Abstract
The present invention relates to an image display device having an automatic broadcast program offering function such that the users are automatically offered alternative programs. The invention more particularly relates to an image display device receiving a plurality of broadcasting services in connection with at least a first and second tuners, said image display device comprising an electronic control unit effectuating operation of said image display device, a memory unit and a power manager microcontroller having a network interface card in communication therewith.
Description
The present invention relates to an image display device having an automatic broadcast program offering function such that the users are automatically offered alternative programs.
Digital and interactive TV systems provide a significant amount of TV channels and programs leading to the general outcome that conventional methods for reaching a program content corresponding to the personal viewing preferences of a user from among a plurality of alternatives may become inefficient to the extent it is unperformable in a time-saving manner. Assuming that a TV service may have hundreds of channels, channel surfing might take one hour before every single channel is glanced at least once. It is to be noted that a plurality of channels from different countries may be broadcasted in a multitude of categories and an electronic program guide although proving in this respect more efficient, still involves the evident disadvantage of processing time inefficiency for a user in order for examining all the electronic program guide pages.
Accordingly, individual viewing preferences of users can be better processed and more relevant program content can be instantaneously offered to the user without losing the processing time spent in hunting preferable program contents.
On the other hand, user interaction is limited in the sense that the user has to engage in direct interaction with the image display device to initiate a desired function associated with the same.
Among others, one of the prior art disclosures in the technical field of the present invention can be referred to as US20080127241, which relates to a system by which community program ratings are stored, a rating for a program is received and an identification of whether the rating is a private rating for the user or is a rating that can be accessed by a plurality of other users is made. The rating and an indication of whether the rating is a private rating for the user or is a rating that can be accessed by a plurality of other users are sent to a community rating system for storage. To retrieve community program ratings, a request for a rating of a community for a program is received. User ratings for the program are accessed, the user ratings being ratings previously submitted by users in the community that were not identified as being private, and are presented to the user.
The present invention, on the other hand, provides a system and a method by which an image display device is operated such that users are automatically offered an alternative program content upon which the user can optionally remotely initiate a desired function such as programming recording of program contents.
Therefore, user-interaction is improved in the sense that alternative program contents are automatically offered and delivered to users.
The user can directly or remotely obtain information of a real-time program content in the form of an on-screen presentation or an e-mail communication so that the user can initiate a desired function such as switching to the alternative program or recording the same. Assuming that a TV service may have hundreds of channels, there might be occasions where a user may be interested in watching a broadcast program relating to general public interests but he is only able to use conventional methods to directly manually review presented contents on each channel.
The present invention therefore provides a system and method by which an image display device is operable to automatically offer directly or remotely processable alternative program contents as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1 and subsequent Claims.
Primary object of the present invention is to provide a system and method by which an image display device automatically proposes program contents in a directly or remotely processable manner.
The present invention proposes an image display device with a power manager microcontroller receiving a program alert from a remote server in stand-by state and powering an electronic control unit that automatically initiates boot up process and recording of a notified program content. Alternatively, if the TV set is already on when the notification is received from the remote server, said notified program other than a currently viewed program content is automatically reduced into a picture-in-picture window and recorded. The user, simultaneously receiving the notification at his remote terminal remotely communicates with the power manager microcontroller to verify the recording process. If the recording is performed on a remotely basis, it is stopped without further verification in accordance with audience measurement results.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a system and method by which an image display device is operable, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained hereinafter in brief.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in said claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
Fig. 1 demonstrates a general flow diagram according to which the image display device of the invention executes different tasks associated with the alternative program offering function according to the present invention.
The present invention proposes an image display device enabling a user to reach a TV program according to general public interests without having to manually process a significant amount of channel and program type information.
To this end, the image display device of the present invention is fitted with an internal memory. According to the present invention, the user’s viewing experience is improved by enabling accessibility to a more or equally preferable program content as delineated below. The present invention provides that an image display device automatically receives information as to certain broadcast programs based on real-time audience measurement results and directly or remotely provides the user with such information in the form of an on-screen presentation of such alternative program content or an e-mail communication so that the user can initiate a desired function such as switching to the alternative program or recording the same on a storage medium.
The invention proposes an image display device receiving a plurality of broadcasting services and comprising an electronic control unit effecting operation of said image display device. The control unit is configured to effectuate a certain function such as switching to or recording of a real-time alternative program content upon directly or remotely receiving a corresponding request from the user.
An automatic program notification function such that real-time alternative programs relevant to the viewing statistics, i.e. real-time audience measurement results are retrieved by periodically connecting to a remote server such as a third party web resource containing such information. The image display device is remotely controlled by a specific software such as in the case of smart TV control applications running on smartphones or other terminals, computers etc. Therefore, the image display device with Internet connectivity provides that a respective notification is received and viewing or recording of a real-time program content can be performed.
In the case of remote activation of recording function, a network communication module in the form of a sub-unit of the main electronic card and which is in continuously powered state by the power manager microcontroller is used. Therefore, a push notification communicated by the remote server to said power manager microcontroller regarding real-time audience measurement results ensures that the power manager microcontroller in turn supplies power to the electronic control unit of the image display device to initiate recording of the notified alternative program content.
If the image display device is currently viewed, it automatically previews the notified alternative program content in picture-in-picture mode. On the other hand, if the device is in stand-by mode, the power manager microcontroller in connection with said network communication module (a network interface card (NIC)) automatically boots up the device to initiate a desired function. The user hence remotely controls the image display device to effectuate recording of a certain program content.
The image display device of the invention has an interactive system to provide the user with an automatic picture-in-picture (PIP) or picture-and-picture (PAP) screen area. In other words, when the user receives a program alert notification, the broadcast program content currently viewed on a primary channel is maintained as the man screen area outside the PIP screen area and the notified program is automatically reduced to PIP screen mode. Repetitive pressing of a dedicated function button can alternately effect switching to programs on the PIP or main screens.
The image display device of the present invention comprises or communicates with at least a pair of tuners for viewing a first program content and for simultaneously recording a second program content. Said internal memory in the form of a storage drive to store an alternative program content is used for allowing users to later on review the recorded content. In the event that the user initiates a recording session in response to an automatic PIP screen notification and continues to view the main screen area outside the PIP screen in muted mode, this can be particularly advantageous if visual information in the notified content in muted PIP mode reveals that a particular content of interest is present.
The PIP window displaying alternative program contents based on real-time audience measurement results can be selectively semi-transparent or opaque, indicating whether the content of the PIP screen or the main screen is active, i.e. unmuted. A navigation button is practically used to switch between the PIP window and the main screen to indicate which part of the screen will be muted/unmuted by the activation button.
According to a further embodiment of the present invention, when recording of an alternative program contents based on real-time audience measurement results is remotely started, the electronic control unit automatically stops recording and activates stand-by mode when real-time audience measurement results in association with the recorded program content reveal that the viewing rating of the recorded program is no longer above a predetermined level.
The image display device in accordance with the present invention utilizes one of the tuners for displaying a first program content and a second tuner for recording a second program content. Known algorithms such as Bayesian Change Point Analysis or Change Point Detection can be used in the remote server to notify dynamically changing real-time audience measurement results. The remote server is typically an additional service of a broadcasting service provider.
In a nutshell, the present invention proposes an image display device receiving a plurality of broadcasting services in connection with at least a first and second tuners, said image display device comprising an electronic control unit effectuating operation of said image display device, a memory unit and a power manager microcontroller having a network interface card in communication therewith.
In one embodiment of the present invention, said power manager microcontroller remains powered in stand-by state and is configured to receive a notification in relation to real-time audience measurement results in association with real-time program contents on different channels through said network interface card.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said electronic control unit is configured to automatically initiate recording of a notified program content through a first tuner to said memory unit.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, if the image display device is in stand-by state, said power manager microcontroller is configured to supply electrical power to said electronic control unit in the manner to initiate boot up process of the image display device.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, if the image display device is turned on, said electronic control unit is configured to automatically reduce said notified program other than a currently viewed program content into a picture-in-picture window.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the electronic control unit is configured to initiate recording of the notified program being displayed in said picture-in-picture window through said first tuner and display said currently viewed program content receivable through said second tuner outside said picture-in-picture window.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the electronic control unit is configured to selectively switch to said picture-in-picture window or screen outside said picture-in-picture window such that said picture-in-picture window or screen outside said picture-in-picture window are selectively marked to be mutable.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said power manager microcontroller is configured to remotely receive a verification command before supplying electrical power to said electronic control unit, upon which said electronic control unit is configured to initiate recording of a real-time alternative program content.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said power manager microcontroller is configured to receive in stand-by state a notification in relation to real-time audience measurement results in association with real-time program contents on different channels from a remote server.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, said remote server communicates information as to a real-time audience measurement results simultaneously to said power manager microcontroller and a remote terminal other than said image display device.
