Definitions
- the invention disclosed herein generally relates to coconut shredders and graters and more particularly pertains to a portable coconut shredding/grating apparatus for allowing a user to shred and grate a coconut.
- coconut scrapers/graters have been used principally for scraping of coconuts.
- coconuts are held by hand and placed towards a rotating blade to finely cut coconut meat from within the coconut shell.
- the coconut must be positioned at different angles against the rotating blade by holding strongly by hand. This process is called coconut scraping or coconut grating.
- Existing coconut scraping devices have many safety issues, for example, there are chances of getting hand injuries due to slippages while holding a coconut firmly towards the rotating blade causing a user to injure his/her hand.
- Existing solutions to prevent this problem include the provision of blunt blades or reducing the sharpness of the blades. However, this is counterproductive, since scraping is made more difficult because more effort is needed.
- Another drawback in existing coconut scraper designs involves the inability to use a coconut clamping device in combination with the scraping apparatus since the blade rotates in a stationary unit and the coconut is moved with respect to it. Moreover, using this method during coconut scraping, some of the coconut scrapings get scattered away by the rotating blade. These coconut scrapings may get contaminated and therefore cannot be used further for cooking purposes. Furthermore, the blades are difficult to remove for washing and may require qualified personnel to dismantle the blade thereby making the device more difficult to use.
- the coconut shredding/grating apparatus addresses the above-mentioned need for an improved coconut shredding/grating apparatus with unique method for scraping coconut and unique way for collecting grated coconut scrapings from blade to avoid scattering of coconut scrapings and to collect in a bag or bowl.
- the mentioned coconut shredding/grating apparatus is a hand-held unit designed to work in combination with a coconut clamping device or coconut holder for easy working. Cutters in the blade can be sharpened to reduce the effort and to increase speed of scraping when working with a coconut holder or coconut clamp. This avoids the need to hold a coconut by hand thereby eliminating the risk of hand injury. During operation, the coconut is broken into two halves and one half held in the coconut clamp.
- the coconut shredding/grating apparatus is held firmly on the handle with specially designed cutter blade inserted.
- a bowl or a plastic bag is removably coupled to the coconut shredding/grating apparatus to collect coconut scrapings.
- scrapings or shavings are collected inside the cutter blade through the apertures thereby avoiding scattering of coconut scrapings/shavings.
- the coconut shredding/grating apparatus comprises a blade assembly having a blade head and a hollow base portion.
- the blade head comprises a plurality of apertures configured on an outer surface of the blade head, wherein each of the apertures includes a cutter blade disposed in an interior space proximal an inner surface of the blade head, and wherein a portion of each of the cutter blades are exposed outwards.
- a first coupling element is positioned downstream of the blade head between the blade head and a first hollow tubular section. The first hollow tubular section extends from the blade head such that the first hollow tubular section is in fluid communication with the blade head.
- a hollow base portion includes a second hollow tubular section configured to receive the first hollow tubular section.
- a second coupling element is configured to couple the hollow base portion with the first coupling element of the blade head.
- a gear element is mounted on the second hollow tubular section for engaging with a speed regulating assembly operably engaged to a motor shaft of a drive motor to generate a regulated rotary motion of the blade assembly.
- a receptacle is removably coupled to the second hollow tubular section and a control assembly for energizing and operating the drive motor regulates power supplied to the drive motor.
