I'm a software engineer and father who loves #nature and being #outdoors. I post mainly about #programming #tech and #opensource and try to be funny on occasion.
I work for Electronic Arts and don't represent them with anything I say here.

I wish I knew what my partner meant when she says "this tastes like cabinet" or "this tastes like fridge". I truly do not understand.
Taking down government websites due to the shutdown is just petty shithousery. There's no reason why a website would stop working just because idiots in DC play these dumb games.
Due to working on services that do quite a bit of dynamic protobuf marshalling and unmarshalling, this seems like an exciting project https://mcyoung.xyz/2025/07/16/hyperpb/
I get the skepticism for AI, but not the blind hatred or unsupported pessimism. I have to say that I've found it genuinely helpful in the right circumstances. Yes, it's over-hyped, overloaded and overused in a lot of ways. I really think as a technology professional, it's my job to see through the bullshit, figure out the correct application, and, most importantly, relay that information without all the FUD. Just because it's trendy doesn't mean it's bad. If it does one thing well out of a hundred and that one thing is super helpful and saves you time, why not incorporate it into your toolbox? I'm sure my grandfather had specialty tools for his plumbing business that were either useless to the general public because you needed the expertise to use them, or were overkill for the average DIY, but for him it made sense if it added value to his customers and he could wield it in the proper way.
A colleague of mine wrote a good article about his experience learning Go's interfaces, coming from his previous perspective with C#/C++
Worth a read :)
My car has a dead battery. I have a trickle charger, but it is parked in an overflow lot at my complex, away from any outlets. It took me entirely too long (days) to remember that I can just take the stupid battery out of the car over to my garage to charge it. 🤦
For our week-long hackathon at work, we were tasked with exploring AI and automation. Had we not been tasked with this, I probably wouldn't have explored on my own. Certainly learned a lot about MCP, models, agents, prompts, etc. and can definitely see the value AI can provide. I've also learned about current limitations, costs, and security concerns.
There's a lot of hype and feelings around AI. Learning more and using it practically has definitely helped me navigate my own feelings about it. I recommend, if you can, setting up ollama locally and exploring
Pretty sure my aging pup, 16yo Chihuahua/mini Pinscher, is sundowning every evening. Fed, let out, not thirsty, given plenty of attention, yet he whines and stares as if I have the answers. I feel bad but have no idea what he needs. Just a lot of "What do we want? I don't know! When do we want it? Now!" energy. He can't really go on any kind of walk anymore, so aside from just going on the lawn and back we do our daily slow, wandering laps around the house til he gets bored for exercise while I read.
No real point here. Just posting as we slowly trot the house.
Hotel booked for #gophercon in August. Looking forward to meeting new faces and learning
Sorry for all the follow spam recently. I wish your account followed you around like with #atproto. It would be much nicer to not have to rebuild a social graph on every little instance.
It is cool that you can just do your own thing, though.
