- the invention overcomes problems identified in the prior art by presenting a locking device unit with a padlock/shackle protector (shield element) that locks the whole of a wheel by immobilising at least one but preferably two disc brakes at the same time. This prevents free rotation of the wheel (e.g. a front wheel, but also could be a rear wheel) around its axis by securing brake disc(s) with minimal space between the device and the brake disc thus denying access for cutting tools.

- a lock assembly 10 is comprised of a shield element 11 and an engagement pin 12 that is arranged to extend through an opening 13 in an abutment element 14 for engagement into a blind bore 15 of the shield element 11.
- bore 15 extends into a main body 16, defining walls of bore 15 which accommodate a proximal end 17 of pin 12.
- an opening 18 through proximal end 17 is aligned with an opening 19 through main body 16 and bore 15.
- the mating relationship between proximal end 17 and bore 15 is shown as a rectangular shape but could be any suitable configuration, preferably with only narrow clearance between the engaged surfaces.
- FIG 2 shows a padlock 20 that is compatible with assembly 10 as shown in Figure 3.
- the type of padlock 20 is preferably has a recess in U shape construction with a shackle/shaft 21 extendable across the void 22 between legs of the U and lockable in place by a locking means actuated by a key 23 or equivalent mechanism.
- Shackle 21 is received by a blind bore 24 in an opposite leg of the U shaped padlock from that which it enters.
- the distal end of the shackle is pushed or pulled by the fingers of a user in the known way to engage/lock and disengage/unlock the assembly.
- An alternative form of padlock may feature a shackle that extends in an arc across the void 22 which is actuated by a rotatable driving mechanism. Simple modification to the alignment of openings 18 and 19 can be made to accommodate movement of such a shackle.
- the main body 16 of shield element 11 is configured for engagement into void 22 of padlock 20 that simultaneously receives shackle 21 and the engagement pin 12; shackle 21 extending through aligned openings 18 and 19 on a longitudinal axis A and into bore/recess 24.
- shield element 11 forms a housing to substantially cover, on at least one side, any exposed surface of said shackle 21.
- a protector plate 25 covers exposed edges of the U- shaped padlock where the main body 16 fits into void 22 from the lateral direction when in a locked position. Access to shackle 21 from above is also prohibited by a cover/head structure 28 that abuts with an upper surface of the legs of U shaped padlock 20.
- Main body 16 and head structure 28 of shield element 11 generally extend across the void 22 to be flush with the width of padlock 20. In use, the assembled structure and padlock is closely located against a disc brake or other item to be locked.
- abutment element 14 is, in use, sandwiched against a brake disc or like structure (see Figures 7 and 8) on its inward face and held in place by a flanged distal end 27, e.g. an annular head, of the engagement pin 12.
- opening 13 of the abutment element 14 has a circular configuration to enable it to rotate about axis A, as denoted by curved directional arrow R, when engaged with distal end 27, even in the locked position. In this way no torque can be applied through pin 12 to proximal end or shackle of the lock by virtue of a tool gripping an external structure of abutment element 14.
- through-opening 13 has a rectangular configuration on that side which accommodates/guides mating-shaped proximal end 17 of engagement pin 12.
- Abutment element 14 is able to turn upon static pin 12 by virtue of the diameter of the main shaft of pin 12 being just less than the minimum-width of opening 13, as seen from Figure 6.
- the engagement pin 12 of Figures 1 to 3 is a relatively short member for compatibility to extend through an opening in a single brake disc ( Figure 7) by leaving only enough clearance between abutment element 14 and padlock 20 to fit a thickness of the disc brake.
- An alternative embodiment is shown in Figures 4 (exploded view) and 5 (assembled view) where a long form member 29 is provided in place of engagement pin 12, e.g. for compatibility to extend through aligned openings in two brake discs (Figure 8).
- member 29 has an extended shaft length which can be dimensioned to correspond to the span between two discs D as shown in Figure 8.
- the illustrated components are otherwise functionally equivalent to Figures 1 to 3.
- the extended pin 29 provides an additional security point since both brake discs are locked and also provides a length onto which a chain can be attached. Via a chain the vehicle can be secured to a static structure such as a lamp post.
- Figure 7 shows the invention securing a front wheel of a dual disc brake motorcycle according to the first embodiment where one of the discs is secured.
- the invention may also be applied to single disc brakes or rear brakes.
- alternative vehicles which may have a sprocket or other rotating member needed to be secured can also be locked with the invention so long as a sufficient through-hole is provided in the item to be secured.
- Figure 8 shows the invention securing the front wheel of a dual disc brake motorcycle according to the second embodiment where both discs are secured.
- padlock 20 is of a conventional design and alternatives may be substituted so long as the void 22 is compatible with main body 16.
- Pin 12/29 can be provided for compatibility with particular models of motorbike or other vehicles/structures to be locked as needed.
- the locking device of the invention should be formed from high grade steel that is tough to cut and will withstand high impacts, freeze attacks and cutting tools.
- the parts are machines from a single block/billet, thus having no inherent vulnerability unlike assembled or welded parts.
- the design of the device to house the padlock and shackle offers no easy access for cutting tools, grinders and the like, to the shackle of the padlock or any other vulnerable parts of the device.
- the abutment element is preferably a separate unit from the connecting shaft (pin) thus not allowing twist or brake style attacks where both ends would be forced in an opposite direction, although abutment to the item being locked could be provided directly by the distal end 27 of pin 12/29.
- the invention may be provided as a kit of parts, including a padlock, or separate replaceable parts.
- pins 12 and 29 may include dimensions suited to particular motorbike manufacturers, types, rear sprockets and front or rear wheel disc brakes and may be interchangeable or sold separately from the kit.
- the shield element as compatible with the recess of a U-shaped padlock or the like does not essentially require an engagement pin if the item to be locked is not akin to a disc brake.
- the shield element alone functions effectively to prevent access to a padlock shackle in other scenarios such as padlocks used in a conventional role to lock a door (vehicle or otherwise).
- ground anchors for vehicle security may also use the same padlock and shield element assembly as a cost effective means of securing one object to another.
- recess 15 which receives engagement pin 12 is not necessary, although for manufacturing consistency it could still be included if offered alongside the disc brake lock solution.
- Padlock 20 is effectively an integrated unit with shield element 11 which still serves to house a shackle (not seen, but would extend through opening 30 across void 22/recess 15) while simultaneously receiving an engagement pin, the opening 17 of which aligns with opening 30.
- the shackle is effectively protected from five lateral directions while the sixth direction is obscured by close proximity to an item being locked, e.g. a brake disc.

Abstract
L'invention concerne un ensemble de verrouillage (10), lequel ensemble comprend un élément de blindage (11) qui est configuré de façon à venir en prise avec un creux (22) dans un cadenas en forme de U (20) de façon à recevoir simultanément une manille (21) du cadenas et une extrémité (17) d'une broche de prise (12) tandis qu'il protège des surfaces exposées de ladite manille (21). Le blindage empêche efficacement une manipulation frauduleuse ou une attaque sur la manille ou d'autres parties vulnérables. Lors de l'utilisation, la broche de prise (12) peut s'étendre à travers une ouverture dans un article à verrouiller, tel que les freins à disque d'une motocyclette.
