Definitions
- the invention relates to a carrying holder for lifting and positioning a window air conditioning unit along vertical and horizontal directions.
- a window air conditioner is a single air conditioning, AC, unit with all parts and components contained inside one housing or casing. This type of air conditioner is installed into a window opening, placed on a windowsill of the window. Commonly, a centre of gravity, CG, of the AC unit is located towards an outdoor portion of the AC unit. User controls and/or user interface are arranged on an indoor portion of the unit. The position of the CG and a window sash abutting against the AC unit ensure a secure positioning of the AC unit in a relevant window.
- the traditional shape of a window AC unit is box-shaped with smooth sides. It is a heavy unit which may be complicated to lift and position in a window. Many existing AC units lack lifting arrangements, such as handles. A user is expected to lift the AC unit by gripping the sides of the unit. Due to asymmetrical weight distribution inside the unit and its physical weight, it is a difficult and ergonomically challenging process to lift the unit vertically from the ground, and then horizontally when placing it on a windowsill.
- US 2014/000061 discloses a handled appliance support for a window-mounted air conditioner unit, comprising a pair of U-shaped handles forming a pair of U-shaped grips for a user to grasp and support the unit from within an interior side of a window opening.
- a pair of grips is attached to a window mounted AC unit via adjustable appliance straps.
- the straps are transversely mounted around the appliance such that the strap length spans the width and sides of the unit and such that the grips extend laterally from the AC unit.
- a carrying holder for a window air conditioning unit overcoming, or at least alleviating, at least some of the above-mentioned drawbacks.
- a carrying holder for lifting and positioning a window air conditioning unit having the features defined in the independent claim is provided.
- a carrying holder for lifting and positioning a window air conditioning unit along vertical and horizontal directions with the window air conditioning unit oriented in its ordinary operating position.
- the carrying holder comprises a handle portion and a positioning portion.
- the handle portion is provided with an elongated opening for receiving therein a hand of a carrying person.
- the positioning portion is configured to engage with the window air conditioning unit and to fix the carrying holder in a rotational direction in relation to the window air conditioning unit.
- the elongated opening has a slanted direction in relation to the vertical direction when the carrying holder is engaged with the window air conditioning unit oriented in its ordinary operating position.
- the handle portion is provided the elongated opening having the slanted direction in relation to the vertical direction and since the positioning portion is configured to engage with the window air conditioning unit and to fix the carrying holder in a rotational direction, the carrying holder when engaged with a window air conditioning unit provides for the carrying person to grasp the handle portion with his or her wrist in an at least partially ergonomically correct position, both while lifting the window air conditioning unit vertically and while positioning the window air conditioning unit in a relevant window in a horizontal direction.
- air conditioning unit air conditioner unit, air conditioner, and AC unit are used interchangeably and relate to a unit utilised for conditioning an indoor climate, typically for cooling a room, part of a building, and/or a small building.
- the window AC unit is configured for being position on a windowsill of a window. One portion of the AC unit extends out of the window. A portion of the window, such as a window sash abuts against the AC unit contributing to securing the AC unit in the window and optionally, to seal against the AC unit. Accordingly, the AC unit may have dimensions to fit in a window of a building. Mentioned purely as example, a window AC unit may have height/width/depth within ranges of 25 - 50 cm / 35 - 70 cm / 35 - 70 cm and may weigh within a range of 15 - 45 kg.
- the window AC unit may also be referred to AC unit, air conditioning unit, air conditioner unit, or air conditioner.
- the term “oriented in its ordinary operating position” relates to that orientation which the AC unit has, when positioned in a window and put to use for air conditioning.
- the AC unit may have the same orientation in the three dimension when it is placed on e.g., a floor or other surface and when being transported, optionally in packaging material such as a box.
- the carrying holder may form a separate part i.e., a part which is separate from the AC unit. Accordingly, the carrying holder may be engaged with the AC unit in order to lift and position the AC unit, whereafter the carrying holder is disengaged from the AC unit.
- the carrying holder may be utilised for lifting and positioning the AC unit in a relevant window and also for lifting and removing the AC unit from the window.
- the herein mentioned carrying person may be service personnel installing or servicing the AC unit, a user of the AC unit, or any other person handling the AC unit.
- the handle portion is configured for grasping by the carrying person.
- the carrying person positions part of his or her hand, such as the fingers, in the elongated opening.

- the edge may be formed by a body of the handle portion at the elongated opening.
- the elongated opening is not limited to any particular shape.
- the elongated opening may have a straight shape or a curved shape or an angled shape.
- the slanted direction of the elongated opening in relation to the vertical direction provides for grasping of the carrying holder with a wrist of the carrying person in a comparatively straight position when the carrying holder is engaged with a relevant AC unit and the carrying person is positioned beside the AC unit with his or her arm in front of his or her body.
- An ergonomic position of the wrist is thus, ensured in comparison with a handle portion providing a vertically extending grip (as in in the handled appliance support of US 2014/000061) or a horizontally extending grip.
- the positioning portion is configured to engage with the window air conditioning unit and to fix the carrying holder in a rotational direction in relation to the AC unit
- the slanted direction of the elongated opening in relation to the vertical direction is also provided as a slanted direction in relation to the AC unit when it is oriented in its ordinary operating position.
- Engagement of the positioning portion of the carrying holder with the AC unit may for instance be achieved by the carrying holder extending partially around the AC unit, such as underneath the AC unit and/or by interlocking with a housing of the AC unit e.g., in openings of the housing.
- the carrying holder may be provided in a set of two separate carrying holders, wherein each of the two carrying holders is devised for attachment to opposite lateral sides of a relevant AC unit.
- the elongated opening may extend at two slanted directions in relation to the vertical direction, a first portion of the elongated opening may extend at an angle within a range of 10 - 20 degrees to the vertical direction and a second portion of the elongated opening may extend at an angle within a range of 55 - 65 degrees to the vertical direction.
- the first portion of the elongated opening may be grasped when the AC unit is to be positioned in a horizontal direction and the second portion of the elongated opening may be grasped when the AC unit is to be lifted in a vertical direction.
- the carrying holder may be removable from the window air conditioning unit. In this manner, the carrying holder may be utilised when the AC unit is to be lifted and positioned e.g., in a window and thereafter the carrying holder may be removed from the AC unit.
- the carrying holder may be non-integrated in a housing of the window air conditioning unit. In this manner, the carrying holder may be provided as a member separate from the AC unit.
