- solid granular material refers to a material made up of a collection of discrete solid and macroscopic particles.
- Solid granular materials have particular physical properties. The solid, macroscopic particles are surrounded by a gas or a liquid. Due to the size of the solid granular material, the ratio of the volume of the solid to the fluid phase (liquid or gas) is high, meaning that the macroscopic particles are in close contact with one another.
- Solid granular materials share properties typical for solids and liquids: granular materials can withstand deformation and form heaps like solids while also flowing like liquids and exhibiting compressibility such as fluids in general.
- Solid granular materials are meta-stable in that they are in a static solid-like state as ground state but can flow like fluid when an energy source is provided. All motions of granular materials require an external source of energy to overcome the loss of energy in the particle interactions.
- the term “liquid additive” as used herein refers to a volatile or non-volatile chemical liquid substance that introduces or improves certain properties to/of the solid granular material. The liquid additive may be introduced before or during the manufacturing process of the solid granular material.
- liquid additive in accordance with the invention comprises or preferably consists of substances of the group selected from humectant, emollient, granulation liquid, and mixtures thereof.

- emollient is used herein in its common meaning in the art.
- carrier refers to a compound that provides a general structure to the solid granular material.
- the carrier holds the other components of the solid granular material together without reacting with them or external components.
- carrier carrier material
- matrix material are used interchangeably herein.
- surfactant refers to surface active agents that decrease the surface tension or the interfacial tension between two phases, e.g. two liquids, a gas and a liquid or a liquid and a solid.
- surfactants also: surface-active agents
- amphiphilic molecules which comprise a nonpolar, hydrophobic portion (typically a straight or branched hydrocarbon chain containing between eight and 26 carbon atoms) which is attached to a polar hydrophilic portion.
- the hydrophilic portion can be nonionic, ionic, or zwitterionic, and may be accompanied by counterions in case of the ionic or zwitterionic portion.
- a typical mode of action of a surfactant is that the surfactant molecule orients itself at the interface between two phases with the hydrophobic portion oriented towards the hydrophobic phase (e,g, air/oil) and the hydrophilic portion oriented towards the hydrophilic phase (e.g. aqueous solution). This typically results in a lowering of the surface tension or the interfacial tension.
- surfactant is used herein in its common meaning in the art.
- active agent refers to a compound in a cosmetic composition that helps preserve the skin, hair, or other body parts in their natural condition and to objectively modify or improve the condition of the skin, hair, or other body parts as well as to protect the skin, hair, or other body parts.

- the solid blend was transferred to a planetary mixter (Thinky® mixer model ARE-250) and 6.9 g dicaprylyl carbonate (emollient, Cetiol® CC from BASF care creations) was added and the mixtures was mixed to obtain a premix 1.
- a planetary mixter Thinky® mixer model ARE-250
- dicaprylyl carbonate emollient, Cetiol® CC from BASF care creations
- the mixture was humidified prior to the extrusion process by adding 1.5 g deionized water (granulation liquid). Subsequently, the humidified mixture was extruded using a Caleva Multilab (CML) extrusion system comprising a multi-die plate with 26 holes with a 1 mm diameter at a rotation speed of approximately 100 rpm. The same system was used to spheronize the extruded product. After spheronization, the particles were dried overnight in a fume hood.

- Example 4 Granules for sunscreen with water
- a premix 1 was prepared by mixing 2.5 g lactose (carrier) with 10 g 2-phenylbenzimidazole- 5-sulfonic acid (PBSA, UV filter, Eusolex® 232 from Merck KGaA), 3 g sodium carbonate (pH adjustment), and 1 g xanthan gum (thickener; Rheocare® XGN from BASF care creations) in a stand mixer.
- a premix 2 comprising 0.13 g polysorbate 80 (surfactant, Tween® 80), 0.12 g sorbitan monooleate (surfactant, Span® 80), and 0.75 g Caprylic/capric triglycerides (emollient, Miglyol® 812) was prepared and added to the premix 1. 3 g water (granulation liquid) was added stepwise to the mixture.
- the mixture was then extruded and spheronized using a Caleva Multilab (CML) extrusion system comprising a multi-die plate with 26 holes with a 1 mm diameter at a rotation speed of approximately 100 rpm.
- CML Caleva Multilab
- the granules obtained were redispersed adding 16 g warm water (-40° C) to 4 g of granules by manual shaking. The granules dissolved well and resulted in a homogenous mixture, ready-to-use as sunscreen.
- Example 5 Granules for sunscreen without water
- a premix 1 was prepared by mixing 1.25 g lactose (carrier) with 5 g 2-phenylbenzimidazole- 5-sulfonic acid (PBSA, UV filter, Eusolex® 232 from Merck KGaA), 1.5 g sodium carbonate (pH adjustment), and 0.5 g xanthan gum (thickener; Rheocare® XGN from BASF care creations) in a stand mixer.
