My experience with the digital bank has been great because the app is easy to use, convenient, and reliable. I especially appreciate how quickly I can check my balance, transfer money, and manage my finances without having to visit a physical branch. The user interface is simple and straightforward, and transactions are generally processed smoothly. Overall, the company is doing a good job of making banking more accessible and convenient through technology.

They are not in the business of banking, they are in the business of float exploitation ; great business model (ripping people off)...

With reference to the review title, please see the bottom of this review for why this is a great business model. Additionally their original email is pasted at the bottom unaltered except certain parts in all-caps to highlight how that can impact your business and their business model.

Last week I started the process of transitioning all of my LLCs checking accounts from brick-and-mortar to Mercury. I had two incoming wires that I needed to move back to my legacy account to maintain adequate liquidity for ongoing business activities while the dust settled in coordinating vendors, payments, etc.
Both incoming wires and outgoing ACH transfers were appropriately noted.
I was baffled to receive an email the same day as the second outgoing transfer notifying me that my account was being closed for violation of the terms of service (without specifying which term in particular was violated). I really thought it was a joke. Towards the end of their email, they offered "Our decision will remain final unless new information emerges.", so I wasted an hour providing what I thought was a detailed and compelling explanation for why their decision was rash.
This morning I received this perfunctory form email...
"Hello,
Thank you for your message. We review each account thoroughly and take a holistic view of your account and business information. Closure decisions are based on a variety of internal factors.
I know this may be frustrating, but we are unable to provide more detailed information regarding the reason your account was closed and we aren't able to reconsider.
As mentioned in our previous communication, any remaining funds in your account should be returned to you within approximately 60 calendar days. Please be aware that this will be our final communication on this matter. Your understanding is appreciated.
Thank you,
Hailey"
I really should have checked TrustPilot first, but if you are reading this, I'd highly suggest that you reconsider opening an account at Mercury

Original Mercury email (caps to highlight key aspects to note):
Hi,
We’re writing to inform you that we can no longer offer you services at Mercury.
We've identified your account for closure due to a violation of our Terms of Service and/or your Deposit Account Agreement. Because of this, funds remaining in your account as of today will be held FOR AT LEAST 60 calendar days*. Please note that scheduled, previously initiated, and expected INCOMING*2 funds may still process (wires, card transactions, check deposits, and ACH credits) and will be subject to the same hold period.
SHOULD FUNDS BE RETURNED*3, they will be DISBURSED VIA CHECK*4 to the shipping address on file. If the address on file is international, the check will be sent to the legal address on file. Please note we can only disburse any remaining funds via check, and unfortunately this is not something we are able to budge on.
Our decision will remain final unless new information emerges. If circumstances do not change, this will be our final communication to you regarding this matter.
Let us know if you have any questions or concerns.
Thanks,
Mercury Compliance Team"
*- obviously "at least 60 calendar days" is not the same as about 60 days...so expect it to be as long as they want.
*2 - they have no issue accepting and holding even more incoming, which I'm going to tie into their business model below
*3 - "Should funds be returned" should be a huge red flag to anyone considering this company. The language is vague enough to suggest that excess funds may not be returned. SCARY!
*4 - "Should funds be returned, they will be disbursed by check...". Okay, now you have to appreciate that Mercury purports to be an online (quasi-)bank and key to that is being able to transact, transfer funds, pay vendors, etc. digitally. And yet for final disbursement of funds -- that apparently you may not get back -- they have to cut a check and post it. Laughable at best, but in actuality pretty pathetic.
From Google Gemini:
- Mercury serves 300k active customer accounts and has ~50% YoY customer growth, with a current average of 8 to 10k new accounts per month
- "...routine monthly involuntary account closures typically represent a small percentage (often under 1–2%) of total active accounts, driven primarily by automated fraud prevention models and routine compliance audits."
- Est Avg Bal: Approx $65k to $100k/ account. Context: Mercury manages ~$20 billion in total across 300,000+ accounts. Median balance estimated in the $15k to $30k range

Mercury business model (with conservative #s):
1) Allow account funding, median ~$15k+
2) Close approx 1%+ (=3k)/mo
3) Hold AT LEAST 60 days, which means 6k+ accounts/mo
4) Collect interest on float of 6k x 15k x fed rate (3.63%) = minimum $275k/m in free money for them

Mobile app is fast and good quality. I think for me they could improve a little bit some common actions locations. But i won't make it a 4 star just for that, since it's a bank and the main purpose is being a good bank.

MERCURY HAS HELD MY MONEY FOR MORE THAN 60 DAYS — WHERE IS MY CHECK?

Mercury closed my account and told me that my remaining balance would be returned to me by check in approximately 60 days.

It has now been more than 60 days, and I STILL HAVE NOT RECEIVED MY CHECK OR MY MONEY.

I have contacted Mercury support repeatedly asking one very simple question: Where is my check and when will my money be returned?

Instead of answering that question, I keep receiving essentially the same response:

“Hi Sherrie,

An action taken on your account violated our Terms of Use and/or your Deposit Account Agreement. Our records show we have sent private communications from our team regarding this. For our full Terms of Use, please visit Mercury’s legal/terms page.”

This does not answer my complaint.

I am no longer asking Mercury why my account was closed. I am asking WHERE IS MY MONEY?

Mercury already told me that my remaining funds would be sent by check in approximately 60 days. That time has passed. Yet whenever I ask about the check, I receive the same response about their Terms of Use instead of an actual update about my money.

I have previously posted about this issue on Trustpilot, and Mercury responded with another generic response rather than resolving the problem.

I am posting this again because the issue remains unresolved.

And to anyone reading this review: watch Mercury’s response below. I would not be surprised if they post another version of the same generic response telling me to contact support or referring me to their Terms of Use. I have already contacted support repeatedly. That is the entire problem.

Mercury, please do not respond to this review with another copy-and-paste explanation about why my account was closed.

Answer these questions instead:

• Has my check been issued?
• If yes, what date was it issued and mailed?
• What address was it mailed to?
• Is there a check number or tracking information?
• If it has NOT been issued, why has it not been issued after more than 60 days?
• When will I actually receive my money?

I am not asking for another automated response.

MERCURY, I NEED MY MONEY BACK. RETURN MY FUNDS.

Account closed 90 minutes after funding, $1,500 held with no explanation

I opened a business account for my US LLC and funded it with a single $1,500 wire from my own personal account, in my own name, marked "owner capital contribution." It was the first and only transaction on the account.

About 90 minutes after confirming they received the money, Mercury closed the account and placed an indefinite hold on the funds. No specific reason was ever given — only identical form letters saying they "cannot share details." No human review, no chance to respond. The money has now been frozen for months with no timeline.

Moving my own money from my own personal account into my own company account is not a violation of anything. I understand closing an account you no longer want to service — but holding legitimate funds indefinitely, with no explanation and no process to get them back, is not acceptable.

This is now filed with the CFPB (Complaint ID 260627-34733854) and the OCC (regarding Column N.A., the custodian bank). I would still prefer a simple resolution: return my $1,500 electronically to an account I can access.

I'm Loving Mercury So Far - Set-Up Was Easy, Minor Improvements Will Make It Perfect

Signing up for Mercury was easy and the out the box version has a lot of useful functionality for a small, start-up business. With a few minor functionality and interface improvements, it would be perfect. They do seem responsive to customers and platform updates prioritize meeting their practical needs, not arbitrarily competing with other tech companies.

I honestly wouldn't work with them anymore. I was one of the founding customers of Mercury. For a long time they were an amazing bank. They had customer support that would move heaven and earth to accommodate for problems, both financially and in business.

Their support is just so bad these days. They don't care about you and they show it. It's a shame.
