IEEE SA has a long-standing role in driving the incubation, development, and application of the standards that enable the global energy infrastructure, from legacy systems to the latest technologies and advancements. The Energy Practice is a focal point for collaboration across the wide range of IEEE volunteer experts engaged in IEEE standards and related initiatives associated with energy topics, and provides linkage to the IEEE Societies, programs and conferences of interest to the energy community.
IEEE SA’s work in the global energy sector centers on smart energy, adapting to increased electrification solutions, integration of new distributed energy resources (DERs), resilient grid infrastructure, and policy. From electric vehicles and the infrastructure needed to support them, to safe operations and procedures for utility workers, we support the development of solutions and technology standards that address the rapidly evolving energy landscape.
As part of the Energy focus, we engage in three key workstreams that address common challenges and offer collaborative opportunities.
Energy generation, transmission, and distribution technologies continuously evolve, with accelerated urgency driven by grid modernization in support of reliable and resilient energy solutions. Areas of focus include renewable and distributed energy resources, smart grid, energy storage, and microgrids.
The electrification solutions side of the equation is a key factor in the next-generation grid. Transportation electrification, growing penetration of electric vehicles and their infrastructure, efficiency initiatives for large industrial consumers of energy, and related global policy goals are addressed.
