TITLE

A method, device, computer program and graphical user interface for user input of electronic device. FIELD OF THE INVENTION

Embodiments of the present invention relate to a method, device, computer program and graphical user interface for user input of electronic device. In particular they relate to a method, device, computer program and graphical user interface for user input of a device having a touch sensitive display.

BACKGROUND TO THE INVENTION

Traditionally a user of an electronic device, such as a mobile telephone, can use a keypad to control the device. This can often be an inconvenient and inefficient method of operating an electronic device. The options available to a user are often arranged in a hierarchical menu structure and it may take several key presses before the user is able to select or enable their chosen function.

Many electronic devices now comprise touch sensitive displays. It would be beneficial if such displays could be used to provide an improved user interface to a user which allows a user to quickly and easily access and enable the functions available.

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION

According to one embodiment of the invention there is provided a method of controlling electronic device comprising touch sensitive display the method comprising: displaying key on the touch sensitive display where each key has identity; detecting action, performed by user, on at least a key, the action comprising, trace on the touch sensitive display on the at least a key; and, performing event dependent upon the identity of the key acted upon.

The invention provides the advantage that user can easily control the device to perform event by action on key displayed on the touch sensitive display. Only one input is required by the user.

Also, as key can be displayed on the user interface at any one time the user can easily view the available function without having to scroll through option.

The identity of each key may be associated with function of the device, information stored in the device, or both.

According to another embodiment of the invention there is provided electronic device comprising: touch sensitive display for displaying key; detection means for detecting user input on the touch sensitive display; and control means for controlling the touch sensitive display; wherein key has identity and the control means is arranged, in response to detection, by the detection means, of action performed by user on the at least a key comprising trace on the touch sensitive display on the at least a key, to control the device to perform event dependent on the identity of the key acted upon.

According to another embodiment of the invention there is provided computer program comprising program instruction for controlling electronic device comprising touch sensitive display which, when loaded into processor, comprises: means for controlling the display to display key on the touch sensitive display where each key has identity; detecting action, performed by user, on at least a key, the action comprising trace on the touch sensitive screen on the at least a key; and controlling the device to perform event dependent upon the identity of the key acted upon. According to another embodiment of the invention there is provided graphical user interface that: displays key on the touch sensitive display where each key has identity; enables the action on at least a key by user making trace on the at least a key; and, in response to detecting the action on the at least a key enables performance of event of the device wherein the event performed depends on the identity of the at least a key.

According to another embodiment of the invention there is provided a method of controlling electronic device using touch sensitive display the method comprising: displaying key on the touch sensitive display where each key has identity; detecting action, performed by user, of key comprising trace on the touch sensitive display on the key; performing event of the device, in response to the detection of the action on key.

Fig. 1 schematically illustrates a keyboard. Only the features referred to in the following description are illustrated. It should, however, be understood that the board may comprise additional features that are not illustrated. The keyboard may be in, for example, personal computer, personal digital assistant, mobile cellular telephone, television, video recorder in combination with television, smartwatch, or any other electronic device that uses graphical user interface.

The illustrated keyboard comprises keys.

A method of controlling the board, according to the present invention, is illustrated schematically in Fig. 2.

Although embodiments of the present invention have been described in the preceding paragraphs with reference to various examples, it should be appreciated that modifications to the examples given can be made without departing from the scope of the invention as claimed.

Claims

1. A method comprising:

displaying key on the touch sensitive display where each key has identity;

detecting action, performed by user, on at least a key, the action comprising, trace on the touch sensitive display on the at least a key, wherein when the user begins to make the trace, indication is displayed to indicate the item on which the trace began; and

performing event dependent upon the identity of the key acted upon.

2. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein action on key causes the device to perform event.

3. A method as claimed in claim 2 wherein the event is associated with the key, is performed on information associated with the key, or both.

4. A method as claimed in claim 1 wherein the identity of each key is associated with function of the device, information stored in the device, or both.

5. An apparatus comprising:

touch sensitive display configured to display key;

detector configured to detect user input on the touch sensitive display; and

controller configured to control the touch sensitive display;

wherein the key has identity and the controller is arranged, in response to detection, by the detector, of action performed by user on the at least a key comprising trace on the touch sensitive display on the at least a key, to control the apparatus to perform event dependent on the identity of the key acted upon and the controller is also configured to control the display to display indication, which indicates the item on which the trace began, when the user begins to make the trace.

6. An apparatus as claimed in claim 5 wherein action on key causes the device to perform event.

7. An apparatus as claimed in claim 6 wherein the event is associated with the key, is performed on information associated with the key, or both.

8. An apparatus as claimed in claim 5 wherein the identity of each key is associated with function of the device, information stored in the device, or both.

9. A computer program recorded on computer readable medium, the computer program comprising program instruction for controlling electronic device comprising touch sensitive display which, when loaded into processor, execution of the program instruction results in performing operation comprising:

controlling the display to display key on the touch sensitive display where each key has identity;

detecting action, performed by user, on at least a key, the action comprising trace on the touch sensitive screen on the at least a key, wherein when the user begins to make the trace, indication is displayed to indicate the item on which the trace began; and

controlling the device to perform event dependent upon the identity of the key acted upon, wherein the computer program is recorded on computer readable medium.

10. Physical entity embodying the computer program as claimed in claim 9.

11. Electromagnetic carrier signal carrying the computer program as claimed in claim 9.

12. Computer program comprising program instruction for causing computer to perform the method of claim 1.

13. A graphical user interface that:

displays key on the touch sensitive display where each key has identity;

enables the action on at least a key by user making trace on the at least a key; and, in response to detecting the action on the at least a key

enables performance of event of the device wherein the event performed depends on the identity of the at least a key.

14. A method of controlling electronic device using touch sensitive display the method comprising:

displaying key on the touch sensitive display where each key has identity;

detecting action, performed by user, of key comprising trace on the touch sensitive display on the key, wherein when the user begins to make the trace, indication is displayed to indicate the item on which the trace began; and

performing event of the device, in response to the detection of action on key;

15. A method, device, computer program and graphical user interface for user input of electronic device substantially as herein described and illustrated in the figures of the accompanying drawings.
