Abstract
Disclosed are probiotic compositions and related methods for detoxification of the recreational drug gamma-hydroxybutyric acid (GHB). In some aspects, provided herein is a recombinant bacterium comprising a nucleic acid comprising at least one nucleotide sequence encoding a GHB dehydrogenase (GHBDH) and at least one nucleotide sequence encoding a succinate-semialdehyde dehydrogenase (SSADH). In some embodiments, the recombinant bacterium is non-pathogenic. In some embodiments, the recombinant bacterium is a food-grade bacterium. In some embodiments, the recombinant bacterium is Bacillus subtilis, e.g., Bacillus subtilis strain PY79. In some embodiments, the GHB dehydrogenase (GHBDH) is derived from the bacterium. In some embodiments, the succinate-semialdehyde dehydrogenase (SSADH) is derived from the bacterium Agrobacterium tumefaciens C58.
