Compliance. Admin. And a bit of social media 🤣 So it slides down the list. Here's the irony. GPs sit on an incredible network their companies rarely get to use: investors, operators, advisors, even clients. The asset is there. The function to deploy it isn't. So the real question isn't "should we do portfolio support?" It's: → How do you build it with existing resources? → How do you use it to make better investment decisions? → How do you back more companies early, then put your follow-on capital behind only the very best? That's what we're building at Execution Capital. To every GP and syndicate lead who gave me an hour and an honest opinion: merci. Seriously.

The other gets a look. I'm a dad x2. It's the luckiest job I've ever had. And I know exactly who does the heavy lifting. I lost my mum in an accident when I was 15. I never got to thank her properly. So this one is for her, and for every mum out there. As the saying goes: 50% of the world has a uterus. The other 50% came from one. Now picture the mums building companies. Pitch at 9. School run at 3. Investor update at 11pm. Then the "lazy mum" look at the weekend. They deserve more credit. And more cheques. This cartoon was inspired by David Fogel at Alma Angels who backs women founders every day. Merci, David. And merci, Maman and my wife Axelle R. Zady Tag a mum who's building something. She's earned it.

Kevin MONSERRAT a distribuit aceastaAt 14 I had a uniform, no plan, and no idea where I was going. That's me in the photo. One of the youngest firemen in France. My first job. It paid nothing. What I had instead was a direction. Not a destination. Just: forward. Forward meant paying for my own education, because nobody would do it for me. Forward meant leaving—three continents, alone. Forward meant arriving in the US at 20 without a word of English and getting by with hand gestures. I've never been so good at Pictionary, or so bad at ordering lunch. Forward meant finishing an MSc in Economics and Entrepreneurship with distinction, in a language I'd learnt from scratch. Forward also meant Ztudium, my first startup. I put every penny I'd saved into it and lost every penny. Direction doesn't protect you from that. It just tells you which way to get up. The rest is history, as they say. Mostly boring history: getting up, again, in the same direction. People ask where I'm from. It's the wrong question. Where you start is given to you. Where you go is the one thing that's yours. That kid had no money, no English, no plan. He had a direction. That turned out to be enough. Where are you heading?

Kevin MONSERRAT a distribuit aceastaMost of the largest US VCs run a platform. Better deals come to them. Learning compounds across the portfolio. Problems surface earlier. Problems get solved in real time. We went through the fifteen largest VC firms by AUM. Eleven run a platform function: talent, GTM, marketing, community. Executive recruiting is the single most common service. a16z runs around 600 people and only about a tenth of them invest. But look at what every one of those eleven platforms is underneath. A cost centre, funded from fat management fees. It scales with the size of the fund, not with what the portfolio actually needs.

Kevin MONSERRAT a distribuit aceastaWatch him. He isn't pedalling harder than anyone else. He's barely pedalling at all. Same hill. Same gravity. Everyone else is spinning their legs and fighting the wind. He tucks in, cuts the drag, and flies past them. That's the difference between working hard and working smart, and it's how portfolio support works too. Working hard looks like: - Weekly calls with every founder - Board decks read at 11pm - Intros pulled from memory - Finding out a company has stalled when it asks for a bridge That's pedalling into the wind: a lot of effort, and a lot of it lost to drag. Working smart looks like: - One live view of where each company is stuck - Support that goes where the data points, not to whoever shouts loudest - Spotting the stall two quarters before the bridge request That's the tuck. You get more speed from the same energy. When managers get their position right, the portfolio feels it: Marks move for reasons you can explain. - Follow-on calls rest on evidence, not founder charisma. - LP updates show what you did, not just what you own. - The quiet middle of the portfolio starts to move. - Partners win back time for sourcing and the next raise. The market gives you the hill, and every fund rides the same gravity. What sets funds apart is how much drag they carry on the way down. So here's the question: Where is your fund still pedalling when it should be tucked in?

The following white paper challenges the status quo of venture building and draws upon my 25+ years in technology, having been, yet still active as a Founder, Investor, Executive and Board Advisor globally. I do hope it creates, both a healthy debate and curiosity, even perhaps some degree of contrevercy :) I humbly caveat all content and meaning as not intended as personal in any way to my network here, or those in the wider venture building ecosystem. What I will say however, it is time to call it out, and many need to get out of denial. It is time for more transparent, empathetic, and a human-centric approach to venture building, yet also a more proportionately fair share in the rewards that success brings, not forgetting the risks involved........ That was reinforced for me yesterday at the Scale Up Europe Discovery Session, where our team had to take a company from product selection through market entry, financing and growth to an eventual €35bn simulated exit. What stood out was how interconnected every decision became: Product → market → cash flow → capital → investors → value creation → exit. Get one wrong and you can change everything downstream. This also reflects the approach I take with growth companies through BrightNorth Venture Ltd. Before thinking about investors, I look at the commercial proposition, financial requirements, capital strategy and investor readiness. The question is not simply “Who will invest?” but “What capital does this business need, from whom, and what will it enable the company to achieve?” Another big takeaway was the importance of the right team mix. A strong product and ambitious CEO are not enough. Financial management, cash flow discipline, commercial capability, market understanding and the willingness to challenge each other all influence the outcome. 💡 And perhaps my favourite lesson: exit strategy doesn’t start at exit. The investors you choose, markets you enter, partnerships you build and capital decisions you make today can shape the exit opportunities available years later. Capital raising, value creation and exit strategy are one continuum. Leaving one company to build another doesn't mean you are leaving the people. Trust and relationships are formed beyond institutional boundaries. Yesterday, we hosted a Cloudberry Ventures and friends dinner which was attended by former colleagues Mahesh Krishnaswamy & Ellie Joo at X, The Moonshot Factory who have done an incredible job back then spinning out Taara as an independent company. They continue to spread fibre like internet speed with just beams of light (no cables!) while operating within the boundaries of a growth stage startup. Our team plus our venture partners Kate Prebble, Akash W. from Wispville & Friedrich A. Neuman (also venture partner Norrsken VC & GGF) really appreciated Mahesh's insight on what it takes to preserve against all odds and build what others deem as impossible. We couldn't have a friends dinner without having Michael Brennan from Allocator One and Simon Levy from Benevolent in attendance.

This could potentially be a real game changer from the Financial Conduct Authority, or maybe not, as always the devil is gong to be in the detail. However if it offers what is being reported, it could bring to an end the over inflated prices being sought for authorised "shells", with their premiums disappearing. Businesses interested in becoming an authorised firm will now have no need to try to shorten the application process (by acquiring an existing entity and going through Change in Control). The businesses that are up for sale will then be valued at their actual worth, which could make things very interesting. Look forward to further updates on this initiative.
