BACKGROUND Field of Disclosure
[0002] The present disclosure relates generally to the field of wireless communications, and more specifically to positioning a target User Equipment (UE) using distributed reconfigurable intelligent device(s) RID(s). Description of Related Art
[0003] In a wireless communication network, positioning of a receiving device (e.g., a target UE) can involve measurements of a radio frequency (RF) signal (e.g., a wireless reference signal) received by the receiving device. In some instances, RID(s) may be used to enhance the positioning of the target UE.
BRIEF SUMMARY
[0004] An example method of positioning of a target UE in a presence of a distributed RID, the method performed by a server and may comprise receiving, from the target UE, information of the distributed RID indicating an availability of the distributed RID, wherein the positioning of the target UE may be performed using the distributed RID, and wherein the distributed RID is controlled by a distributed controller not being a network node. When the RID is controllable, the controller of the RID (RID-C) may communicate with other network nodes to determine the RID configuration for positioning the target UE.

Here, the 5G NR positioning system 200 comprises a UE 105, and components of a 5G NR network comprising a Next Generation (NG) Radio Access Network (RAN) (NG-RAN) 235 and a 5G Core Network (5G CN) 240. A 5G network may also be referred to as an NR network; NG-RAN 235 may be referred to as a 5G RAN or as an NR RAN; and 5G CN 240 may be referred to as an NG Core network. 5G NR positioning system 200 may further utilize information from GNSS satellites 110 from a GNSS system like Global Positioning System (GPS) or similar system (e.g., GLONASS, Galileo, Beidou, Indian Regional Navigational Satellite System (IRNSS)). When computing the location of a UE, it is common to solve for local X, Y, and possibly Z coordinates and then, if needed, convert the local coordinates into absolute ones (e.g., for latitude, longitude and altitude above or below mean sea level).

Some gNBs 210 (e.g., gNB 210-2 and/or another gNB not shown) and/or ng-eNB 214 may be configured to function as detecting-only nodes may scan for signals containing, e.g., PRS data, assistance data, or other location data. Such detecting-only nodes may not transmit signals or data to UEs but may transmit signals or data (relating to, e.g., PRS, assistance data, or other location data) to other network entities (e.g., one or more components of 5G CN 240, external client 230, or a controller) which may receive and store or use the data for positioning of at least UE 105. It is noted that while only one ng-eNB 214 is shown in FIG. 2, some embodiments may include multiple ng-eNBs 214. Base stations (e.g., gNBs 210 and/or ng-eNB 214) may communicate directly with one another via an Xn communication interface. Additionally or alternatively, base stations may communicate directly or indirectly with other components of the 5G NR positioning system 200, such as the LMF 220 and AMF 215.

The N3IWF 250 may provide support for secure access by UE 105 to other elements in 5G CN 240 and/or may support interworking of one or more protocols used by WLAN 216 and UE 105 to one or more protocols used by other elements of 5G CN 240 such as AMF 215. For example, N3IWF 250 may support IPSec tunnel establishment with UE 105, termination of IKEv2/IPSec protocols with UE 105, termination of N2 and N3 interfaces to 5G CN 240 for control plane and user plane, respectively, relaying of uplink (UL) and downlink (DL) control plane Non-Access Stratum (NAS) signaling between UE 105 and AMF 215 across an N1 interface. In some other embodiments, WLAN 216 may connect directly to elements in 5G CN 240 (e.g. AMF 215 as shown by the dashed line in FIG. 2) and not via N3IWF 250. For example, direct connection of WLAN 216 to 5GCN 240 may occur if WLAN 216 is a trusted WLAN for 5GCN 240 and may be enabled using a Trusted WLAN Interworking Function (TWIF) (not shown in FIG. 2) which may be an element inside WLAN 216. It is noted that while only one WLAN 216 is shown in FIG. 2, some embodiments may include multiple WLANs 216.

For example, in a 4G Evolved Packet System (EPS) providing LTE wireless access to UE 105, a RAN may comprise an E-UTRAN, which may comprise base stations comprising eNBs supporting LTE wireless access. A core network for EPS may comprise an Evolved Packet Core (EPC). An EPS may then comprise an E-UTRAN plus an EPC, where the E-UTRAN corresponds to NG-RAN 235 and the EPC corresponds to 5GCN 240 in FIG. 2. The methods and techniques described herein for obtaining a civic location for UE 105 may be applicable to such other networks.

The method of any of clauses 1-6, wherein the second RID configuration comprises a list of time divisional duplex (TDD) slots configuring the distributed RID: to turn OFF on the listed TDD slots; to use a polarization signature on the listed TDD slots; to transmit signals on the listed TDD slots according to a predetermined transmit power or predetermined beamforming parameters; or any combination thereof.
Clause 8. The method of any of clauses 1-7, further comprising: sending the second RID configuration to the distributed RID configuring the distributed RID to operate on predetermined time intervals.
Clause 9. The method of any of clauses 1-8, further comprising: positioning the distributed controller; and obtaining a relative position of the distributed RID and the distributed controller, wherein the first RID configuration or the second RID configuration is determined at least based on the position of the distributed controller and the relative position of the distributed RID and the distributed controller.
Clause 10. The method of any of clauses 1-9, further comprising: determining a list of neighboring UEs, wherein each of the neighboring UEs locates within a predetermined threshold distance from the distributed RID; and sending the second RID configuration to the neighboring UEs indicating the presence of the distributed RID over a device-to-device link, wherein the neighboring UEs are positioned in accordance with the second RID configuration.
Clause 11. The method of any of clauses 1-10, wherein the list of neighboring UEs is determined based on: cell IDs of the neighboring UEs and the distributed controller; Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based location information of the neighboring UEs and the distributed controller; comparing estimate positions of the neighboring UEs with a GNSS position of the target UE or a position of the distributed controller; or any combination thereof.
Clause 12. The method of any of clauses 1-11, wherein the second RID configuration configures each of the neighboring UEs to: determine one or more first measurements during ON periods of the distributed RID; transmit the one or more first measurements to the server; and determine one or more first second measurements at a time different from the ON periods of the distributed RID.
Clause 13. An example method of positioning of a target UE in a presence of a RID, the method performed by the target UE and may comprise determining that a distributed RID may be used in positioning of the target UE, wherein the distributed RID is controlled by a distributed controller not being a network node. The method may also comprise sending, to a server, information of the distributed RID indicating availability of the distributed RID and receiving, from the server, a first RID configuration for the positioning of the target UE determined based at least in part on the information of the distributed RID.
Clause 14. The method of the clause 13, wherein the information of the distributed RID indicates: the target UE is capable of controlling the distributed RID; a unique ID associated with the distributed controller or the distributed RID; an additional processing delay associated with the distributed RID; a position information of the distributed RID; or any combination thereof.
Clause 15. The method of any of clause 13 or 14, further comprising: transmitting, to the server, additional information indicating a position measurement performed based on the distributed RID, wherein the first RID configuration is determined at least based on the additional information.
Clause 16. The method of any of clauses 13-15, further comprising: determining a second RID configuration based on an ON-OFF schedule of the distributed RID for reducing interference associated with the positioning of the target UE caused by the distributed RID.
Clause 17. The method of any of clauses 13-16 further comprising: receiving, from the target UE, usage information of the distributed RID indicating: time and frequency resources over which the RID is available for signal amplification or redirection; a directional relationship between a primary beam pair link between the target UE and a base station and a beam pair link through the distributed RID; or any combination thereof, wherein the first RID configuration or the second RID configuration is further determined based on the usage information of the distributed RID. Clause 18. The method of any of clauses 13-17, wherein the usage information of the RID comprises the TCI-state IDs associated with the RID and the QCL relationship between the direct path and the path through the RID between the target UE and the base station as determined at the target UE.
Clause 19. The method of any of clauses 13-18, wherein the second RID configuration comprises a list of time divisional duplex (TDD) slots configuring the distributed RID: to turn OFF on the listed TDD slots; to use a polarization signature on the listed TDD slots; to transmit signals on the listed TDD slots according to a predetermined transmit power or predetermined beamforming parameters; or any combination thereof.
Clause 20. The method of any of clauses 13-19, further comprising: obtaining a list of neighboring UEs, wherein each of the neighboring UEs locates within a predetermined threshold distance from the distributed RID; and notifying, the neighboring UEs, usage information of the distributed RID indicating: time and frequency resources over which the RID is turned ON; a position of the distributed RID or the distributed controller; an indication of a direction impact of the distributed RID; or any combination thereof.
Clause 21. An example server for positioning of a target UE in a presence of a distributed RID comprising a transceiver, a memory, and one or more processors communicatively coupled with the transceiver and the memory. The one or more processors may be configured to receive, from the target UE, information of the distributed RID indicating an availability of the distributed RID, wherein the positioning of the target UE may be performed using the distributed RID, and wherein the distributed RID is controlled by a distributed controller not being a network node. The one or more processors may also be configured to determine a first RID configuration for positioning of the target UE based at least in part on the information of the distributed RID. The one or more processors may further be configured to send to the target UE the first RID configuration for positioning the target UE.
Clause 22. The server of the clause 21, wherein the information of the distributed RID indicates: the target UE is capable of controlling the distributed RID; a unique ID associated with the distributed controller or the distributed RID; an additional processing delay associated with the distributed RID; a position information of the distributed RID; or any combination thereof.
Clause 23. The server of any of clause 21 or 22, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to: receive, from the target UE, additional information indicating a position measurement performed based on the distributed RID, wherein the first RID configuration is determined at least based on the additional information.
Clause 24. The server of any of clauses 21-23, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to: determine a second RID configuration based on an ON-OFF schedule of the distributed RID for reducing interference associated with the positioning of the target UE caused by the distributed RID.
Clause 25. The server of any of clauses 21-24, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to: receive, from the target UE, usage information of the distributed RID indicating: time and frequency resources over which the RID is available for signal amplification or redirection; a directional relationship between a primary beam pair link between the target UE and a base station and a beam pair link through the distributed RID; or any combination thereof, wherein the first RID configuration or the second RID configuration is further determined based on the usage information of the distributed RID.
Clause 26. The server of any of clauses 21-25, wherein the usage information of the RID comprises the TCI-state IDs associated with the RID and the QCL relationship between the direct path and the path through the RID between the target UE and the base station as determined at the target UE.
Clause 27. An example target UE for positioning in a presence of a RID comprising a transceiver, a memory, and one or more processors communicatively coupled with the transceiver and the memory. The one or more processors may be configured to determine that a distributed RID may be used in positioning of the target UE, wherein the distributed RID is controlled by a distributed controller not being a network node. The one or more processors may also be configured to send, to a server, information of the distributed RID indicating availability of the distributed RID. The one or more processors may further be configured to receive, from the server, a first RID configuration for the positioning of the target UE determined based at least in part on the information of the distributed RID.
Clause 28. The target UE of the clause 27, wherein the information of the distributed RID indicates: the target UE is capable of controlling the distributed RID; a unique ID associated with the distributed controller or the distributed RID; an additional processing delay associated with the distributed RID; a position information of the distributed RID; or any combination thereof.
Clause 29. The target UE of any of clause 27 or 28, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to: transmit, to the server, additional information indicating a position measurement performed based on the distributed RID, wherein the first RID configuration is determined at least based on the additional information.
Clause 30. The target UE of any of clauses 27-29, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to: receive a second RID configuration based on an ON-OFF schedule of the distributed RID for reducing interference associated with the positioning of the target UE caused by the distributed RID.

Claims

WHAT IS CLAIMED IS:
1. A method of positioning of a target User Equipment (UE) in a presence of a distributed reconfigurable intelligent device (RID), the method performed by a server and comprising: receiving, from the target UE, information of the distributed RID indicating an availability of the distributed RID, wherein the positioning of the target UE may be performed using the distributed RID, and wherein the distributed RID is controlled by a distributed controller not being a network node; determining a first RID configuration for positioning of the target UE based at least in part on the information of the distributed RID; and sending to the target UE the first RID configuration for positioning the target UE.
2. The method of claim 1, wherein the information of the distributed RID indicates: the target UE is capable of controlling the distributed RID; a unique identification (ID) associated with the distributed controller or the distributed RID; an additional processing delay associated with the distributed RID; a position information of the distributed RID; or any combination thereof.
3. The method of claim 1, further comprising: receiving, from the target UE, additional information indicating a position measurement performed based on the distributed RID, wherein the first RID configuration is determined at least based on the additional information.
4. The method of claim 1, further comprising: determining, based on an ON-OFF schedule of the distributed RID, a second RID configuration for reducing interference associated with the positioning of the target UE caused by the distributed RID.
5. The method of claim 4, further comprising: receiving, from the target UE, usage information of the distributed RID indicating: time and frequency resources over which the RID is available for signal amplification or redirection; a directional relationship between a primary beam pair link between the target UE and a base station and a beam pair link through the distributed RID; or any combination thereof, wherein the first RID configuration or the second RID configuration is further determined based on the usage information of the distributed RID.
6. The method of claim 5, wherein the usage information of the RID comprises TCI-state IDs associated with the RID and a QCL relationship between a direct path and a path through the RID between the target UE and the base station as determined at the target UE.
7. The method of claim 4, wherein the second RID configuration comprises a list of time divisional duplex (TDD) slots configuring the distributed RID: to turn OFF on the listed TDD slots; to use a polarization signature on the listed TDD slots; to transmit signals on the listed TDD slots according to a predetermined transmit power or predetermined beamforming parameters; or any combination thereof.
8. The method of claim 4, further comprising: sending the second RID configuration to the distributed RID configuring the distributed RID to operate on predetermined time intervals.
9. The method of claim 4, further comprising: positioning the distributed controller; and obtaining a relative position of the distributed RID with respect to the distributed controller, wherein the first RID configuration or the second RID configuration is determined at least based on the position of the distributed controller and the relative position of the distributed RID and the distributed controller.
10. The method of claim 4, further comprising: determining a list of neighboring UEs, wherein each of the neighboring UEs locates within a predetermined threshold distance from the distributed RID; and sending the second RID configuration to the neighboring UEs indicating the presence of the distributed RID over a device-to-device link, wherein the neighboring UEs are positioned in accordance with the second RID configuration.
11. The method of claim 10, wherein the list of neighboring UEs is determined based on: cell IDs of the neighboring UEs and the distributed controller;
Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS)-based location information of the neighboring UEs and the distributed controller; comparing estimate positions of the neighboring UEs with a GNSS position of the target UE or a position of the distributed controller; or any combination thereof.
12. The method of claim 10, wherein the second RID configuration configures each of the neighboring UEs to: determine one or more first measurements during ON periods of the distributed RID; transmit the one or more first measurements to the server; and determine one or more second measurements at a time different from the ON periods of the distributed RID.
13. A method of positioning of a target User Equipment (UE) in a presence of a distributed reconfigurable intelligent device (RID), the method performed by the target UE and comprising: determining that a distributed RID may be used in positioning of the target UE, wherein the distributed RID is controlled by a distributed controller not being a network node; sending, to a server, information of the distributed RID indicating availability of the distributed RID; and receiving, from the server, a first RID configuration for the positioning of the target UE determined based at least in part on the information of the distributed RID.
14. The method of claim 13, wherein the information of the distributed RID indicates: the target UE is capable of controlling the distributed RID; a unique identification (ID) associated with the distributed controller or the distributed RID; an additional processing delay associated with the distributed RID; a position information of the distributed RID; or any combination thereof.
15. The method of claim 13, further comprising: transmitting, to the server, additional information indicating a position measurement performed based on the distributed RID, wherein the first RID configuration is determined at least based on the additional information.
16. The method of claim 13, further comprising: receiving a second RID configuration based on an ON-OFF schedule of the distributed RID for reducing interference associated with the positioning of the target UE caused by the distributed RID.
17. The method of claim 16, further comprising: receiving, from the distributed controller, usage information of the distributed RID indicating: time and frequency resources over which the RID is available for signal amplification or redirection; a directional relationship between a primary beam pair link between the target UE and a base station and a beam pair link through the distributed RID; or any combination thereof, transmitting, to the server, the usage information of the distributed RID for determining the first RID configuration or the second RID configuration.
18. The method of claim 17, the usage information of the RID comprises TCI-state IDs associated with the RID and a QCL relationship between a direct path and a path through the RID between the target UE and the base station as determined at the target UE.
19. The method of claim 16, wherein the second RID configuration comprises a list of time divisional duplex (TDD) slots configuring the distributed RID: to turn OFF on the listed TDD slots; to use a polarization signature on the listed TDD slots; to transmit signals on the listed TDD slots according to a predetermined transmit power or predetermined beamforming parameters; or any combination thereof.
20. The method of claim 16, further comprising: obtaining a list of neighboring UEs, wherein each of the neighboring UEs locates within a predetermined threshold distance from the distributed RID; and notifying, the neighboring UEs, usage information of the distributed RID indicating: time and frequency resources over which the RID is turned ON; a position of the distributed RID or the distributed controller; an indication of a direction impact of the distributed RID; or any combination thereof.
21. A server for positioning of a target User Equipment (UE) in a presence of a distributed reconfigurable intelligent device (RID), comprising: a transceiver; a memory; and one or more processors communicatively coupled with the transceiver and the memory, wherein the one or more processors are configured to: receive, from the target UE, information of the distributed RID indicating an availability of the distributed RID, wherein the positioning of the target UE may be performed using the distributed RID, and wherein the distributed RID is controlled by a distributed controller not being a network node; determine a first RID configuration for positioning of the target UE based at least in part on the information of the distributed RID; and send to the target UE the first RID configuration for positioning the target UE.
22. The server of claim 21, wherein the information of the distributed RID indicates: the target UE is capable of controlling the distributed RID; a unique identification (ID) associated with the distributed controller or the distributed RID; an additional processing delay associated with the distributed RID; a position information of the distributed RID; or any combination thereof.
23. The server of claim 21, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to: receive, from the target UE, additional information indicating a position measurement performed based on the distributed RID, wherein the first RID configuration is determined at least based on the additional information.
24. The server of claim 21, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to: determine a second RID configuration, based on an ON-OFF schedule of the distributed RID, for reducing interference associated with the positioning of the target UE caused by the distributed RID.
25. The server of claim 24, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to: receive, from the target UE, usage information of the distributed RID indicating: time and frequency resources over which the RID is available for signal amplification or redirection; a directional relationship between a primary beam pair link between the target UE and a base station and a beam pair link through the distributed RID; or any combination thereof, wherein the first RID configuration or the second RID configuration is further determined based on the usage information of the distributed RID.
26. The server of claim 25, wherein the usage information of the RID comprises TCI-state IDs associated with the RID and a QCL relationship between a direct path and a path through the RID between the target UE and the base station as determined at the target UE.
27. A target User Equipment (UE) for positioning in a presence of a distributed reconfigurable intelligent device (RID), comprising: a transceiver; a memory; and one or more processors communicatively coupled with the transceiver and the memory, wherein the one or more processors are configured to: determine that a distributed RID may be used in positioning of the target UE, wherein the distributed RID is controlled by a distributed controller not being a network node; send, to a server, information of the distributed RID indicating availability of the distributed RID; and receive, from the server, a first RID configuration for the positioning of the target UE determined based at least in part on the information of the distributed RID.
28. The target UE of claim 27, wherein the information of the distributed RID indicates: the target UE is capable of controlling the distributed RID; a unique identification (ID) associated with the distributed controller or the distributed RID; an additional processing delay associated with the distributed RID; a position information of the distributed RID; or any combination thereof.
29. The target UE of claim 27, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to: transmit, to the server, additional information indicating a position measurement performed based on the distributed RID, wherein the first RID configuration is determined at least based on the additional information.
30. The target UE of claim 27, wherein the one or more processors are further configured to: receive a second RID configuration based on an ON-OFF schedule of the distributed RID for reducing interference associated with the positioning of the target UE caused by the distributed RID.
