Founders can build a strong product and still miss where the market has moved. Liviu Gherghescu, Head of Architecture at BCR and Technology Advisor on our Investment Board, spoke to exactly this at the Startup Playbook launch: closing the gap between what you built and what the market actually needs is a skill worth developing on purpose. 🧭 Guiding founders through that gap is the role we've taken on at BCR Seed Starter, and the Startup Playbook is the clearest expression of how we approach it. Grow somethingthat will last. BCR Seed Starter - seed investment & support for startups during the Go-To-Market phase.
Despre noi
Seed Starter is a seed support program from BCR. We are looking for "long-game" startups - business plans that have the potential to last for 200 years, thanks to their vision and value for customers. Just like the Erste Group. Our philosophy? Weʼre a different kind of a seed fund. We want to help companies that are built for sustainable and lasting growth. If you have a brilliant idea, a strong team and a clear plan, weʼre here to help and inspire you. How do we work with startups? It all starts by filling in an application for the Seed Starter program. Selected projects are then invited to an intensive two-day bootcamp, during which we will thoroughly test each venture to see if it has what it takes to go the distance. If you successfully pass the investment selection process, we will hand you over to the care of experienced mentors and you will receive all the support needed during the seed phase.

Traction gets us to open the deck. It rarely gets us to a yes. 🫡 What keeps us reading is whether a founder can name the gap in their own market read, defend a number they didn't prepare for, and show us why now is the moment for this problem. That's the part most decks skip and most founders underrate. Chapter 2 of the Startup Playbook, Investor Evaluation Criteria, is our attempt to make that evaluation less of a mystery. Every fund says it looks for strong teams and scalable tech. Here's what actually moves the needle for us. Adrian Rosoaga, CFA, our CIO, breaks down the combination that gets a startup to yes: a team that understands the problem at a deep level, technology built to scale past Romania, traction that's already proving itself, and a strategic fit with BCR. That last point is what sets us apart. We're not just capital. We're a fund with direct access to a bank actively looking for the technology being built in this ecosystem, which means the right fit here can turn into your first major enterprise client. If that's where your startup is headed, let's talk.

💼 Handing off sales too early is one of the more common ways founders lose touch with their own product. No hire can carry the conviction and context a founder has in those first sales conversations, and that's usually where the sharpest product feedback comes from. Bringing in a sales hire before that feedback loop has done its work trades learning for convenience, at a stage where the learning still matters more. Chapter 5 of the Startup Playbook, Sales, makes the case for founder-led sales early on, and for knowing when it's actually time to step back from it. Link in the comments.

🏁 Closing a round gets treated as the finish line, when it's really the start of a new set of obligations. A close confirms that investors found the story compelling enough to back. It says nothing about whether the business holds up under the scrutiny that follows, or whether the amount raised actually matches what the next stage demands. Founders who treat the round as validation, rather than fuel for a specific milestone, often lose sight of what the capital was meant to prove. Chapter 3 of our Startup Playbook, Fundraising, looks at how to raise with that next milestone in mind, not the round itself. Link in the comments.

🧩 Team is the piece founders underestimate until it's the only thing standing between a good plan and a real business. At the Startup Playbook launch, Liviu Munteanu, Partner at Founders Bridge and one of the early backers of FieldOS before BCR Seed Starter Romania came in, put it into words worth keeping. Markets shift. Business plans get rewritten. Geographies expand. The team executing on the ground is what has to hold, every time. It's one of the ideas anchoring our Startup Playbook, straight from someone who bets on teams before anyone else does. Get the full Playbook and start building yours right.

Startup advice travels well until it reaches a market it wasn't written for. 🇷🇴 Capital moves differently in Romania than the playbooks assume, regulatory approvals run on their own calendar, and talent shifts between corporates and startups in patterns that don't map onto Silicon Valley or even Western Europe. Founders who understand these dynamics early build around them, turning what looks like friction into a working knowledge of the terrain everyone else is still guessing at. Chapter 9 of our Startup Playbook, Building in Romania, was written for founders operating in exactly this context. Link in the comments.

The first few hires a founder makes tend to say more about the company's future than the product itself. There is a natural pull toward hiring people who think the way the founder thinks, since it feels efficient in the early days. The teams that scale well tend to do the opposite, bringing in people whose strengths cover what the founder does not have, even when that hire feels less intuitive at first. Chapter 7 of the Startup Playbook looks at how founders can approach early hiring with that gap in mind. Find out more 📘 https://lnkd.in/dtpt7SJ4

Founders spend months polishing decks and roadmaps before confirming anyone actually wants what they're building. At our Startup Playbook launch, Carmen Dibus put it plainly: validation is the real work, from day one. Everything built without it stays decor. This idea sits at the core of our Startup Playbook and we wrote it because the same conversations kept repeating with founders at every stage. A well-built product with no path to its buyer is still an unsolved problem. 📄 Go-to-market strategy is frequently pushed to the end of the roadmap, treated as something to figure out once the product is ready. This sequencing tends to cost founders time they cannot get back, because the channels, positioning, and buyer conversations that actually work take longer to find than most timelines allow for. Chapter 4 of the 📘 Startup Playbook looks at what it means to build a go-to-market approach alongside the product, not after it. Link in the comments.
