Description
A Set of Interactive Educational Games and Methodology thereof
OMO)
1. Field of the Invention:
This invention relates to methodology and set of interactive educational games for developing learning skills and more particularly to learning colors, geometric shapes, and hand- eye coordination skills
2. Background Art :
In view of the prevalence of technology, which depends mainly on screens such as computers, laptop and smart phones, children nowadays do not use their manual skills in a sufficient way.
Too much screens time for children results in harmful effects. These harmful effects include isolation from the surrounding environment, and the inability to interact well and build social relationships with others, enhance autism traits when used for long periods, Damage to the tendons of the hands, due to the long period of carrying the mobile phone, and impairment of motor skills resulting from not practicing manual activities.
In addition to the harmful effects of using technology by the children at the different stages of life, it has been proven that the lack of using manual skills impedes the development of the centers responsible of those manual skills and affects negatively upon the mental development of children, in particular, minimize the mental creativity of the child.
The fine movements of the hand are crucial for developing the functions of the brain through activating specific areas of the brain. Said areas are not functioned during writing by keyboard and smart phones.
Due to the high distraction and lack of attention caused to the young children by the screens and mobile games, there are now high recommendations to go back to the manual interactive games like games based on Montessori’s approach.
The Montessori Method is an approach to learning which emphasizes active learning, independence, cooperation, and learning in harmony with each child’s unique pace of development.
Said approach focuses on developing the practical life skills, i.e., the main skills pertaining organization and knowledge, wherein Sensory training is the com stone of the intellectual development, therefore said approach includes methods for training the following senses:
Touch sense training: Sensory-motor skills that is considered necessary to train the child's hand, skills, and fingers, for example, unbuttoning and installing buttons, filling beads, operating loosen, and tying the shoelaces of shoes, training the hand to distinguish cold, hot, rough, soft, soft, hard, sizes, colors, shapes, Weights.
Hearing training: Distinguishing between thin and hoarse sounds, between high and low sounds between far and near sounds, and distinguish between different sounds. The child can distinguish all these sounds while he is blindfolded. To develop the sense of hearing, Montessori created what she called silence, in order to accustom the child to silence and listening.
Smell training: while blindfolded, the child distinguishes between different smells, such as tree leaves, ordinary leaves, the smell of burning, and the smell of fresh and musty bread and distinguishes between different smells and perfumes.
Taste training: while blindfolded, the child learns to distinguish between different flavors, for example sour and sweet, and between different types of food.
Reading teaching: Montessori considered that the child leams to write before reading, however, she has not provided a specific approach in this regard.
Educational Montessori means
Dr. Montessori believed in her theory that there is a group of human tendencies that usually determine the leadership behavior of the child at every stage, and that education must respond to those tendencies, and facilitate the process of expressing them, and the most important and clearest of those trends identified by Dr. Montessori:
Self-preservation.
Interacting with the environment
Discovering
Communication
Work” is defined as an act of purposeful activity.
Organization Precision Repetition Abstraction -Mathematical mindset
The Montessori’s method relied on a set of free activities within an environment prepared to suit the basic human characteristics of children of different ages, and the function of the environment here is to allow the child to develop independently according to his internal psychological orientations, and the environment should show the following characteristics:
- Building in proportion to the child and his / her needs.
- Beauty and harmony, cleanliness of the environment.
- Organization.
- Organizing and facilitating movement and activity.
- Reducing surrounding materials, so only materials that support a child's development are included.
There are several educational means and games have been designed dependent upon Montessori’s approach .The early designs of those games are designed by Maria Montessori herself, for example, a patent application no. US 1103369 discloses to didactic material for
instruction of children, and it is particularly designed to adapt their mental and muscular system to express itself in the form of writing. Said didactic material comprises a multiplicity of units each containing as an essential feature a design of relatively large dimensions, the component parts of the design being wider than the ball of a child’s fingertip.
US1173298A, discloses an improvement in educational devices and more particularly to a device by means of which fundamental principles of geometry may be easily and rapidly taught to young pupils. The invention broadly consists of a plate or the like provided with a plurality of recesses of geometrical shapes and a plurality of insets adapted to be placed within each of the recesses to exactly fill the same.
In addition to the games invented by Maria Montessori herself, there are several patterns of games have been invented based on Montessori’s approach, for example the patent application no. US2482227A discloses an educational game comprising a board presenting a top plane surface, there being a plurality of perforations in said surface, said perforations being arranged in divisions, each of the divisions being spaced from each other and comprising parallel rows, each row having an equal number of perforations arranged in aligned relation and equally spaced from each other, a plurality of game pieces, each having a peg for insertion in a perforation of one of the rows and a head, each head bearing indicia symbolic of an educational operation on its top surface, a game piece being mounted upon each of the perforations of one of said rows, the respective game pieces being so selected that the indicia on the heads’ form together an educational operation, and a plurality of arrows equal in number to the perforations in a row of said one division and pointing from the one row of said divisions to the other row thereof.
However, it’s still a difficult challenge to be able to attract the attention of the child to the manual games in the presence of the huge entertainment obtained by the computer games, smart phones, and televisions.
Therefore, there is still a need for creative designs, in different patterns, of manual educational games that can compensate the entertainment of the computer games, in order to avoid the harmful effects of screens on one hand, and on the other, develop the mental, visual, and motor skills of the children in an attractive way for the child.
Disclosure Of The Invention:
Summary of the invention
A principal objective of the present invention is to provide safe and attractive games that work on developing the essential skills and abilities of children at their different stages of life; said games contribute to modifying the negative effects caused by technology to children at the visual, motor and cognitive levels, in addition to improving the skills of concentration and attention.
More particularly, it is an object of the invention to provide means for developing the skills of the children of special needs.
Another important object of the invention is to provide methodology for the visual- motor-cognitive integration necessary for the educational process because of its effectiveness in training students with special needs in the fields: [visual - sensory - kinesthetic - cognitive - linguistic - innovation - life - social - mathematical - . ], And other areas. As it works to develop the skills of concentration and attention and meets the desired goals in each of the following areas:
1- The field of developing sensory skills (visual).
2- The field of developing motor skills (especially fine movements).
3- The field of developing cognitive skills, thinking skills and creativity.
IMO methodology works on activating the functional areas of the brain that got affected by fine movements performed by hand. Each game of IMO set comprises, as an essential part, a box and colored pieces; wherein the box has colored marks in order to organize the colored pieces each in their designated place.
The first step is discovering the game; i.e. the box and the pieces inside it. Said step comprises:
Recognizing the shape of the box which enrich the visual aspect;
Recognizing the touch of the box which targets the touch skills and knock upon the box to recognize the sound thereof.
Discovering the method of opening the drawer of the box and get the pieces out, which enhance the neuromuscular synergism.
The methodology suggests asking some questions during the stage of discovering the game, like what is it supposed to be?, shake the box to ask what is supposed to be inside?, and what do you think how can we open this box? . then the trainee or the child is left to try and try to discover said game. The trainer can give him a hand just before the trainee loses the hope to open it.
The game is composed of several stages, wherein the first stage is to get out the pieces of the game and being familiar with them, in order to get prepared for the next stages. The methodology suggests some encouraging phrases to be said during the training
The first steps for each game is starting with colors that most familiar to the child, which is usually arranged as follows (red-blue-yellow-green-orange-purple-white-black
but this is not a rule. The color (yellow or pink), for example, may be the most familiar to your child, or the color (pink and baby blue) in The group of light colors, in this case, these colors are used at the beginning of training.
In this stage the child is supposed to match and sort the colors
The triple lesson: 1- Where is the blue? Where's the yellow? Where's the red?
2- 1 want yellow / 1 want red / 1 want blue.
3- What is this? Red / What is this? Yellow / What is this? blue.
The trainee may be able to distinguish and choose the color even though he cannot pronounce it due to a speech problem or memory problem, so that the linguistic aspect does not become an obstacle during training in the case of speech and speech problems or a problem with memory.
So the cognitive sequence of colors is what is followed in the first steps of the game
The idea of the games depends upon different view of Montessori’s methodology; the following table illustrates the advances of the methodology of the present invention over the methodology of Montessori:
