This annual, month-long hackathon is when our team puts aside our regular work to explore new ways to do more for the public good. Familiar products like go.gov.sg and redeem.gov.sg originated from our earliest hackathons. Last year’s hackathon brought us projects like Scribe(https://lnkd.in/gRMEVtJZ) which has already saved social workers hundreds of hours by automating client note-taking. Today, the vast majority of our projects come out of this yearly exercise. In the lead-up to this year’s hackathon, the team went on over a dozen learning journeys across the public service. We visited social workers, fire stations, animal care facilities, and many more to understand the range of problems facing the public sector. From these visits, we compiled over 100 problem statements. Over the next month, we’ll be researching, prototyping, and testing solutions in preparation for the 10th of Feb, when we’ll showcase the solutions we’ve come up with to the public service. But this hackathon isn’t just about the products we create. It’s also about fostering a culture where every officer feels empowered to solve problems. It’s an exercise in constructively expressing frustration—turning the things we usually complain about into “I can fix this”. This year, for the first time, we’re also welcoming friends from neighbouring countries to join us. It’s an exciting step toward sharing knowledge and building the future of our countries together. Every year, we think we’ve exhausted all the problems across the public sector. And yet, every year, we uncover new opportunities to do something good. These are ideas that build on previous successes to solve problems we previously thought impossible, ideas more than any visionary person could ever come up with, ideas that could only come from hundreds of the best people working together to solve on the most important problems. The company has benefited directly from the AI coding boom, as vibe coding platforms like Cursor and Lovable need databases to support the apps their users build, driving Supabase’s annualized revenue from $20 million to roughly $70 million between mid-2024 and mid-2025. In my current project (Rize.hk), the vision is massive: a fully regulated crypto-to-fiat lending ecosystem. The temptation? Build a spaceship. The engineers wanted microservices for everything. The stakeholders wanted complex referral trees and advanced staking tiers on Day 1. If we had said "yes" to all of that, we would still be in development today. Instead, I stripped the scope down to the absolute essentials. We had a hard 6-month deadline to get a regulated platform live. I had to be the "Chief Officer of No": ❌ No to fancy UI animations. ❌ No to secondary token pairs (initially). ❌ No to complex social features. We focused ruthlessly on the engine: ✅ Bank-grade Security (AES-256). ✅ Automated KYC/AML (which later boosted conversion by 37%). ✅ The core lending logic. The result? We launched the MVP in 6 months. While competitors were still polishing their "perfect" features in staging, we were processing live transactions. We were gathering real user data. We were generating revenue. The lesson: You cannot learn from a product that no one uses. In Fintech, speed isn't just a metric - it's survival.
