As partners of Macmillan Cancer Support, we’re proud to be supporting this year’s Macmillan Coffee Morning 💚 Last year during a routine medical examination, Emma’s doctor felt an abdominal mass. This finding led to her being diagnosed with Paraganglioma, which is a rare type of neuroendocrine tumour (NET) that starts in nerve cells. "Whilst the lump was found in early March 2025, it took two months to get a diagnosis because my cancer is rare, and a month after that I was told it was metastatic. It took a while to get a treatment plan, but I underwent successful surgery in September to remove the primary tumour. Six weeks after surgery, I was back volunteering at parkrun, four weeks later I was tail walking and 12 weeks after surgery I gently jogged round. I am now 12 months post-surgery, and I am back to the same level of fitness I had before treatment. "When I was given my cancer diagnosis, the Macmillan Coordinator, Amelia, was in the room with the Consultant. I will never forget her kindness. She scooped us up afterwards, gave me a folder of information and checked up on me later in the week. I also signed up to Macmillan newsletters which help support you through a diagnosis and I regularly accessed the website when I had questions about how to tell people about your diagnosis, financial concerns or returning to work. "parkrun has played a massive part in managing my physical and mental health during diagnosis, treatment and recovery. It gave me an important anchor while my world was imploding. Turning up every Saturday gave me a sense of agency. I love the ethos and spirit of parkrun, and the sense of community. "A massive thank you to parkrun and Macmillan for all your support during the past year! I doubt either organisation realises just how much they have helped me. I am lucky that my cancer is slow growing, and whilst it has spread to my bones, my latest scan is stable, so I expect to keep parkrunning for many more years."
