Definitions
- the present invention relates to a material that changes phase and thus that enables the heat received to be stored and retained.
- Phase change materials store latent heat occurring during the phase change.
- Phase change materials can be basically inorganic or organic. Among organic materials paraffin stands out thanks to its high performance and stable structure. Phase change materials with different structures are selected according to the temperature range where said materials are desired to be used. With phase change materials suitable for use at the freezing temperature of water or at negative centigrade degrees being used in household appliances such as refrigerators, etc., the temperature controls can be carried out by means of phase change materials in case of power outages, thus the interior temperature of the cabin can be kept at proper values for a long time and the shelf life of foodstuffs are increased. Moreover, it is anticipated that obtaining the cooling energy required especially at hours when the electrical energy is expensive by using PCMs will provide cost advantage to the user. In the state of the art, since commercially-available PCMs have very high costs, they cannot be used as cost-effective products.
- the aim of the present invention is the realization of a low-cost phase change material with high performance that is produced by using organic paraffin chains and that changes phase in the similar operating temperatures as the high-cost commercial phase change materials for use in white goods.
- phase change heat retaining material realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention and explicated in the claims is composed of a mixture of paraffins having two different chain lengths.
- the phase change heat retaining material of the present invention comprises c10-c13 n-paraffin 5-30% by weight and c14-c20 n-paraffin 95-70% by weight.
- a low-cost phase change heat retaining material is obtained by mixing the paraffin mixture with water.
- the water ratio is kept at 40-80% by weight and paraffin ratio at 55-5% by weight.
- a surfactant 5-15% by weight is added to the mixture. While the phase change feature of the paraffin chains is utilized, the cost of the phase change heat retaining material is decreased by adding water.
- the enthalpy of the resulting phase change heat retaining material can be between 200 and 300 J/gr, which is higher than that of similar materials.
- c10-c13 n-paraffin and c14-c20 n-paraffin as paraffin, a material that changes phase between -20 and 10°C according to the ratio of the mixture is obtained.
- the phase change temperature of the resulting phase change heat retaining material can be controlled according to the ratio of the paraffins.
- phase change heat retaining materials developed provide a long lifetime of 5-10 hours. While a performance increase of 10% or more is provided compared to similar materials, the production costs are also decrease by half at the least.
- the phase change heat retaining material can be used especially in refrigerators. Thus, energy efficiency is increased. By using the phase change heat retaining materials in the refrigerators, at least 10% energy saving is provided.
- phase change heat retaining material of the present invention By means of the phase change heat retaining material of the present invention, product costs are decreased thanks to the use of inorganic salt hydrates, and a material with high enthalpy values and long lifetime is obtained with the additives and mixture ratios used.
- the phase change heat retaining material of the present invention can be used for at least 2,000 cycles.
- the phase change heat retaining material (1) of the present invention is a phase change heat retaining material (1) comprising paraffin (2) with a content of c10-c13 n-paraffin 5-30% by weight and c14-c20 n-paraffin 95-70% by weight. By changing the mixture ratios of the paraffin (2) chains, the phase change temperature is controlled.
- the phase change heat retaining material (1) comprises the paraffin (2) 55-5% by weight, water (3) 40-80% by weight and a surfactant (4) 5-15% by weight.
- the surfactant (4) is used in the mixture in order to mix the water (3) and the paraffin (2).
- the surfactant (4) comprises polysorbate 60 or polysorbate 80 30-70% by weight and sorbitan ester 60 or sorbitan ester 80 70-30% by weight.
- the density of the paraffin (2) used is between 0.5-1 gr/cm3.
- the phase change material (1) of the present invention is produced by mixing the ingredients for 2-5 hours at 400-700 rpm.
- phase change heat retaining material (1) of the present invention a phase change heat retaining material (1) that is low cost and that provides the same performance compared to the similar state-of-the-art materials is obtained.
