Abstract
An exercise equipment for activating the muscles of the hands and upper body during running. The exercise equipment includes at least two attachment means (10, 20) for attaching at least one elastic resistance band (30). The first attachment means (10) is arranged to be attached to the area between the shoulder and the elbow of the first arm of the exercise equipment user. The second attachment means (20) is arranged to be attached to the body of the user; onto the level of the shoulder, onto the level of the ribcage, or onto the level of the waist. The elastic resistance band (30) creates a resistance to the upper arm movement of the user. The elastic resistance band (30) stretches as it is pulled and returns to its original length as the pulling is released.

The invention relates to exercise equipment. Specifically, the invention relates to an equipment creating elastic resistance to the movement of the hands, for example, in connection with running or walking.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Forward-rolled shoulders and chronic neck pain are a quite common
phenomenon in modern persons. In the background are often excessive sitting, display terminal work or smartphone use.
In jogging or fitness walking, the greatest stress is directed onto the legs, wherein the muscles of the hands or upper body are not activated. Nordic walking is one example of an exercise form, in which walking is combined with training activating the upper body. Nordic walking is expressly suitable for walking, as the use of poles in a running movement is troublesome. Running with various additional weights can activate the hands or muscles, but, in this case, a portion of the stress is directed statically against gravity.
Correspondingly, free weights can be troublesome while moving and form a storage problem in the case of several separate units. Prior known are also various compression clothings and solutions, in which force resisting movement is formed by fibres embedded in the fabric.
SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION
The object of the invention is to obviate or at least mitigate the above said disadvantages. An exercise equipment according to the invention is
characterized in that, which is presented in claim 1 . Specifically, the object of the invention is to disclose a novel exercise equipment, which activates the muscles of the hands and upper body during running. The exercise equipment includes at least two attachment means for attaching at least one elastic resistance band. The first attachment means is arranged to be attached to the area between the shoulder and the elbow of the first arm of the exercise equipment user. In one embodiment, the first attachment means is arranged to be attached to the elbow. The second attachment means is arranged to be attached to the body of the user; in one embodiment, onto the level of the shoulder, in a second embodiment, onto the level of the ribcage, and, in a third embodiment, onto the level of the waist. The first end of the first elastic resistance band is attached to the first attachment means and the second end to the second attachment means, wherein the elastic resistance band creates a resistance to the upper arm movement of the user. The elastic resistance band stretches as it is pulled and returns to its original length as the pulling is released. The resistance band can be made of rubber, a synthetic elastomer or a rope-like braided material. Herein, the structure is described only from the other side of the body. In one embodiment, a corresponding structure is implemented on both sides of the body to limit the movement of both upper arms.
In one embodiment, the second attachment means is arranged to fit around the waist of the user. One example of the second attachment means is a belt; another example is a shirt, jacket or corresponding outfit having an attachment site for an elastic resistance band arranged to the waist.
In one embodiment, the exercise equipment includes a second elastic resistance band, the first end of which is attached to the first attachment means and the second end to the second attachment means at a distance from the attachment point of the first elastic resistance band. The first elastic resistance band resists an upper arm movement directed rearwards and the second elastic resistance band resists an upper arm movement directed forwards. For example, the first elastic resistance band is attached to the front side of the waist, to the edge on the side of the elbow and to the elbow, and the second elastic resistance band is attached to the dorsal side of the waist, to the edge on the side of the elbow and to the elbow. As the elbow is next to the waist, neither of the elastic resistance bands tightens, but an upper arm movement directed forwards from the waist tightens the second resistance band attached to the dorsal side, and a movement directed rearwards from the waist tightens the resistance band on the front side. In one embodiment, the second attachment means is a posture belt, which has a rigid plate supporting the spine, support straps arranged to be attached around both shoulders of the user, and a belt arranged to be attached around the waist. In one embodiment, the belt includes a first attachment point on the front side of the belt and a second attachment point on the rear side of the belt, wherein two elastic resistance bands can be connected thereto.
In one embodiment, the first attachment means is arranged to be attached to the bend of the elbow. The attachment means includes a tightening structure, which enables the movement of the resistance band through the attachment means. Through the tightening structure, the first elastic resistance band and/or the second elastic resistance band is/are to be conveyed onto the palm of the user, wherein the user can loosely squeeze the end of the resistance band in his/her hand to secure the attachment. The elastic resistance band unwinds through the tightening structure, when the end of the resistance band is free. The tightening structure can be, for example, similar to a safety device or rope brake used in climbing. The tightness of the elastic resistance band can be adjusted by squeezing the resistance band from a selected point into the palm.
In one embodiment, the first elastic resistance band comprises resistance between 0,8 kg and 2,5 kg at 50% elongation and resistance between 1 ,3 kg and 4,0 kg at 150% elongation. The resistance change may be linear or almost linear between the 50% elongation and the 150% elongation. The elongation refers to the distance that the resistance band elongates when a weight is pulling the resistance band vertically from the lower end and the upper end is connected to a fixed position. The resistance bands may comprise different values, wherein a light range elastic resistance band has 50% elongation at 0,8 kg and 150% elongation at 1 ,3 kg. A heavy range elastic resistance band may have 50% elongation at 2,5 kg and 150% elongation at 4,0 kg. A medium range elastic resistance band may have values between the examples described hereinbefore.
In one embodiment, the second elastic resistance band comprises resistance between 0,8 kg and 2,5 kg at 50% elongation and resistance between 1 ,3 kg and 4,0 kg at 150% elongation. In one embodiment, the first elastic resistance band comprises resistance between 1 ,0 kg and 2,2 kg at 50% elongation and resistance between 2,2 kg and 3,6 kg at 150% elongation. In one embodiment, the second elastic resistance band comprises resistance between 1 ,0 kg and 2,2 kg at 50% elongation and resistance between 2,2 kg and 3,6 kg at 150% elongation.
In one embodiment, the first attachment means is arranged to be attached to the bend of the elbow. The first attachment means comprising a first strap having first tightening means configured to be tightened around the arm above the elbow; and a second strap having second tightening means configured to be tightened around the arm below the elbow. The first strap and the second strap are configured to be connected at an overlapping area positioned at the side of the elbow directed towards the user's torso, and the tip of the elbow is configured to be visible when the first attachment means is worn by the user. The first attachment means is x-shaped having the first tightening means and the second tightening means with one overlapping portion. The first attachment means may be made of single piece of fabric, wherein the overlapping portion is
formed by contouring the fabric to resemble two overlapping straps. The arrangement leaves in one embodiment the tip of the elbow open. The user may find this comfortable during the exercise, for example running with the exercise equipment, as the tip of the elbow may be prone to chafing during long distance running.
In one embodiment, the first elastic resistance band and/or the second elastic resistance band are connectable to a connector positioned at the overlapping area of the first strap and the second strap. The connector may be a stud or a button enabling torsional movement between the two overlapping straps. The connection may be disconnectable.
In one embodiment, the first elastic resistance band and/or the second elastic resistance band comprise a first magnetic portion configured to be magnetically connected to a connector having a second magnetic portion positioned to the first attachment means. Either the first magnetic portion or the second magnetic portion is magnetic material attracting metals, wherein one magnetic portion may comprise magnetizable material, for example iron. The magnetic material attracts magnetizable material, wherein the first magnetic portion and the second magnetic portion interact to be in magnetic contact when brought near each other. In one embodiment the first magnetic portion and the second magnetic portion both comprise magnetic material, wherein the magnets are aligned according to the magnetic fluxes passing the first magnetic portion and eh second magnetic portion. The connection provided to resistance band is magnetic, enabling is to disconnect when a predefined threshold force is exceeded. The connection is quick and secure, yet safely disconnected if the user needs hands to improve balance or to use hands to receive an impact.
In one embodiment the exercise equipment comprises a connector guide connected to the first attachment means. The connector guide comprises edges configured to receive the first magnetic portion between the edges. The second magnetic portion is a metal plate configured to be secured between the first attachment means and the connector guide. The connector guide is configured to guide the connection between the first magnetic portion and the second
magnetic portion. The magnetic connection may hold well vertically but be weaker horizontally - the connector guide hinders the horizontal movement and further secures the magnetic connection.
In one embodiment, the second attachment means comprises the belt arranged to be attached around the waist and an accessory portion connected between the belt and to a thigh strap configured to be tightened around the user's thigh when the user is wearing the accessory portion. The accessory portion may be a light pocket for protein bars, keys or other small objects. The accessory portion may be a holster attached around the user's thigh. In one embodiment, the accessory portion comprises a leash connector for a dog leash.
The invention provides a novel solution for activating the muscles of the hands or upper body in connection with running or walking. The resistance created by the resistance bands activates the muscles of the neck and shoulder area as the runner does his hand movements. The solution is small, light and easily stored. The amount of resistance can be easily adjusted as suitable for the user by transferring the attachment points or selecting resistance bands equipped with a suitable resistance. Effective movement of the hands provides rhythm to the running and also intensifies the working of the lower body. The energy consumption of the training increases. Regular activation of the muscles of the neck and shoulder area decreases chronic pain, improves local blood circulation of the muscles and increases metabolism. At the same time, muscle strength increases and posture improves.

DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
Fig. 1 shows schematically one embodiment of an exercise equipment, which is worn by the user. The first attachment means 10 is, for example, a cuff, a ribbon to be tightened around the arm by a Velcro band or a ring-like piece made, for example, of neoprene or a corresponding flexible material, which tightens around the arm 1 1 of the user. Depending on the embodiment, the exercise equipment creates resistance to a unidirectional or back-and-forth movement of the upper arm, consequently, the first attachment means is to be attached between the shoulder and the elbow. Thus, the forearms of the user remain free, wherein the running movement feels more natural. The second attachment means 20 is attached to the body 21 of the user. In this example, the second attachment means is attached around the waist of the user, wherein it can be, for example, a belt. The first elastic resistance band 30 has two ends. The first end 31 is attached to the first attachment means 10 and the second end 32 to the second attachment means 20.
In one embodiment, the first attachment means 10 and the second attachment means 20 are integrated as a part of clothing to be worn, such as a shirt or jacket. In this case, the parts of the exercise equipment are constantly secured in one unit and the possibility of parts getting lost is eliminated. The attachment means can have several attachment points, which the user may use to adjust the length, height or other geometric relationship of the resistance band in order that the movement of the resistance band fits ergonomically to the physique of the user. The length of the resistance band 30 can be adjustable, for example, by a buckle, or by tightening means in connection with the attachment means. In one embodiment, the resistance band 30 is replaceable, wherein the user can select a resistance suitable for himself/herself from resistance bands equipped with various characteristics.
Fig. 2 shows schematically the exercise equipment of Fig. 1 in a situation, in which the hands of the user are in a resting position against the body. The resistance band 30 is to be adjusted such that, in the resting position, no resistance whatsoever is created to the hand of the user. Fig. 3 shows the
exercise equipment of Fig. 1 in a situation, in which the hands of the user are in a running position, the upper arm being turned rearwards. In this position, the resistance band 30 tightens and creates a resistance to the upper arm.
Fig. 4 shows schematically one embodiment of the exercise equipment, in which to one arm are attached two resistance bands on different sides of the body. The first end 41 of one elastic resistance band 40 is attached to the first attachment means 10 and the second end 42 to the second attachment means 20. The attachment points of the second attachment means 20 are spaced apart such that one is on the front side of the lateral line and the other is on the rear side of the lateral line of the body. In this case, the first elastic resistance band 30 resists an upper arm movement directed rearwards and the second elastic resistance band 40 resists an upper arm movement directed forwards.
Fig. 5 shows one embodiment of the exercise equipment, in which the second attachment means 20 is a posture belt 50. The posture belt 50 is intended to support the body of the user and to improve posture. The spine is supported by a plate 51 or corresponding rigid or semi-rigid structure. Around both shoulders are arranged support straps 52, 53. In this example, the support straps 52, 53 guide the shoulders of the user lightly rearwards. The posture belt 50 is supported from its lower part by a belt 54, arranged to be attached around the waist, which includes a first attachment point on the front side of the body and a second attachment point 42 on the rear side of the body. In this example, by the terms front side and rear side are meant the two sides divided from the side by the lateral line of the body. The resistance bands 30, 40 connected to the posture belt 50 intensify the muscle activation occurring while running. The posture belt 50 guides the posture of the runner into the proper position, wherein the elastic resistance formed by the resistance bands 30, 40 attached to the arms is directed more effectively. The posture belt 50 also provides a wide variety of attachment possibilities for the first attachment means 10 and the second attachment means 20. In one embodiment, the posture belt 50 is integrated as a part of clothing to be worn, such as a shirt or jacket.
Fig. 6 shows schematically one embodiment of the exercise equipment, in which the resistance band 30 is to be secured by the hand grip of the user. The first attachment means 10 is arranged to be attached to the bend of the elbow. The first attachment means 10 includes a tightening structure 60, through which the first elastic resistance band 30 and/or the second elastic resistance band 40 is to be conveyed onto the palm of the user. The user can loosely squeeze the end 33 of the resistance band in his hand to secure the attachment. If the user lets go of the end 33 of the resistance band, the elastic resistance band 30, 40 unwinds through the tightening structure 60. If the user runs in rugged terrain and there is a risk of falling, securing by hand can be used to enable the quick release of the resistance bands. As he falls, a runner often instinctively opens his hands and stretches them out in front of himself, using the hands to break the fall. In this case, the elastic resistance band 30, 40 does not inhibit the user. The tightening structure 60 is, for example, a rope brake known from climbing supplies, which is adapted to function with the elastic band.
Fig. 7 shows schematically one embodiment, in which the resistance band 70 is attached to the front side of the arm. The first attachment means 10 is attached at the elbow. The resistance band 70 extends from the palm 72 via the attachment means 10 to the attachment point 71 attached at the shoulder, wherein the second attachment means is, for example, the support strap 53 of the posture belt 53. In this embodiment, a resistance is created by a common upper arm and forearm movement extending rearwards. In one embodiment, the resistance band 70 is attached from the attachment means 10 to the attachment point 71 without a connection to the palm 72, wherein a resistance is created only by an upper arm movement extending rearwards.
Correspondingly, in one embodiment, to the rear side of the arm is arranged a second resistance band, wherein a resistance is also created to an upper arm and arm movement directed forwards.
Fig. 8 shows schematically the movement between the attachment means 10, 20 and the resistance bands 30, 40. The attachment means 10, 20 are shown as flat plates and the resistance bands 30, 40 between these as geometrically
highlighted. The first elastic resistance band 30 and the second elastic resistance band 40 join in a triangular shape at a common attachment point 31 , which is placed at the lateral line 83 of the body. The attachment point 31 can be removable, wherein the user can, if needed, keep the first attachment means 10, for example, cuffs tightened at the elbows, in place without the resistance bands inhibiting movements of the arm. A movement of the first attachment means 10 in the direction of the arrow 82 from the site of the lateral line 83 of the body tightens the first elastic resistance band 30, wherein the second elastic resistance band 40 can hang free. As the first attachment means 10 is moved back in the direction of the arrow 81 , the stress of the first elastic resistance band unwinds all the way to the lateral line 83 of the body, until the second elastic resistance band 40 begins to tighten and the first elastic resistance band 30 can hang free.
In one embodiment, in connection with the resistance bands is arranged a measuring device, which can collect electrical parameters from a performance. The measurement device includes at least one processor and a memory, into which a computer program can be stored. By executing the program, the processor causes the measuring device to collect resistance data as a function of time from the resistance band, as well as to send the data using a data communications connection to another device. The measuring device can also store the data to be collected during a performance into its memory and transfer the data to another device, for example, after the performance. The second device can be, for example, a sports computer, which analyses the parameters of the performance. Fig. 9 illustrates schematically one example of an embodiment having two first attachment means 10, one for the left arm and one for the right arm. The first attachment means 10 is configured to be attached to bend of the elbow. This embodiment discloses two crossing straps - a first strap 91 and a second strap 92. The straps 91 , 92 are connected at an overlapping area 96 positioned at the side of the elbow directed towards the user's torso, when the user is wearing the exercise equipment. The first strap 91 comprises first tightening means 93
configured to be tightened around the arm above the elbow, whereas the second strap 92 comprises second tightening means 94 configured to be tightened around the arm below the elbow. The tip of the user's elbow may be left free, thereby reducing the risk of chafing during running or other exercise. The first elastic resistance band 30 and the second elastic resistance band 40 are connectable to a connector 95 positioned at the overlapping area 96 of the first strap 91 and the second strap 92. The overlapping area 96 and the connector 95 are pointed towards the user's torso when the user is wearing the exercise equipment. Fig. 10 illustrates schematically one example of an embodiment having the connector 96 and the edges 97. In this example the edges 97 are round surrounding the connector entirely. The edges 97 may be partial, hindering the movement of the first magnetic portion. In this example the first magnetic portion and the second magnetic portion 98 have a male-female connection, wherein the male first magnetic portion enters the female second magnetic portion 98. The male-female configuration may be reversed, wherein in one embodiment the first magnetic portion has female characteristics and the second magnetic portion 98 has male characteristics.
Referring to Fig. 9, a second magnetic portion 98 is positioned under the connector 96, wherein the connector 96 may receive a first magnetic portion configured to interact magnetically and mechanically with the connector 96. The second magnetic portion 98 may be a metal plate configured to attract magnetic material.
Fig. 1 1 illustrates schematically multiple detailed views of one example of the connector 96 and the edges 97. The connector 96 may comprise a slot enabling easy attachment to the straps 91 , 92, wherein the strap width may be 20mm, not limiting the size to this example. The edges 97 may comprise forms that secure the first magnetic portion and its casing. Alternatively, the female type connector 96 may be positioned to the first elastic resistance band 30 and/or to
the second elastic resistance band 40, wherein the connector 96 may resemble a metal button.
Fig. 12 illustrates multiple examples of accessories that may be used with the exercise equipment. The upper portion of an accessory portion 122 is connected to the belt 54 and the lower portion is connected to a thigh strap 121 configured to be tightened around the user's thigh when the user is wearing the accessory portion 122. The accessory portion 122 and its components are illustrated in the examples A-D. The user may carry small items in the accessory portion, such as electronic devices, drinks or energy bars. In one embodiment the accessory portion 122 comprises a leash connector 123 for a dog leash. The leash connector 122 may be a simple shackle configured to receive a basic leash or it may comprise a pocket to house more complicated leashes such as a flexi leash.
Fig. 13 illustrates one example of an embodiment having different resistance bands. The elongation is indicated are a percentage of the nominal length, wherein 0% indicates that the resistance band has no elongation, i.e. it is not stretched. The resistance bands may be interchangeable, the user may select the most suitable resistance. The length of the first elastic resistance band 30 and/or the second elastic resistance band 40 are adjustable in an embodiment. The ranges illustrated in Fig. 13 are examples of one embodiment that have been discovered to be comfortable for users of different sizes and strengths.
The invention is not limited as relating only to the embodiment examples presented above, rather many variations are possible within the scope of the inventive idea defined in the claims.
Claims
An exercise equipment, characterized in that it includes:
a first attachment means (10), which is arranged to be attached to the area between the shoulder and the elbow of the first arm (1 1 ) of the exercise equipment user;
a second attachment means (20), which is arranged to be attached to the body (21 ) of the user;
a first elastic resistance band (30), the first end (31 ) of which is attached to the first attachment means (10) and the second end (32) to the second attachment means (20), wherein the elastic resistance band (30) creates a resistance to an upper arm movement of the user.
An exercise equipment according to claim 1 , characterized in that the second attachment means (20) is arranged to fit around the waist of the user.
An exercise equipment according to claim 1 or 2, characterized in that it includes a second elastic resistance band (40), the first end (41 ) of which is attached to the first attachment means (10) and the second end (42) to the second attachment means (20) at a distance from the second attachment point (32) of the first elastic resistance band (30) such that the first elastic resistance band (30) resists an upper arm movement directed rearwards and the second elastic resistance band (40) resists an upper arm movement directed forwards.
An exercise equipment according to any one of claims 1 - 3,
characterized in that the second attachment means (20) is a posture belt (50) having:
a plate (51 ) supporting the spine;
support straps (52, 53) arranged to be attached around both shoulders of the user; and
a belt (54) arranged to be attached around the waist, which includes a first attachment point on the front side of the waist and a second attachment point (42) on the rear side of the waist. An exercise equipment according to any one of claims 1 - 4,
characterized in that the first attachment means (10) is arranged to be attached to the bend of the elbow and it includes a tightening structure (60), through which the first elastic resistance band (30) and/or the second elastic resistance band (40) is to be conveyed onto the palm of the user, wherein the user can loosely squeeze the end of the resistance band (33) in his hand to secure the attachment and the elastic resistance band (30, 40) unwinds through the tightening structure (60), when the end (30, 40) of the elastic resistance band is free.
An exercise equipment according to any one of claims 1 - 5,
characterized in that the first elastic resistance band (30) comprises resistance between 0,8 kg and 2,5 kg at 50% elongation and resistance between 1 ,3 kg and 4,0 kg at 150% elongation.
An exercise equipment according to any one of claims 1 - 6,
characterized in that the second elastic resistance band (40) comprises resistance between 0,8 kg and 2,5 kg at 50% elongation and resistance between 1 ,3 kg and 4,0 kg at 150% elongation.
An exercise equipment according to any one of claims 1 - 5,
characterized in that the first elastic resistance band (30) comprises resistance between 1 ,0 kg and 2,2 kg at 50% elongation and resistance between 2,2 kg and 3,6 kg at 150% elongation.
An exercise equipment according to any one of claims 1 - 6,
characterized in that the second elastic resistance band (40) comprises
resistance between 1 ,0 kg and 2,2 kg at 50% elongation and resistance between 2,2 kg and 3,6 kg at 150% elongation.
10. An exercise equipment according to any one of claims 1 - 9,
characterized in that the first attachment means (10) is arranged to be attached to the bend of the elbow, comprising:
a first strap (91 ) having first tightening means (93) configured to be tightened around the arm above the elbow;
a second strap (92) having second tightening means (94) configured to be tightened around the arm below the elbow;
wherein the first strap (91 ) and the second strap (92) are configured to be connected at an overlapping area (96) positioned at the side of the elbow directed towards the user's torso, and the tip of the elbow is configured to be visible when the first attachment means (10) is worn by the user.
1 1 .An exercise equipment according to claim 10, characterized by the first elastic resistance band (30) and/or the second elastic resistance band (40) being connectable to a connector (95) positioned at the overlapping area (96) of the first strap (91 ) and the second strap (92).
12. An exercise equipment according to any one of claims 1 - 1 1 ,
characterized by the first elastic resistance band (30) and/or the second elastic resistance band (40) comprising a first magnetic portion configured to be magnetically connected to a connector (95) having a second magnetic portion positioned to the first attachment means (10).
13. An exercise equipment according to claim 12, characterized by
comprising a connector guide (96) connected to the first attachment means (10);
the connector guide (96) comprising edges (97) configured to receive the first magnetic portion between the edges (97); and
the second magnetic portion being a metal plate (98) configured to be secured between the first attachment means (10) and the connector guide (96). 14. An exercise equipment according to any one of claims 1 - 13,
characterized in that the second attachment means (20) comprises a belt (54) arranged to be attached around the waist and an accessory portion connected between the belt (54) and to a thigh strap configured to be tightened around the user's thigh when the user is wearing the accessory portion.
15. An exercise equipment according to claim 14, characterized in that the accessory portion comprises a leash connector for a dog leash.
