Abstract

The invention provides for a pyrometallurgical method for producing a high grade chromium product comprising a first step of reducing a chromium oxide reactant in an electric furnace, with a reducing agent of any one or more of aluminium, silicon or ferrosllicon, to a produce an alloy of ferrochrome; and a second step of oxidising the alloy in a vessel with a refining gas to reduce the amount of silicon or aluminium in the alloy to produce the high grade chromium product.
