Definitions
- the object of the invention is a method for signalling the state of an element of transport infrastructure and a set for the realisation of this method.
- the invention relates to an improvement with respect to efficient notification of users of transport infrastructure about the state or specific features of the place in which they are currently in.
- This data is transmitted at short distances (in the order of several, or about a dozen metres) by means of geolocation beacons of the Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) standard and the so-called BLE marketing channel, only in the broadcast mode, to all receiving devices (smartphones) present at the given moment within the radio signal range of a notifying device.
- BLE Bluetooth Low Energy
- Signalling of the state of transport infrastructure is traditionally realised by informing about a long-term change in the state of the given road fragment (or a specific device, located within this fragment) by means of mass media - announcements, information boards or even sheets of paper with proper information in print, or people who provide such information (for example, a police officer who directs local traffic during a traffic accident).
- Another method involves embedding notification about a change in the state into road devices, such as traffic lights on crossroads (the popular "light”), or acoustic signals for the visually impaired. Such notification is partially included in the traffic code (mainly the traffic lights), and due to this it is largely standardised.
- the traffic light must be in sight, which is not always possible (e.g. the lights are covered by a lorry in a lane ahead of us, the sun is shining such that the contrast of the signal is insufficient, rain or snow is falling which blurs the view, etc.).
- traffic lights are only available to people with regular eyesight and not suffering from eye diseases or impairments, like colour blindness or myopia.
- acoustic signalling accompanying light signals is not standardised by the law and it often changes in form (usually they are simple sounds with a specified frequency), which leads to misunderstandings and requires prior knowledge of local "customs" in that regard. It leads to unrealisticities such as a sound signalling a possibility to cross the street in one place, and several streets away - a similar sound prohibiting crossing.
- Document US 20120206483 A1 discloses a solution which uses transmission in a band of 700 MHz and 5.9 MHz, which radio ranges are not directly supported by smartphones, nor are they placed within the so-called “citizen band”.
- the solution is rather used to inform about unexpected obstacles on the path of movement (e.g. a pedestrian on a crossing), also not providing for the use of any elements of infrastructure of geolocation beacons.
- the solution works in a given vehicle (information about an obstacle on a local screen, alternatively on the windscreen - a head-up display).
- the solution does not provide for the notification of other devices in vehicles or elements of transport infrastructure, nor does it use radio-based digital transmission of data (radio waves are used only as a sensor radio beam).
- the solution proposed in the invention enables the use of a smartphone as a receiving/notifying device, both inside a vehicle, as well as in pedestrian traffic, and the arrangement of distinguishable transmission devices in intervals of even several metres and the presence of numerous receivers in the same place using the same transmitter.
- the proposed solution also provides for the use of some extensions of the iBeacon Marketing Channel information exchange standard, not introducing its own information representation standard.
- Document WO2017181881 (A1) (D2) describes Bluetooth transmitters integrated with traffic lights and automation of the selection of traffic priority for vehicles at a crossroads.
- the solution provides for the possibility of automation in determining the order of vehicles passing through a critical section or alerts the drivers about a possible conflict, by repeating information from light signals in Bluetooth transmission, by means of LED lamps with integrated radio transmitters.
- the solution does not provide for the use of geolocation beacons, nor does it predict the transmission of information about future changes in the state (only the current state).
- the solution assumes integration of Bluetooth transmission with LED lights only.
- the proposed solution integrates beacons with any element of transport infrastructure, including one lacking a power supply (like, e.g.
- the proposed solution uses the popular BLE Marketing Channel standard, which enables interpretation oF the signal by means oF a commonly available programming code and a standard smartphone with a BLE radio transmission module.
- Document CN206058524 (U) (D3) describes a specialised controller oF traFFic lights which can communicate with a controlling/managing device by means oF Bluetooth transmission.
- the device does not enable notiFication oF drivers about a change in the state - the communication module serves solely For programming the operation oF the device by an administrator.
- This module works in a classic pairing mode (which requires prior mutual registration oF each transmitter-receiver pair) using the popular HC-06 module, which does not realise BLE transmission, nor can it work as a BLE geolocation beacon to transmit in the broadcasting mode the state oF the device via radio.
- documents D1 -D3 disclose elements oF transport inFrastructure, including traFFic lights, provided with elements oF uni- and bidirectional radio communication.
- elements which are devices mounted inside vehicles.
- They Focus on traFFic lights on crossroads, skipping other elements, like roadworks, accidents, damaged road surFace, high curbs - impediments not only For drivers, but also For pedestrians.
- the documents do not disclose the transmission oF data to mobile telephones present at the same place oF the road, nor the use oF systems like iBeacon location beacons or BLE radio transmission.
- the purpose oF the present invention is to provide a new, improved method For signalling the state oF an element oF transport inFrastructure and a set For the realisation oF this method that lacks the abovementioned disadvantages, as well as to improve eFFicient notiFication oF the users oF transport inFrastructure about the state or speciFic Features oF their current location.

- variable BLE identifier somehow departs from the standard (somehow, since formally the standard does not introduce any limitations in here), but this slight change prevents the use of current location solutions (as part of the presented invention, a suitable scanner has been developed, resistant to such situations - however, this software is not currently and commonly available).
- the presented invention has managed to solve the problem of the lack of an efficient method for notifying about a change in the state of a transport infrastructure or device.
- BLE Bluetooth Low Energy standard
- modified geolocation beacons operating with the use of this standard, as well as smartphones as devices of basic contact with the user (human).
- the notifying device being the essence of the described invention, operates based on the following principles:
- connection to the displaying device is made automatically, as soon as both devices are within direct range of BLE radio transmission (from several to about a dozen metres);
- radio transmission is local and it proceeds only in one direction - from the notifying to the notified device (smartphone), without confirmation;
- the transmitted signal comprises identifier of the type of the given place (e.g., a traffic light, a road obstruction, a pedestrian crossing, a high curb, etc.) and its state (on/off, active or passive, time until changing the state, etc.);
- the type of the given place e.g., a traffic light, a road obstruction, a pedestrian crossing, a high curb, etc.
- its state on/off, active or passive, time until changing the state, etc.
- the notified device autonomously decides which actions to take after receiving the notification.
- the following signalling is possible:
- acoustic an acoustic signal or voice message synthesis
- the notifying device is realised with the use of a Bluetooth Low Energy transmission module operating in the "geolocation beacon" mode.
- the use of the beacon differs from the classic one in that a part of the identifier (specifically, the “minor” and “major” fields) is used as a variable and shows the current state and type of the given fragment of transport infrastructure (e.g., a curb/edge of the carriageway, a traffic light, a pedestrian crossing, an elevator, etc.).
- the state of the device depends on its current condition and type - for example, for a traffic light it will be the current colour of the displayed signal and seconds remaining until its change, for signalling of roadworks - the predicted time of their completion, etc.
- the signal from a beacon reaches by broadcasting all BLE receivers (smartphones) which are present nearby (meaning within a radius from several to about a dozen metres, depending on the programmed power of the transmitter).
- BLE receivers smarttphones
- Receivers provided with a suitable application operating in the background receive the signal and interpret the transmitted information. If the information is of significance for the owner of a smartphone, it is presented in an acoustic or visual form by means of this device. For example, after approaching a signal, on the screen we see the colour of lights and the number of seconds which are remaining until its change (Fig.
- our smartphone can also detect (based on information from built-in sensors like an accelerometer) whether we are walking or driving a car, and properly adjust the presented information to our current situation.
- a notifying device built into the transport infrastructure transmits radio signal in regular time intervals, its structure corresponding to the frame of the so-called BLE marketing channel (Fig. 1).
- the frame contains a constant part (comprising, among other things, a unique identifier of the notifying type) and a variable part, symbolising the current state of the given fragment of infrastructure.
- the frame is transmitted in the BLE radio band at a small distance in broadcast mode and without confirmation.
- the device broadcasting the signal does not know who will receive it, but due to this, the signal may reach many (even hundreds or thousands) receiving devices in a very short time, counted in milliseconds.
- notification can also be related to fast-changing states, for example the number of vehicles on the given segment of a road, the occupancy of parking spaces, moments of changing traffic lights, etc., although on the other hand it might just as well reflect slow-changing situations, like ice on the given segment of a road, a big hole in the carriageway, or a high curb, etc.
- the signal is received by a smartphone and monitoring software running in the background (the so-called BLE scanner).
- Each received information is analysed in terms of repetitiveness (whether it had been lasting for some time and was already previously signalled, or whether it has just appeared) and its content.
- the second aspect of the analysis is related to associating the contents with a proper context and the preferences of the person receiving the notification.
