Abstract

A wound monitoring system comprises a microneedle scaffold layer including a microneedle array positioned on a first surface of the microneedle scaffold layer, a microfluidics layer above the microneedle scaffold layer and opposite the microneedle array, and a sensor layer above the microfluidic layer and opposite the microneedle scaffold layer. A wound monitoring method comprises providing and applying the system to a subject to collect interstitial fluid (ISF) from the microneedle array to the assay chamber via the microneedle scaffold layer and the microfluidics layer, collecting physiological data based on dielectric or chemical properties of the ISF as measured by the electrochemical sensor array, and categorizing a wound physiological state. A microneedle array comprises a plurality of microneedles comprising polylactic acid (PLA), wherein the microneedles have a height of 500- 950 pm, base diameter of 150-450 pm, swelling percentage of 25%-175%, and porosity of 30%- 80%.
