PIEZOELECTRIC FILM WITH CONDUCTIVE ELECTRODES DEPOSITED USING ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE PLASMA COATING
CROSS-REFERENCE TO RELATED APPLICATIONS

BACKGROUND
[0002] Piezoelectric devices may be used for applications in many areas including, but not limited to, biomedicine, defense technology, nano-devices, micro electromechanical systems (MEMS) and mechanical energy harvesters (MEHs). Broadly speaking, piezoelectric devices may be useful for any application involving a conversion between mechanical energy and electrical energy. Examples include input devices such as touch sensor devices (e.g., touchpads or touch sensor devices) that are widely used in a variety of electronic systems. A touch sensor device typically includes a sensing region, often demarked by a surface, in which the touch sensor device determines the presence, location and/or motion of one or more input objects. Touch sensor devices may be used to provide interfaces for the electronic system. For example, touch sensor devices are often used as input devices for larger computing systems (such as opaque touchpads integrated in, or peripheral to, notebook or desktop computers or transparent touchpads integrated in touch displays). A piezoelectric film may be used for the described piezoelectric devices. The piezoelectric film may have an electrical interface, e.g., in the form of electrodes. The electrodes may be deposited on the surface of piezoelectric film.

[0017] In general, embodiments of the disclosure include piezoelectric devices based on piezoelectric films with carbon nanotube (CNT)-based electrodes and a method of manufacturing piezoelectric devices based on PVDF piezoelectric films with CNT-based electrodes. The piezoelectric devices may be used in any application involving a conversion between mechanical energy and electrical energy. Embodiments of the disclosure as subsequently described have various advantages. For example, as discussed in detail below, a piezoelectric device in accordance with one or more embodiments is easy to manufacture, requires relatively few components, and provides good optical transparency. The optical transparency may make the piezoelectric device suitable for use in conjunction with displays. Further, a piezoelectric device in accordance with embodiments of the disclosure may be relatively flexible or bendable, thus making it suitable for non-rigid applications. Input devices (e.g., touch or force sensing input devices) based on the piezoelectric devices may have advantages over other touch sensing technologies. For example, in comparison to capacitive touch sensing, piezoelectric touch sensing in accordance with one or more embodiments is more robust to environmental influences such as moisture. Thus, piezoelectric devices in accordance with embodiments of the disclosure are particularly suitable for a wide range of applications and operating environments, including wet or even underwater environments, applications in which mechanical flexibility is required or desired, applications in which optical transparency is required or desired, etc. A detailed description is subsequently provided.
[0018] FIG. 1 is a block diagram of an example piezoelectric input device (100), in accordance with one or more embodiments. The piezoelectric input device (100) may be configured to perform a touch and/or force sensing to provide input to an electronic system (not shown). As used in this document, the term “electronic system” (or “electronic device”) broadly refers to any system capable of electronically processing information. Some non-limiting examples of electronic systems include personal computers, such as desktop computers, laptop computers, tablets, machinery and medical devices with at least some degree of computing capability, etc. Further example electronic systems include peripherals, such as data input devices (including remote controls, mice, haptic input devices or sensing devices including robotic probes, hands, pressure measurement devices, etc.), and data output devices (including display screens and printers). Other examples include remote terminals, kiosks, and video game machines (e.g., video game consoles, portable gaming devices, and the like). Other examples include communication devices (including cellular phones, such as smart phones), and media devices (including recorders, editors, and players such as televisions, set-top boxes, music players, digital photo frames, and digital cameras). Additionally, the electronic system could be a host or a slave to the input device.
[0019] In FIG. 1, the piezoelectric input device (100) is shown as a touch sensor device (e.g., “touchpad” or a “touch sensor device”) configured to sense input provided by one or more input objects in a sensing region (120). Example input objects include styli, fingers (140), etc.
[0020] The sensing region (120) encompasses any space above, around, in and/or near the input device (100) in which the input device (100) is able to detect user input (e.g., user input provided by one or more input objects). The sizes, shapes, and locations of particular sensing regions may vary widely from embodiment to embodiment.
[0021] The input device (100) may use any combination of sensor components and technologies to detect user input in the sensing region (120). The input device (100) includes one or more sensing elements for detecting user input. The sensing elements may be piezoelectric. When a force load is applied to a piezoelectric material (e.g., a non-centro symmetric material whose polarization moves to positive or negative direction according to the direction of the applied force), the charge balance in the piezoelectric material changes. By measuring the induced voltage, the touch event associated with the force load may be determined, and the applied force may be calculated.

Accordingly, a location of the touch event in the input region (120) may be determined. [0023] In FIG. 1, a processing system (110) is shown as part of the input device (100). The processing system (110) is configured to operate the hardware of the input device (100) to detect input in the sensing region (120). The processing system (110) includes parts of or all of one or more integrated circuits (ICs) and/or other circuitry components. The atmospheric plasma coating may result in a superior adhesiveness between the piezoelectric film and the electrodes. Unlike some other coating processes which result in very limited adhesiveness, e.g., because the adhesion is primarily governed by relatively weak van der Waals forces, the adhesiveness obtained using atmospheric pressure plasma coating may be sufficient to resist removal by touch, swiping, and/or other forms of manipulation. In one or more embodiments, the adhesiveness is characterized using a bending test. A change in sheet resistance, resulting from the bending may be indicative of adhesiveness. Specifically, a more significant increase in sheet resistance may suggest weaker adhesiveness, whereas a less significant increase in sheet resistance may suggest stronger adhesiveness. The bending test may be performed using a bending machine, and may be automated to measure sheet resistance for different bending radii, repetitive bending, etc. In one or more embodiments, the adhesiveness is characterized using a tape test, e.g. as established by ASTM 3359. ASTM Document D3359-17 “Standard Test Methods for Rating Adhesion by Tape Test” is hereby incorporated by reference in its entirety. For example, in accordance with ASTM 3359, Test Method B, the adhesive strength between the electrode and piezoelectric film may be evaluated in a crosscut test. On a specific area, a grid incision may be made with a cutter or appropriate metal blade, all the way down to the substrate. Evenly spaced incisions may be made horizontally and vertically to create a lattice pattern on the surface of the test area. Next, adhesive tape may be applied to cover the cut area, followed by a vigorously performed removal of the adhesive tape. The area may be observed to determine the result. More specifically, the adhesion is evaluated based on a percentage of flaking. In embodiments of the disclosure, a flaking of less than 65%, preferably 35%, more preferably 15%, more preferably 5%, or 0% may be considered an indication of acceptable adhesiveness. A classification of the adhesiveness may thus be obtained based on the degree of flaking, e.g., in accordance with ASTM 3359.

Mechanical approaches include, for example, ultrasonication and high- shear mixing. Chemical approaches include covalent methods involving functionalization, and non-covalent methods involving chemical moieties. Surfactants may be used to facilitate dispersion. In one embodiment, a nanotube solvent, capable of dissolution of the CNT molecules is used to create a CNT solution. As an example, the carbon nanotube solvent may be an acid, such as chloro sulfonic acid (HSO3CI), fluorosulfonic acid, fluorosulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, methanesulfonic acid, nitric acid, hydrofluoric acid, fluoroantimonic acid, magic acid, or any other type of carborane-based acid. As another example, the nanotube solvent may be a supercritical fluid, which is a substance at a temperature and pressure above its critical point. The nanotube solvent as the supercritical fluid provides screening of the electrostatic interactions between solute molecules, in this case the CNT molecules, to negate surface tension effects and particle-particle interactions and enable solution. Past the critical point of the nanotube solvent, its temperature and pressure may be regulated to maintain maximum solubility of the CNT molecules such that the nanotube solvent in the supercritical state can be considered athermal for all effective purposes. As an example, the nanotube solvent 204 as the super critical fluid can include supercritical carbon dioxide.
[0063] In one or more embodiments, additional components are added to the dispersion or solution. For example, silver nanowires may be mixed into the dispersion or solution. Any amount of silver nanowires may be added. For example, silver nanowires may be added to reach a concentration anywhere between 0.01 mg / ml and 0.1 mg / ml. In one or more embodiments, a doping of the CNTs may be performed. The doping may be performed on the CNTs prior to preparing the CNT solution or dispersion. Any type of doping may be performed. For example, an iodine vapor doping, an HNO3 vapor doping an SOCh vapor doping, and/or an MoOs vapor doping may be performed. The doping and/or addition of components to the dispersion or solution may be performed for any reason. In one or more embodiments, the doping and/or addition of components to the dispersion or solution is performed to lower the resistance of the CNTs.
[0064] The execution of Step 702 depends on the requirements of the atmospheric plasma deposition process of Step 704. Specifically, the specification of the dispersion or solution depends on the atmospheric plasma deposition process requirements and may be optimized to obtain the desired result when performing the atmospheric plasma deposition. Also, Step 702 may be performed in an entirely different manner, for example in configurations of the plasma deposition process that allow introduction of the CNTs in powdered solid form, rather than requiring them in liquid form.
[0065] In Step 704, the substrate, e.g., the piezoelectric film, is coated using an atmospheric plasma deposition process. The atmospheric plasma deposition process may involve driving an electrode with a high voltage causing an electrical arc discharge and subjecting the electrode to a gas stream. The electrical arc discharge is carried by the turbulent flow of the gas stream. A reactive plasma of the gas is formed at a relatively low temperature and atmospheric pressure. The gas may include nitrogen, noble gases (e.g., argon), or mixtures thereof. The resulting gas plasma stream may pick up and carry metal particles sputtered from the electrode and ensure that a high conductivity of the metal particles is maintained. Alternatively, the gas may be an oxidizing gas, e.g., including oxygen or air, which may result in the development of an oxide layer on the metal particles. In one or more embodiments, the CNTs, prepared in Step 702, are introduced in the gas plasma stream, where they come in contact with the metal particles in presence of the plasma. The resulting composite particles may be directly deposited on the substrate through a nozzle. In one or more embodiments, an electrode material that does not release or releases only few metal particles is used. Accordingly, the plasma without metal particles may be responsible for the activation of the CNTs. Fine resolution features may be produced on the substrate, depending on nozzle diameter. Electrode patterns may, thus, be printed on the substrate, by moving the substrate relative to the nozzle of the atmospheric plasma deposition apparatus.
[0066] Step 704 may be performed for one side of the piezoelectric film, or for both sides.
[0067] In Step 706, the carbon nanotube coating is cured. Any type of curing method that is not detrimental to the piezoelectric film may be used. For example, if a curing under elevated temperature is performed, the temperature is kept under the Curie temperature of the piezoelectric material of the piezoelectric film. For example, a curing at room temperature or at a slightly elevated temperature, e.g., at 60-70°C may be performed.
[0068] Additional steps may be performed without departing from the disclosure. For example, upon completion of the curing of the CNT coating, an electrical interface to the electrode(s) in the electrode layer(s) may be established. The electrical interface may include contact pads on the surface of the electrode layer(s). Further, assembly operations may be performed to integrate the piezoelectric device with other components. The assembly operations may include steps such as gluing or otherwise attaching additional layers to the piezoelectric device.
[0069] The manufacturing of a piezoelectric device in accordance with embodiments of the disclosure may have various benefits. In particular, the piezoelectric material of the piezoelectric film may maintain its piezoelectricity, because an atmospheric pressure plasma coating process is used. Accordingly, unlike in other processes such as physical vapor deposition (PVD) used for the deposition of tin doped iridium (ITO), no significant heat is applied. One particular advantage of the atmospheric pressure plasma coating process is that the adhesiveness between the piezoelectric film and the electrodes is relatively higher, compared to other coating processes. The adhesiveness resulting from other coating processes may be limited because piezoelectric film and CNTs are known to be highly inert, and are attracted to each other mostly by weak van der Waals forces. While one may improve adhesiveness by additional treatments such as plasma treatment, chemical etching, mechanical abrasion, etc., this results in an extra manufacturing step and cost. In contrast, because atmospheric plasma coating has the capability to activate the piezoelectric film surface and the electrode materials, adhesiveness is improved, without requiring an extra step. Further, heat damage to the substrate can be avoided due to the relatively low temperature of the plasma. The process can be adjusted for different coating materials. For example, the CNTs (or other materials) may be provided in solid form or in a dispersion. Also, atmospheric plasma deposition may be used for “printing” complex patterns such as patterned electrodes, e.g., as shown in FIGs. 6A and 6B. In addition, the atmospheric pressure plasma coating process is cost effective in comparison to a PVD process and may be used to directly produce many different types of electrode patterns. A high level of transparency of the electrodes is achievable using the CNT-based electrodes. An additional advantage may be that, unlike ITO films which are known to be rigid and brittle, CNT-based electrodes may have a high level of flexibility and durability. Further, CNT-based electrodes are known to be environmentally stable, thereby reducing the cost to meet environmental standards.
[0070] The following example of a piezoelectric device in accordance with embodiments of the disclosure provides performance characteristics. Embodiments of the disclosure are not limited to this example.
[0071] In one embodiment, the piezoelectric film has certain characteristics. For example, the sensitivity (expressed as an electric charge in response to a force being applied, i.e. a piezoelectric coefficient, dai or das) may be greater than lOpC/N or greater than 20pC/N. A fluorinated polymer with high dai may be obtained using different methods: Copolymer/terpolymer or mixed polymers with higher piezoelectric effect may be used; strong polarization treatment may be used; the drawing ratio may be increased; a nucleating agent may be added to increase the amount of beta-crystals, etc. Also, the piezoelectric film may have any thickness, e.g., in a range of 10-200pm. The optical transmittance of the piezoelectric film may be at least 90% or at least 95%. The optical haze optical transmittance of the piezoelectric film may be less than 10% or less than < 5%.
[0072] In one embodiment, a CNT-based electrode has certain characteristics. For example, in order to obtain an increased signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the sheet resistance across the CNT-based electrode layer may be kept low. The sheet resistance may be less than 300 ohm/sq., less than 100 ohm/sq. or less than 50 ohm/sq. The optical transmittance of the CNT-based electrode layer may be at least 80%, at least 90%, or at least 95%. The optical haze of the CNT-based electrode layer may be less than 10% or less than < 5%.
[0073] In one embodiment, the piezoelectric device has certain characteristics. The optical transmittance of the piezoelectric device may be at least 70%, at least 80%, or at least 90%. The optical haze of the piezoelectric device may be less than 10% or less than < 5%. For this instance, the optical transmittance and the optical haze may be measured between the surface of the piezoelectric film opposite to the electrode layer and the surface of the electrode layer opposite to the piezoelectric film.
[0074] Although only a few example embodiments have been described in detail above, those skilled in the art will readily appreciate that many modifications are possible in the example embodiments without materially departing from this invention. Accordingly, all such modifications are intended to be included within the scope of this disclosure as defined in the following claims.

Claims

What is claimed:
1. A piezoelectric device, comprising: a piezoelectric film; and a first conductive electrode layer directly disposed on at least one side of the piezoelectric film, wherein a percentage of flaking of the first conductive electrode layer in a tape test for measuring adhesiveness is less than 65%.
2. The piezoelectric device of claim 1, wherein the piezoelectric device has an optical transmittance of at least 80%.
3. The piezoelectric device of claim 1, wherein the piezoelectric device has an optical haze of less than 5%.
4. The piezoelectric device of claim 1, wherein the first conductive electrode layer comprises at least one selected from a group consisting of carbon-nanotubes (CNTs), metal nanowires, metal mesh, graphene, and conductive polymer.
5. The piezoelectric device of claim 1, wherein the piezoelectric film comprises a fluorinated polymer.
6. The piezoelectric device of claim 5, wherein the fluorinated polymer comprises at least one selected from a group consisting of a poly vinylidene fluoride (PVDF) homopolymer, a poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE) copolymer), a poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorofluoroethylene) (P(VDF-CFE) copolymer), a poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-chlorotrifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-CTFE) co-polymer), a poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (P(VDF-HFP) co-polymer), a poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-tetrafluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TFE) copolymers), a P(VDF-TrFE-CFE) ter-polymer, and a P(VDF-TrFE-CTFE) ter- polymer, a P(VDF-TFE-HFP) ter-polymer, a P(VDF-TFE-CTFE) ter-polymers, and a P(VDF-TFE-CFE) ter-polymer. The piezoelectric device of claim 1, wherein the piezoelectric film is one selected from a group consisting of a polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) piezoelectric film, a PVDF copolymer film, a polylactic acid piezo-biopolymer film, a polyurea film, a polyurethane film, a polyamide film, a polyacrylonitrile film, a polyimide, and a polypropylene film. The piezoelectric device of claim 1, wherein the piezoelectric film has an optical transmittance of at least 90%. The piezoelectric device of claim 1, wherein the piezoelectric film has an optical haze of less than 5%. The piezoelectric device of claim 1, wherein the piezoelectric film has a piezoelectric coefficient, dsi, of at least lOpC/N. The piezoelectric device of claim 1, wherein the piezoelectric film has a piezoelectric coefficient, d33, of at least lOpC/N. The piezoelectric device of claim 1, wherein the first conductive electrode layer is doped with at least one selected from a group consisting of iodine, HNOs, SOO and MoO The piezoelectric device of claim 1, wherein the first conductive electrode layer has an optical transmittance of at least 80%. The piezoelectric device of claim 1, wherein the first conductive electrode layer has an optical haze of less than 10%.
15. The piezoelectric device of claim 1, wherein the first conductive electrode layer has a sheet resistance of less than 300 ohm/sq. The piezoelectric device of claim 1, wherein the piezoelectric device is one selected from a group consisting of sensing device, an energy harvesting device, and an actuator. The piezoelectric device of claim 1, further comprising a second conductive electrode layer directly disposed on the piezoelectric film.
A method of manufacturing a piezoelectric device, the method comprising: coating a piezoelectric film using an atmospheric plasma deposition process to obtain a conductive electrode layer directly disposed on the piezoelectric film. The method of claim 18, further comprising curing the conductive electrode layer. The method of claim 19, wherein the curing comprises exposing the conductive electrode layer to a temperature of no more than a Curie temperature of the piezoelectric film. The method of claim 18, wherein the conductive electrode layer comprises carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The method of claim 21, further comprising: obtaining a CNT dispersion, and wherein the CNT dispersion is introduced in the atmospheric plasma deposition process. The method of claim 22, wherein obtaining the CNT dispersion comprises doping the CNT dispersion with at least one selected from a group consisting of iodine, HNOs, SOCL , and MoOs. The method of claim 21, further comprising: obtaining a CNT powder, and wherein the CNT powder is introduced in the atmospheric plasma deposition process. The method of claim 18, wherein the coating of the piezoelectric film to obtain the conductive electrode layer comprises printing an electrode pattern using the atmospheric plasma deposition process. The method of claim 18, wherein the conductive electrode layer comprises at least one selected from a group consisting of metal nanowires, a metal mesh, a conductive polymer, and graphene.
