Great prices and selection are nice. But when something goes wrong, customer service is what really counts. And unfortunately, Mantel has been a massive disappointment.

Mantel has a great selection of products, competitive prices and, until recently, I had nothing but good things to say about them. Unfortunately, my last two experiences have completely changed my opinion.

First, I ordered a set of tyres advertised with a 2-day delivery time. They eventually took over THREE WEEKS to arrive. When I contacted customer service, the response was essentially that it wasn't their fault because the tyres had left their warehouse on time. Apparently, what happens after that is none of their concern. If I needed tyres urgently, I was advised to simply order another set.

No apology, no goodwill gesture, no real attempt to help. Just a shrug.

Secondly, my Hammerhead Karoo developed a problem after just 20 months. I returned it to Mantel on the 13th, and they received it on the 15th. Since then, communication has been practically nonexistent. I eventually had to call them myself to find out what was happening, only to discover that the unit had been sent to Hammerhead for repair.

And then... silence.

I know retailers aren't obliged to offer compensation for every inconvenience, but customer service is about more than fulfilling the absolute minimum of legal obligations. A little communication, ownership and goodwill would make a world of difference.

After these two experiences, I've simply lost confidence in Mantel.
