A disastrous salon visit from start to finish
I’m writing this because I was there for this appointment from start to finish, and I still can’t quite believe how bad it was handled. I actually made this account just to share what happened.
My wife and I were visiting Copenhagen. She booked here to do something very simple, to make her (asian) hair a bit darker again after summer. Her hair was in good condition. We didn’t come in for a transformation or asking for anything complicated. The ask was basically to make dark hair, a touch darker.
At first, I was sitting by the window on the other side of the salon, working on my phone. I only got up because I suddenly heard the hairdresser raise her voice and speak in a condescending tone at my wife. This was within the first few minutes of what the salon now calls a “consultation”. Nothing like this has ever happened to us with any salon or service professional.
Instead of a calm conversation, it turned into my wife being talked over and corrected on the history of her own hair. Having lived with my wife for many years (needless to say) I know she keeps her hair close to her natural color. So it was jarring to hear a hairdresser repeatedly insist that her dark hair had been bleached, even though she has never bleached it. Every time she tried to explain what had been done before, the hairdresser cut her off and told her she “didn’t know what she was talking about”. When my wife tried to clarify, she was repeatedly shut down, with the hairdresser insisting she was right “because she does this for a living”.
The tone overall felt aggressive, confrontational, defensive, and dismissive all at once. There were no curiosity, no listening, no “let me understand what you want”. Just a long lecture about how my wife was wrong about her own hair.
I could see the change in my wife’s face. At first she was relaxed and excited, then she went quiet and uncomfortable. This is someone who is usually very calm and polite. To see her treated like that so quickly felt awful.
Looking back, that was the moment we should have walked out.
The salon’s response later described this as a “thorough consultation.” From where I was sitting, it did not feel thorough. It felt like a one-sided monologue. There was no attempt to meet her halfway and no effort to build trust. Just 20 minutes of being told she was wrong. Imagine yourselves, coming to this salon to be treated this way. It really ruined our day.
Unfortunately, the problems didn’t end with the attitude.
After the appointment, her hair began to behave in ways we had never seen before. For days, hair dye residue kept coming out, staining towels, bedding, and even furniture. Her hair which had been in good condition before, started to lose its shape and became rough, frizzy, and dry. Over the following weeks, we kept finding hair all over the apartment in a way that had never happened before this visit. On top of what we paid for the appointment, we then had to spend more money on products just to try to repair the damage.
I was surprised by the salon’s public response to my wife’s review, as I watched how my wife was spoken to and how she walked out feeling belittled, sad, and worried about her hair.
If you are reading this and trying to decide whether to book an appointment here, all I can do is share our experience as honestly as possible. Our request was incredibly simple, and our expectations even simpler. You expect to be listened to, treated with respect, and to leave with healthy hair.
Instead, we walked away with damaged hair, extra costs, and a very uncomfortable memory of how my wife was treated the entire time she was in that chair. I wish someone had written a review like this before we booked.
The salon had every chance to listen and take responsibility. But they chose not to. Sometimes an apology is the bare minimum, and even that seems too much to ask.
