Today’s figures showing an 11% increase in drug-related deaths in Scotland are a stark reminder that behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a community experiencing profound loss. While important progress has been made through investment in treatment, harm reduction and public health approaches, these latest numbers highlight the need for greater urgency and stronger collaboration across health, social care, housing, mental health and justice services. Reducing drug-related harm cannot be achieved by any one organisation alone. It requires a coordinated, compassionate response that removes barriers to support and challenges the devastating impact of stigma. “I was adamant that I just wanted to go home.” Residential rehab isn't always where people expect to find hope. But for many, it's where recovery begins. Residential rehab is one of the longest-established and most well-evidenced forms of drug and alcohol treatment. Yet access in England remains far lower than it should be - with just 1% of people in drug and alcohol treatment accessing state-funded residential rehab each year, compared with a European average of 11%. Despite the evidence, too many people who could benefit are still missing out. Open Houses is an opportunity to come inside residential services, ask questions and hear directly from people who have experienced treatment for themselves. 🏠 Come and see for yourself. New evaluation findings from Public Health Scotland provide clear evidence that investment in residential rehabilitation has expanded access across Scotland, with publicly funded placements more than doubling since the programme began and national targets being achieved. For those of us working in the sector, this matters. The report demonstrates that when residential rehabilitation is prioritised and funded, more people can access intensive treatment and recovery support. It also highlights the importance of a whole-system approach, where rehabilitation is connected to mental health services, housing, employment support and long-term aftercare. Phoenix Futures Scotland are proud to have contributed to this progress in through the delivery of residential rehabilitation, while continuing to advocate for sustainable investment and equitable access for everyone who could benefit.
