Description

MULTI-SEALED PACKAGING SYSTEM AND PACKAGING MATERIAL FOR PRODUCTS SENSITIVE TO ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS
FIELD OF INVENTION
[0001] Accordingly, the present invention relates to packaging systems and materials for products sensitive to environmental conditions. Particularly, the present invention relates to a multi-sealed packaging system with at least two compartments separated by a connecting seal and packaging material with color-changing and auto-dissolving properties, for protecting environmentally sensitive products from exposure to moisture, oxygen, light, or other potentially damaging environmental factors.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
[0002] Packaging systems play a crucial role in protecting products sensitive to environmental conditions from exposure to potentially damaging factors such as temperature moisture, oxygen, and light, oxygen, carbon dioxide, pressure, humidity, radiation, air pollutants, vibration, or any other environmental factors. These systems are particularly important for preserving the quality, efficacy, and safety of various products, including pharmaceuticals, food items, biological samples, diagnostic reagents, electronic components, photosensitive materials, chemical compounds, vaccines, and precision instruments.
[0003] Many products, such as pharmaceuticals, food items, biological samples, and electronic components, paints, adhesive material, and other consumable and non-consumable products can be adversely affected by exposure to environmental factors like temperature, humidity, light, or air. Traditional packaging methods may not provide adequate protection for these sensitive products, particularly when the package is opened and partially used.
[0004] Traditional packaging methods often involve single-layer containers or bags that provide a basic barrier against environmental factors. However, these conventional approaches may not offer sufficient protection for highly sensitive products, especially over extended periods or in challenging storage conditions. Additionally, standard packaging materials typically lack the ability to indicate whether the contents have been exposed to harmful environmental conditions during storage or transportation. Furthermore, existing packaging systems are limited by their inability to maintain product integrity after initial opening, leading to rapid degradation of unused portions.
[0005] A significant challenge associated with conventional packaging systems is the risk of seal failure or physical damage, which can compromise the protective environment's integrity. This is especially problematic for products requiring extended storage periods or those subjected to rough handling during transportation. Moreover, once a package is opened, the remaining unused portion of the product often becomes vulnerable to environmental exposure, potentially shortening its shelf life or diminishing its effectiveness. An additional limitation of current packaging solutions is the inability to determine whether sensitive products have been exposed to harmful environmental conditions without breaching the package seal. This lack of visual indication creates uncertainty about product quality and may result in the inadvertent use of compromised materials.
[0006] Traditional liquid container medicines such as amoxicillin suspension, codeine cough syrup, children's liquid ibuprofen, oral rehydration solution, liquid vitamin C supplement, echinacea tincture, liquid iron supplement, prednisolone oral solution, and other similar formulations are commonly packaged in bottles or vials. These containers often bear printed expiration dates extending one year or more from the manufacturing date. However, a significant challenge arises once these containers are opened, as the medication's efficacy can rapidly decline, sometimes within days or a few months, regardless of the printed expiration date.
[0007] This discrepancy between the printed expiration date and the actual usable lifespan post-opening presents numerous issues, particularly in developing countries where healthcare resources are limited. Patients may open a container, use a portion of the medicine until their symptoms subside, and then store the remainder. This partially used medication may sit unused for an extended period, during which time its efficacy may diminish, or worse, it may become a breeding ground for harmful microorganisms. If a patient later attempts to use this stored, partially- used medication, they may be exposing themselves to ineffective treatment or potential health risks. The medication may have degraded to the point of being therapeutically useless, or it may have developed harmful byproducts or contaminants. This scenario not only wastes valuable medical resources but also potentially endangers patient health. For instance, a traditional liquid medicine container with a 1-year expiry date. Once opened, the medication's efficacy may significantly decrease within days or 1-2 months, even though the printed expiry date is much later. For instance, a patient may open a cough syrup bottle, use it for a week until symptoms subside, then store the remaining medication. If used months later, the medication may be ineffective or potentially harmful due to degradation from environmental exposure
[0008] In numerous cases, the minimum package size available for certain costly liquid medicines exceeds the quantity a single patient can consume within the recommended timeframe after opening. For instance, expensive ophthalmic solutions or specialized liquid antibiotics may come in volumes larger than needed for a typical treatment course. This often results in waste of the unused portion, as the medication's efficacy may diminish rapidly once exposed to environmental factors, regardless of the printed expiration date.
[0009] The issue is further compounded in regions where access to healthcare and medications is limited. In these areas, the waste of even small amounts of medication can have significant impacts on individual and public health outcomes. Patients may be reluctant to discard partially used medications due to cost or availability concerns, leading to the use of potentially harmful or ineffective treatments. Various prior art patent applications disclose packaging materials for protecting sensitive products. One patent application, WO2021137786A1, disclosed a multicompartment packaging system designed to store different materials separately without contact. The packaging features interior walls positioned to create a wide bonding surface at the top, with a U-shaped opening between them. An interior wall foil surface is created between compartments to ensure proper foil adhesion. However, the cited document focuses on separating materials within a package without addressing multiple protective layers against environmental factors or a visual indication of harmful exposure.
[0010] Another patent application, US20180257794A1, discloses a packaging material with color-changing properties for indicating exposure to environmental conditions. The material comprises a substrate and at least one thermochromic ink layer that changes color when exposed to temperatures above or below a predetermined threshold. However, this application focuses primarily on temperature indication and does not address protection against other environmental factors or provide a multi-sealed system for selective access to product portions.
[0011] Yet another European patent application, EP3088301B1, discloses a packaging material with a humidity indicator. The material comprises a substrate with a coating containing a humidity-sensitive dye that changes color when exposed to different levels of moisture. However, the cited document is focused solely on humidity indication and does not address protection against other environmental factors or provide a multi-sealed system for preserving unused product portions.
[0012] Keeping in view the challenges associated with the above state of art, there is a need for an improved multi-sealed packaging system with enhanced sealing mechanisms that addresses multiple aspects of environmental protection for sensitive products and packaging materials capable of indicating exposure to a broader range of environmental factors, thereby potentially extending product shelf life and improving safety across various industries dealing with environmentally sensitive materials.
OBJECTIVE OF THE INVENTION
[0013] The primary objective of the present invention is to provide a multi-sealed packaging system and packaging material that offers enhanced protection for products sensitive to environmental conditions.
[0014] Another objective of the present invention is to provide an improved packaging system with enhanced sealing mechanisms that address multiple aspects of environmental protection for sensitive products and packaging materials capable of indicating exposure to a broader range of environmental factors.

[0023] Yet another objective of the present invention is to provide a multi-seal packaging for small containers due to the nature of certain medications and their usage patterns.
[0024] Other objectives and advantages of the present invention will become apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein, by way of illustration and example, the aspects of the present invention are disclosed.
SUMMARY OF THE PRESENT INVENTION
[0025] The present invention relates to a multi-sealed packaging system for products sensitive to environmental conditions, comprising a container with at least two compartments each compartment positioned beneath another compartment and containing a portion of the product sensitive to environmental conditions; a main seal at the top; and a connecting seal beneath the uppermost compartment that maintains environmental isolation between compartments while allowing selective access to underlying compartment after the first has been accessed. [0038] The phrase “the multi-sealed packaging system” and the term “system” may be used interchangeably in the present disclosure.
[0039] Accordingly, the present invention relates to a packaging system and material for products sensitive to environmental conditions. Particularly, the present invention relates to a multi-sealed packaging system with at least two compartments separated by connecting seal and packaging material with color changing and auto-dissolving properties, may alert users to potential quality degradation of the environmentally sensitive products from exposure to temperature, moisture, oxygen, light, or other potentially damaging environmental factors.
[0040] In an embodiment, the multi-sealed packaging system (100) for products sensitive to environmental conditions comprises a container (102), a main seal (106), and a connecting seal (108). The system enhances product protection used in multiple doses over time, improves user experience, and potentially reduces costs associated with product spoilage or degradation due to environmental exposure. The components are described below in detail: [0041] The container (102) comprises at least two compartments (104), each positioned beneath the uppermost compartment as shown in Figure 1, Figure 2, and Figure 3. Each compartment contains a portion of the product sensitive to environmental conditions. The uppermost compartment of the container is openable from the upper end to access the first portion of the product sensitive to environmental conditions. In an alternate embodiment, the container may be designed to be openable from both top and bottom ends, with each end sealed and containing a portion of the total product sensitive to environmental conditions, allowing access to the contents from either direction.
[0042] The main seal (106) is located at the top of the container (102), providing initial protection for the contents as shown in Figure 1, Figure 2, and Figure 3.
[0043] The connecting seal (108) is located beneath the uppermost compartment of the container, separating the uppermost compartment from the underlying compartment(s) as Figure 1, Figure 2, and Figure 3. The connecting seal (108) is configured to maintain environmental isolation between the compartments while allowing selective access to the underlying compartment after the uppermost compartment has been accessed. This connecting seal (108) is designed to maintain environmental isolation between the compartments (106) while allowing selective access to the underlying compartment after the uppermost compartment has been accessed. In an exemplary embodiment, the connecting seal (108) is configured to be opened by a needle pointer or pressure to utilize the second portion of the product sensitive to environmental conditions contained in the underlying compartment.
[0044] In an exemplary embodiment, the material used in manufacturing the main seal (106), and connecting seal (108) may either be identical or different. In a preferred embodiment, a chemically inert material may be used for manufacturing the main seal (106), and the connecting seal (108). In a preferred embodiment, a chemically inert material may be used for manufacturing the main seal and the connecting seal. This material may be selected to ensure that material does not react with or alter the properties of the enclosed product, thereby maintaining product integrity. The choice of chemically inert material may vary depending on the specific requirements of the packaged product.
[0045] In another exemplary embodiment, the products sensitive to environmental conditions may be selected from a group consisting of, such as, but not limited to liquid or solid or powder medicine, liquid or solid or semi-solid food product, biological samples, diagnostic reagents, electronic components, photosensitive materials, chemical compounds, vaccines, precision instruments adhesives, sealants, and any other products sensitive to environmental conditions.
[0046] In an embodiment, as shown in Figure 1, Figure 2, and Figure 3, the multi-sealed packaging system (100) comprises multiple components that work together to protect product sensitive to environmental conditions. The container (102) includes at least two compartments (104) positioned beneath another compartment. Each compartment contains a portion of the environmentally sensitive product. The main seal (106) is located at the top of the container (102), acting as a first barrier, providing initial protection for the contents. Beneath the uppermost compartment, the connecting seal (108) separates the uppermost from the underlying compartment. This connecting seal (108) serves a dual purpose, maintaining environmental isolation between the compartments while also allowing selective access to the underlying compartment after the uppermost compartment has been accessed. The main seal (106) and connecting seal enable users to access a portion of the horizontally sealed sensitive product. This horizontal sealing approach divides the container into multiple sections, allowing users to open and use one compartment at a time while keeping the others sealed and protected. By utilizing horizontal seals, the packaging design efficiently separates the contents into discrete units that can be accessed sequentially, while preserving the integrity of the remaining contents in the sealed underlying compartment such that when the main seal is opened to access the uppermost compartment, the connecting seal continues to protect the product in the underlying compartment from environmental exposure.
[0047] The horizontal orientation of the seals, as shown in Figure 1 and Figure 2 may provide advantages in terms of manufacturing efficiency, ease of use, and compatibility with various container shapes and sizes. This design allows for controlled access to the contents, potentially extending the overall usability period of the product and reducing waste, especially for medications that have limited stability once exposed to environmental conditions such as temperature, moisture, light exposure, or any other environmental factors. .
[0048] The functioning of the main seal (106), connecting seal (108), and multiple compartments (104) creates a multi-seal packaging system (100) that may extend the usable life of sensitive product and reduce wastage of the product. By allowing selective access to portions of the product while maintaining environmental isolation for the remaining contents, the multisealed packaging system provides enhanced protection throughout the product life, from manufacturing to end-use.
[0049] In an exemplary embodiment, a multi-seal packaging system (100) is crucial even for small containers due to the nature of certain medications that are used in minute quantities. For instance, eye drops for glaucoma treatment or expensive liquid vitamins are typically administered in very small doses - often just a drop or two per use. However, the smallest practical container size may still hold more liquid than a single user or small family would consume within the recommended timeframe after opening. Once opened, these products may lose their efficacy or sterility within days or weeks, regardless of the printed expiration date. Multi-seal packaging solves this problem by dividing the small container into multiple individually sealed compartments. This allows users to open only the amount needed for a short period, preserving the sterility and efficacy of the remaining portions. As a result, patients can use the entire product before it expires, reducing waste, maintaining medication effectiveness, and potentially lowering overall costs, especially for high-value medications used in small quantities.
[0050] In another exemplary embodiment, the multi-sealed packaging system (100) is particularly useful for non-consumable items such as paints, adhesive materials, sealants, lubricants, and other products that degrade upon exposure to air or environmental factors. For these products, the multi-seal packaging offers significant advantages in preserving product quality and extending usability. For instance, a paint container utilizing this system may have multiple compartments, each sealed separately. When a user opens the first compartment to use a portion of the paint, the remaining paint in the underlying compartments stays protected from environmental exposure, preventing the formation of a skin on the paint surface and maintaining its original consistency. Similarly, for adhesives, which can quickly dry out or cure when exposed to environmental factors, the multi-seal system (100) ensures that unused portions remain in optimal condition for future use. This embodiment is especially beneficial for DIY enthusiasts and professionals who may use these products intermittently over extended periods. The system (100) allows users to access only the amount needed for a particular project while keeping the rest of the product fresh and ready for future use, thereby reducing waste and maintaining product efficacy over time. [0051] In yet another exemplary embodiment, the multi-sealed packaging system (100) comprises a container (102) that is openable from both ends, as shown in Figure 3, with a connecting seal (108) dividing the container (102) into at least two compartments. The container (102) also comprises a holder (114) on the exterior surface to securely grip and handle the container (102) during the use. This configuration can be conceptualized as at least two small packages adhered together, each with its own opening mechanism. The container (102) features a main seal at each end, allowing access to the respective compartments from either direction. The connecting seal (108) acts as a permanent barrier, maintaining complete separation and environmental isolation between the two compartments throughout the life of the package. This dual-ended design offers several advantages:
• It allows for the packaging of the same product in at least two separate compartments within a single container, each protected from the other and from external environmental factors.
• Users can access either compartment independently, which is particularly useful for products that need to be used in sequence or in specific ratios.
• The design can accommodate product with different shelf lives or environmental sensitivities within the same package.
• It provides flexibility in usage, allowing consumers to choose which end to open based on their immediate needs or preferences.
[0052] In an embodiment, the present invention also relates to a method for using the multisealed packaging system. The method comprises the following steps:
(a) opening the main seal at the top of a container;
(b) accessing the first portion of environmentally sensitive product in the uppermost compartment;
(c) opening the connecting seal beneath the first compartment;
(d) accessing the second portion of environmentally sensitive product in the underlying compartment; and
(e) repeating steps (a-d) for any additional compartments. [0053] In another embodiment, the present invention also relates to a packaging material (110) for products sensitive to environmental conditions. The packaging material (110) comprises a film (112) having color-changing and auto-dissolving properties as shown in Figure 4 and Figure 5.
[0054] As shown in Figure 5, the color-changing properties of the film (112) is based on environmental exposure of the product for a pre-determined time duration as per the guideline for safe use for that product. The film (112) is configured to change color or visual appearance when exposed to environmental factors exceeding a predetermined threshold for a predetermined time duration, tailored to a particular product type. In an exemplary embodiment, the film may comprise thermochromic materials selected from the group consisting of, such as, but not limited to, organic thermochromic materials, inorganic thermochromic materials, hybrid thermochromic materials, and any other thermochromic materials.
[0055] In another exemplary embodiment, environmental factors are selected from the group consisting of, such as, but not limited to, temperature, moisture, light exposure, or any other environmental factors.
[0056] In an embodiment, the film (112) may comprise light-sensitive materials configured to indicate exposure to light. In an exemplary embodiment, the light-sensitive materials selected from the group consisting of, such as, but not limited to graphene, carbon nanotube (CNT)-based composites, photochromic dyes, silver halide compounds, azobenzene derivatives, spiropyran compounds, diarylethene compounds, photosensitive polymers, quantum dots, photo luminescent materials and any other light-sensitive materials.
[0057] As shown in Figure 4, the auto-dissolving properties allow the film (112) to dissolve after a prescribed time period or when exposed to environmental factors exceeding a predetermined threshold for a predetermined time duration, providing an additional layer of indication for environmental exposure or product expiration. In an exemplary embodiment, the film (112) may comprise materials that can dissolve or degrade in response to environmental triggers such as temperature, moisture, moisture, light exposure, or any other environmental factors. The choice of material may vary depending on specific environmental sensitivities and shelf-life requirements of the packaged product.
[0058] In an embodiment, as shown in Figure 4 and Figure 5, the color-changing and autodissolving properties of the packaging material (110) can be fine-tuned to match the specific environmental sensitivities of the packaged product. For instance, the predetermined thresholds and time durations for color change or dissolution can be adjusted based on the stability profile of the product. This customization allows for packaging that provides an accurate and timely indication of potential product degradation due to environmental exposure.
[0059] The advantages of a multi-sealed packaging system and color-changing packaging material are discussed herein:
• The present invention provides a cost-effective and economical multi-sealed packaging system and packaging material.
• The multi-sealed packaging system with separate seals offers improved protection for environmentally sensitive products. Each compartment maintains environmental isolation, reducing exposure risks for unused portions.
• The multi-sealed packaging system extends the shelf life of the product by preserving the unused product from environmental conditions.
• The multi-sealed packaging system allows users to access a portion of the product while keeping the remainder protected from environmental exposure. This feature is particularly beneficial for diagnostic reagents, vaccines, and solid food products, medicines that may degrade quickly upon exposure.
• The multi-sealed packaging system minimizes waste by allowing users to access only the needed amount of product.
• The color-changing packaging material provides a clear, visual indicator of potential environmental exposure, alerting users to possible compromises in product quality;
• The auto-dissolving property enables the film to dissolve after a prescribed time period or when exposed to environmental factors exceeding a predetermined threshold for a predetermined time duration;
• By utilizing multiple compartments (104) separated by connecting seals (108), the system provides enhanced protection against total product loss. In the event that one compartment is compromised due to accidental breakage or damage, the other sealed compartments remain intact and unaffected. This compartmentalization ensures that a significant portion of the product can be saved and remains usable, even if part of the container is damaged.
[0060] While this invention has been described in connection with what is presently considered to be the most practical and preferred embodiment, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the disclosed embodiments, but, on the contrary, is intended to cover various modifications and equivalent arrangements included within the scope of the appended claims.
