Definitions
- the present invention relates to the field of packaging. More specifically, the present invention is packaging for the presentation of a card, such as a credit card, a gift card, or a sports card.
- a card such as a credit card, a gift card, or a sports card.
- a card such as a gift card or voucher
- the gift information is printed upon a card or tab which is pulled out of a housing in a first direction to reveal the gift information.
- the housing may also incorporate a video display, which emerges from the housing in a second, opposite direction at the same time as the gift card tab is being pulled out.
- packaging for a card comprising: a sleeve defining a through passage; a sliding mechanism located in the passage; and a tray member and a planar mount each located in said passage and attached to said sliding mechanism, such that when said mount is moved out of said passage in a first direction said tray member moves out of said passage in a second direction opposite to said first direction; wherein the mount has a proximal end and a distal end, the proximal end including a tongue defining a gap between the tongue and the mount, and the distal end including a raised rib, the tongue and rib securing the card on the mount.
- the card is typically a card such as a credit card, a gift card, or a sports card.
- the sports card may be a collectable sports card, as commonly collected by children or young adults.
- a “credit or gift card” is any card of standard credit card dimensions, and non-limiting additional examples include store cards, loyalty cards and bank cards.
- the tongue may be resilient.
- the raised rib may double as a tab for moving the mount in and out of the passage.
- the distal end of the mount may further include a tab for moving the mount in and out of the passage.
- the sleeve may comprise upper and lower panels, and at least the upper panel may be provided with a cut-out portion or recess on a first side thereof to permit access to the mount.
- the tray member has a proximal end which may have a cut-out portion or recess which is flush with the cut-out portion or recess on the first side of the upper panel when the tray member is fully located in the passage.

- Figures 3 and 4 are perspective views of the gift card unit of Figure 1 in the closed and open positions, illustrating internal components of the unit;
- Figure 5 is a side view of the gift card unit of Figure 1 , illustrating internal components of the unit;
- Figure 6 is a perspective view of a gift card mount used in the unit of Figure 1 ;
- Figures 7 and 8 are side views of the gift card mount of Figure 6, with and without a gift card mounted thereon.
- FIG. 1-5 A preferred embodiment of packaging for a gift or credit card is shown in Figures 1-5.
- the packaging is hereafter referred to as a gift card unit, generally designated 1.
- Figures 1 and 3 show the gift card unit 1 in a closed position.
- Figures 2, 4 and 5 show the gift card unit 1 in an open position.
- the gift card unit 1 shown in these figures comprises a sliding mechanism 4, which is hidden within an outer sleeve 2 which defines a passage.
- the sliding mechanism 4 may be as disclosed in WO 00/38999, comprising a planar divider extending across said passage, and a belt member extending around said divider. This mechanism will be described in more detail below.
- the outer sleeve 2 encases the sliding mechanism 4, a tray member which in the illustrated example comprises a battery-powered portable video display screen 6, and a planar mount 8 for a gift or credit card.
- An upper portion of the outer sleeve 2 may comprise a recess 3, or other feature to allow the mount 8 to be gripped by hand when it is positioned within the outer sleeve 2 as in Figures 1 and 3.
- the mount 8 comprises a rib 10, which is raised above the planar surface of the mount 8.
- the rib 10 lies within the recess 3 or else it may protrude from the outer sleeve 2 such that it act as a tab to be held by the user. Alternatively, there may be a separate rib and tab elements on the mount.
- the gift card unit 1 may be shipped to the recipient in the closed position shown in Figures 1 and 3.
- the outer sleeve 2 may comprise the retail outlet logo or branding for example.
- a gift or credit card 20 lies upon the mount 8, such that when the unit 1 is in the closed position the gift card 20 is hidden from view.
- the recipient of the gift card unit 1 can pull the mount 8 from within the outer sleeve 2 so as to expose the gift card 20.
- the gift card 20 and/or mount 8 may comprise the retail outlet logo or branding, or a printed message for the recipient.
- the sliding mechanism 4 links the mount 8 to the portable video display screen 6 such that pulling the mount 8 out of the sleeve 2 will concurrently slide the portable video display screen 6 out from the opposite end of the sleeve 2 and reveal it to the recipient.
- the gift card unit 1 may comprise a magnetic switch 30.
- the magnetic switch 30 can be arranged such that it will activate when the portable video display screen 6 is revealed to the user from within the sleeve 2. This opening of the magnetic switch can be used to trigger activation of the portable video display screen 6, to turn it on and allow it to start displaying the balance of the digital gift card account and/or playing one or more video files. Similarly, sliding the portable video display screen 6 back into the outer sleeve 2 will connect the contacts of the magnetic switch 30, closing the switch and thus turning off the portable video display screen to preserve its battery (not shown).
- the user will therefore easily be able to stop the display of the balance of the digital gift card account and the display of the video file(s), simply by sliding the portable video display screen back into the outer sleeve 2.
- the user can push the mount 8 back into the outer sleeve 2, and this will cause the portable video display screen to also move back into the outer sleeve 2.
- the gift card unit 1 includes a memory, processor, and battery. It may optionally include a speaker in addition.
- FIGs 2, 4 and 5 the portable video display screen 6 is visible, and it can be seen that a pair of contacts 30A,30B forming part of the magnetic switch 30 are a distance apart from one another.
- a recess 7 can also be provided in the portable video display screen 6. This recess 7 aligns with the recess 3 of the outer sleeve 2 when the unit 1 is closed to aid hand operation of the mount 8, as it allows a finger to be placed behind the mount 8 so that it can be pulled from within the outer sleeve 2.
- the sliding mechanism 4 may comprise any arrangement that allows the mount 8 and portable video display screen 6 to be linked such that the user pushing or pulling one of them will cause the other to move in to or out of the outer sleeve 2.
- the sliding mechanism 4 shown in Figure 5 uses a dividing card member 40 in the centre, wrapped in a band 42 which can move around the dividing card 40 and transfer the motion in one direction to the opposite direction on the opposite side of the dividing card 40.
- the portable video display screen 6 and the mount 8 abut the band such that the band grips and moves them in to or out of the outer sleeve 2 when it moves.
- the screen and mount may be attached to the band.
- the magnetic switch 30 cannot be seen from the outside of the gift card unit 1. Using a magnetic switch means that it can be hidden within the portable video display screen 6.
- the card mount 8 is shown in more detail in Figures 6 to 8. It may be formed from card or alternatively from a plastics material.
- the raised tab 10 is located at a first, distal end 8A of the mount 8.
- a tongue member 12 which is preferably integrally formed with the second end 8B of the mount 8.
- the tongue member 12 is folded back on top of the mount 8 such that a gap or slot 14 is defined between the tongue 12 and mount 8.
- a free end of the tongue may contact an upper surface of the mount 8, or lie close to that upper surface, when at rest.
- the tongue may be resilient wherein the free end can be pushed away from the upper surface but will then move back towards the upper surface when the force pushing it away is removed.
- a free end of the tongue may have a tongue recess 13 which has the same shape and dimensions as the recess 3 in the outer sleeve 2.
- FIGS 6 and 8 show the mount 8 with a gift card 20 located thereon.
- the mount 8 is in the open (i.e. extended) position.
- a first end of the gift card 20 is inserted into the gap 14 between the mount 8 and the tongue 12.
- the tongue 12 is resilient the card 20 will push at least the free end of the tongue 12 upwards as it is inserted and once the card 20 is in place on the mount 8 that free end will press down on the card 20 holding it in place upon the mount 8.
- the tongue 12 prevents a card 20 from being inserted beyond the proximal end of the mount 8 into the sleeve 2.
- the mount 8 is sized such that a longitudinal distance between the second end 8B of the mount and an inner edge 9 of the tab 10 is substantially the same as that of a credit or gift card, that is 85.6mm.
- the mount 8 has a width which is again substantially identical to that of a credit or gift card, that is 53.98mm.
- the present invention provides packaging for a card, such as gift, bank or credit, or sports card which ensures that the card is not lost or damaged in transit, but which avoids the need to adhere the card to the packaging with glue, tape or any other sticky, messy adhesive.
- Other switch mechanism for the video display may be used instead of a magnetic switch. It may instead be a light sensor on the tray member, for example, which is exposed to light and activates the video display as the tray member leaves the sleeve and deactivates the display when retracted from the light as the tray member re-enters the sleeve.
- the tray member may instead comprise a tray portion which houses an item, such as a gift or a printed document, for example.
- the tray member may be replaced with a second planar mount for a second gift or credit card, wherein the second mount has the same arrangement of features as the first mount. Pulling the first mount from the sleeve would expose the second mount in the same way as it does the tray member of the preferred embodiment described above.
- the preferred embodiment described above has the tray/video screen and mount arranged in a “portrait” orientation. That is, the tray/video screen and mount move in and out of the ends of the sleeve.
- the present invention may also be arranged in a “landscape” orientation, where the tray/video screen and mount move in and out of the longitudinal sides of the sleeve. Unlike in the figures where the tray and mount leave the sleeve in opposing “west” and “east” directions, in the landscape embodiment they leave the sleeve in opposing “north” and “south” directions.
- the card may alternatively be a sports card.
- the cards may be collectable sports cards commonly collected by children or young adults.
