Definitions
- Knee brace for supporting a knee joint
- the invention relates to a knee brace for supporting a knee joint, comprising: an upper cuff for coupling with an upper leg, a lower cuff for coupling to a lower leg, wherein the cuffs each comprise a front part to be placed against the front of the user's leg during use, as well as two side parts located next to the user's knee during use, a hinge construction via which the two cuffs are connected to each other, wherein the hinge construction comprises a lateral hinge part which during use is present on the lateral side of the knee joint, as well as a medial hinge part, which during use is present on the medial side of the knee joint, which hinge parts each comprise two connecting elements, each of which are connected with one end via a hinge pin to the upper cuff and are connected at the other end via a further hinge pin to the lower cuff, one of the connecting elements of each hinge part is present on the side of the cuffs facing the knee during use and the other connecting element is present on the side of the cuffs facing away
- Such a knee brace is known from EP 2 787 937 A.
- This known knee brace supports the knee joint and ensures that the knee joint is favorably loaded during bending.
- the connecting elements are pivotally connected at their ends to components which are attached to the cuffs.
- An object of the invention is to provide a knee brace of the type described in the preamble which properly supports the knee joint during bending and thereby follows the natural movement of the knee joint.
- the knee brace according to the invention is characterized in that the two connecting elements of each hinge part cross each other.
- An embodiment of the knee brace according to the invention is characterized in that the cuffs each consist of one plastic whole and the hinge pins and the further hinge pins protrude through holes in the cuffs.
- the cuffs are preferably manufactured by means of 3D printing and can therefore be custom made for each person.
- a further embodiment of the knee brace according to the invention is characterized in that at least one of the hinge pins and of the further hinge pins being in a plastic insert, which insert being in one of the cuffs or being in a coupling part that is connected to one of the cuffs, and which insert has an elasticity greater than that of the respective cuff (that is, the material of the insert has a modulus of elasticity less than that of the material of the respective cuff), to allow slight twisting of the lower and upper cuff (and therefore of the lower leg and upper leg) relative to each other around the longitudinal (vertical) and sagittal (the front to back) axis through the knee joint.
- the knee brace offers support in those directions of movement of the knee where support is desired and flexibility in those directions of movement in which flexibility is desired.
- the hinge pins can with one end be attached to the connecting elements or protrude through holes in the connecting elements.
- each hinge pin and further hinge pin connecting one of the connecting elements to the cuffs is present in a plastic insert, which is arranged in the relevant cuff to even better allow a slight rotation of the lower and upper cuff relative to each other around the longitudinal axis and sagittal axis through the knee joint.
- the lower leg can rotate about the vertical axis relative to the upper leg.
- some elasticity has been added to the hinge construction of the knee brace.
- X-legs and bow-legs there will be a slight rotation about the sagittal axis by the knee joint. Due to the extra elasticity present in the hinge construction of the knee brace according to the invention, this slight rotation is more easily possible, so that wearing the knee brace according to the invention is more pleasant than wearing the known knee brace.
- each connecting element both the hinge pin and the further hinge pin are present in plastic inserts in order to even better allow said slight rotation.
- the insert is preferably a plastic bush with a wall thickness of at least 1 mm, preferably at least 2 mm. Furthermore, for this purpose the modulus of elasticity of the material of the insert is a maximum of 3000 Nm- .
- the knee brace according to the invention preferably has an intermediate piece on either side of the knee between the side parts of the cuffs, which piece is pivotally connected to one of the connecting elements with the end being the furthest from the front part of the knee.
- one of the connecting elements of each hinge part is preferably longer than the other connecting element.
- the longest connecting element is present on the side of the cuffs remote from the knee.
- the intermediate piece of each hinge part is preferably connected to the longest connecting element. As a result, the intermediate piece supports the knee better during bending than if the intermediate piece is hingedly connected to the shortest connecting element.
- the distance between the hinge pin connecting the shortest connecting element to the upper cuff and the hinge pin connecting the longest connecting element to the lower cuff is between 53 and 54.5 mm, preferably 53.7 mm. Furthermore, for this purpose the distance between the hinge pin connecting the longest connecting element to the upper cuff and the hinge pin connecting the shortest connecting element to the lower cuff is between 35 and 37 mm, preferably 36 mm.
- the distance between the hinge pins that connect the connecting elements to the upper cuff is between 14 and 16 mm, preferably 15 mm.
- the distance between the hinge pins connecting the connecting elements to the lower cuff is between 16 and 18 mm, preferably 17 mm.
- the distance in vertical direction between the hinge pins connecting the connecting elements to the upper cuff is preferably between 2 and 3 mm, preferably 2.6 mm, again to optimally follow the movement of the knee during bending.

- Figure 7 a second embodiment of a knee brace according to the invention applied to one leg in side view;
- FIG 8 the hinge construction of the knee brace shown in figure 7, seen on the side facing away from the knee;
- Figure 9 a section along line IX-IX of the hinge construction shown in figure 8 .
- FIG. 1 shows a first embodiment of the knee brace 1 according to the invention present on a user's leg in side view.
- the knee brace 1 has a hinge construction 3 which ensures that the knee brace 1 supports the movement of a knee joint 101 as good as possible, with no forces being exerted on the knee joint 101.
- the knee brace 1 has an upper cuff 5 secured to an upper leg 103 of the user and a lower cuff 7 secured to a lower leg 105 of the user.
- the cuffs each have a front part 5 A and 7 A which is positioned against the front of the user's leg during use and two side parts 5B and 7B which are placed next to the user's knee during use.
- the side parts 5B and 7B of the cuffs 5 and 7 are mutually connected via the hinge construction 3.
- the hinge construction 3 has a lateral hinge part 3 A (see figure 2, which schematically shows the knee brace on the leg), which is present on the lateral side of the knee joint 101 during use, as well as a medial hinge part 3B, which is present on the medial side of the knee joint 101 during use.
- Each cuff 5 and 7 has a coupling part 9 and 11, respectively, via which the cuffs are hingedly connected to each other.
- These coupling parts 9 and 11 are mutually connected via two connecting elements 13 and 15.
- these connecting elements are formed by metal strips.
- the knee brace can also be designed without coupling parts. In that case, the cuffs are connected directly to each other via the connecting elements, as described later in the second embodiment.
- FIGS 3 and 5 the hinged connection between the two coupling parts 9 and 11 is shown enlarged in two side views.
- the hinged connection is shown in section along line IV-IV and VI- VI respectively.
- Each connecting element 13, 15 is connected at one end via a hinge pin 17, 21 to the coupling part 9 of the upper cuff 5 and via a further hinge pin 19, 23 to the coupling part 11 of the lower cuff 7.
- the hinge pins 17, 19, 21, 23 protrude through holes present in the connecting elements 13 and 15 and in the coupling parts 9 and 11.
- Plastic inserts 25 are present between the hinge pins 17, 19, 21, 23 and the coupling parts 9 and 11. These plastic inserts 25 have an elasticity that is greater than that of the relevant coupling part 9, 11 of the cuff 5, 7 to allow slight rotation (indicated by arrows 111 and 113) of the lower and upper cuff 5, 7 (and thus of the lower leg and upper leg) relative to each other around the longitudinal axis 107 and sagittal axis 109 through the knee joint 101.
- the inserts 25 are formed by plastic bushings with a wall thickness of a few millimeters, for instance 2 mm, and an elastic modulus of a maximum of 3000 N/m 2 .
- FIG. 7 shows a second embodiment of the knee brace according to the invention present on a user's leg in side view. All parts identical to those of the first embodiment described above are designated by the same reference numerals.
- the hinge pins 17-23 are arranged directly in the cuffs 5 and 7 and are not connected to the cuffs via coupling parts.
- FIG 8 the hinged connection between the two cuffs 5 and 7 is shown enlarged in side view and in figure 9 the hinged connection is shown in section along line IX-IX in figure 8.
- the intermediate piece 10 is near the end 10a being the furthest from the front parts 5A and 7A of the cuffs 5 and 7, hingedly connected to the longest connecting element 15 which is also present on the side remote from the knee of the side parts 5B and 7B of the cuffs 5 and 7.
- the hinge construction is optimized to provide maximum support to the knee without restricting the natural movement of the joint. This has resulted in an optimal geometry of the hinge construction, which is described below.
- the distance dl between the hinge pin 17, which connects the shortest connecting element 13 to the upper cuff 5, and the hinge pin 23, which connects the longest connecting element 15 to the lower cuff 7, is between 53 and 54.5 mm and preferably equal to 53.7 mm.
- the distance d2 between the hinge pin 21, which connects the longest connecting element 15 to the upper cuff 5, and the hinge pin 19, which connects the shortest connecting element 13 to the lower cuff 7, is between 35 and 37 mm and is preferably equal to 36 mm.
- the distance d3 between the hinge pins 17 and 21 connecting the connecting elements 13 and 15 to the side part 5B of the upper cuff is between 14 and 16 mm and preferably equal to 15 mm.
- the distance d4 between the hinge pins 19 and 23 connecting the connecting elements 13 and 15 to the lower cuff 7 is between 16 and 18 mm and is preferably equal to 17 mm.
- the distance d5 in vertical direction between the hinge pins 17 and 21 connecting the connecting elements 13 and 15 to the side part 5B of the upper cuff 5 is between 2 and 3 mm and preferably equal to 2.6 mm.
