Abstract
The present invention relates to a washer / dryer (1) comprising a tub (2), a drum (3) wherein the laundry is placed, that is disposed in the tub (2) and that rotates around its axis, and a sealing element (4) that is disposed between the peripheral rim (9) of the drum (3) and the tub (2).
Description
The present invention relates to a washer / dryer wherein an efficient tightness is provided by means of a low prestress force.
In washers / dryers, the drying air is delivered into the drum. In vertical axis washers / dryers, various sealing elements that provide tightness of the drying air are disposed between the rotating drum and the stationary tub wherein the drum is disposed.
In the state of the art embodiment, the sealing element is composed of a friction element that is produced from felt, that extends along the peripheral rim of the drum and against which the peripheral rim of the drum rubs, and a support element that is produced from sponge and that enables the felt to contact the peripheral rim of the drum with a certain prestress force. The sponge and the felt are attached to each other. More dense sponges used to provide air tightness increase the friction force as the said sponges enable the felt to press on the drum with a higher prestress force. If sponges with lower density are used to reduce the friction force, passage of air through the sponge cannot be prevented and hence a proper tightness cannot be achieved. In such cases where tightness cannot be provided, the humid air flows from the drum to the tub and causes the moisture to condense on all parts, including electrical components. This situation endangers the safety of the product.
The state of the art European Patent No. EP2850239 discloses the sealing of the outer surface of a low density sponge with an air-tight layer.
The aim of the present invention is the realization of a washer / dryer wherein an efficient tightness is provided between the tub and the drum.
The washer / dryer realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention, explicated in the first claim and the respective claims thereof, comprises a tub, a drum wherein the laundry is placed, that is disposed in the tub and that rotates around its axis in the tub, and a sealing element that is disposed between the peripheral rim of the drum and the tub. The sealing element of the present invention comprises a friction element against which the peripheral rim of the drum bears, at least two support elements that are disposed behind the friction element, and an insulation element that is disposed between the support elements and that prevents air and water passage by separating the support elements from each other.
By means of the present invention, a sealing element that provides tightness and has a low friction force is obtained. Thus, air and water tightness is provided efficiently at a low prestress force. By means of the said sealing element, an efficient air and water tightness is provided at a low prestress force. In other words, an improved tightness is provided with a lower prestress force. Since the prestress force is low, the loss of energy caused by friction is reduced. Thus, a washer / dryer with increased energy efficiency is obtained.
By means of the insulation element between the two support elements, a more efficient air and water tightness is provided, and the amount of water collected from the laundry is higher at the end of the drying process. Moreover, since the drying air is completely prevented from leaking into the tub, the moisture is prevented from condensing on the electrical or mechanical components in the tub, thus the safety of the product is improved.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the support elements are sponge. In this embodiment, the pore structure of the two support elements can be the same or different.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the insulation element can be a gasket, paint or coating. In all embodiments, the characteristic of the insulation element is that the same is produced from an air- and water-tight material.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the sealing element is disposed into a housing formed on the tub. Thus, the sealing element is enabled to remain between the housing and the peripheral rim of the drum.
A washer/dryer realized in order to attain the aim of the present invention is illustrated in the attached figures where

The elements in the figures are numbered as follows:
- Washer/dryer
- Tub
- Drum
- Sealing element
- Support element
- Friction element
- Insulation element
- Housing
- Peripheral rim
- Inlet
The washer / dryer (1) comprises a tub (2); a drum (3) wherein the laundry is placed, that is disposed in the tub (2) and that rotates around its axis; a sealing element (4) that is disposed between the peripheral rim (9) of the drum (3) and the tub (2); a friction element (6) against which the peripheral rim (9) of the drum (3) bears; at least two support elements (5) that are disposed behind the friction element (6), and at least one insulation element (7) that is disposed between the support elements (5) and that separates the support elements (5) from each other in radial direction in an air- and/or water-tight manner (Figure 1 and Figure 2).
The sealing element (4) is used between the rotating drum (3) and the stationary tub (2) to which the drum (3) is connected, so as to prevent the drying air passing through the drum (3) from leaking to the outside of the drum (3) and into the tub (2). When the drum (3) is rotating, the peripheral rim (9) of the drum (3) that extends toward the front or rear wall of the tub (2) contacts and applies pressure on the friction element (6) in radial, vertical and/or horizontal axis. The force applied by the peripheral rim (9) of the drum (3) on the friction element (6) is countered by the two support elements (5) to which the friction element (6) is attached, that remain between the friction element (6) and the tub (2), and that are fixed to each other in radial direction, thus the support elements (5) bend and enable the drum (3) to move easily. Since the insulation element (7) between the support elements (5) is produced from an air- and water-tight material, even if the drying air enters into a support element (5), the air is prevented from reaching the other support element (5) by the insulation element (7). Thus, an improved sealing is provided with a lower prestress force. Since a complete tightness is provided, an improved efficiency is obtained at the end of the drying process, and as the drying air cannot enter the tub (2), the moisture is prevented from condensing on the electrical and mechanical components inside the tub (2) and the safety of the washer / dryer (1) is improved.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the two support elements (5) are fixed to each other by means of the insulation element (7) in radial direction, and the friction element (6) is fixed on the support elements (5) so as to separate the peripheral rim of the drum (3) and the support elements (5) from each other. In this embodiment, while one edge of the insulation element (4) is neighbor to the peripheral rim (9) of the drum (3) through the friction element (6), the other edges thereof are neighbor to the tub (2) through the support elements (5). In this embodiment of the present invention, two support elements (5) are provided, that are disposed one on top of the other in the vertical plane so that the insulation element (7) remains therebetween. In this embodiment, the edge of the support elements (5) is covered by the friction element (6). In this case, the peripheral rim (9) of the drum (3) contacts the friction element (6) and is prevented from directly contacting the support elements (5) by means of the friction element (6).
In an embodiment of the present invention, the support elements (5) are produced from a material with low prestress force. Since the prestress force of the support elements (5) is low, friction-induced losses are prevented and thus the energy efficiency is improved. Moreover, the life of the friction element (6) is extended.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the support elements (5) can be produced from the same material or from two different materials. In the preferred embodiment of the present invention, sponge is used as the support element (5). In another version of this embodiment, the pore size of the support elements (5) can be the same or different. The support elements (5) provide low prestress force and thus keep the prestress force applied by the friction element (6) to the rotating drum (3) at minimum.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the friction element (6) is felt.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the insulation element (7) is a gasket placed between the two support elements (5).
In another embodiment of the present invention, the insulation element (7) is in the form of a film placed between the two support elements (5) and applied in the form of paint or coating. In this embodiment, the insulation element (7) forms a leak-proof layer between the two support elements (5).
In another embodiment of the present invention, the insulation element (7) is an adhesive. Thus, tightness is provided between the two support elements (5) and the support elements (5) are fixed to each other.
In an embodiment of the present invention, the washer / dryer (1) is a washer / dryer (1) with horizontal axis, and the sealing element (4) is placed between the front peripheral rim (9) of the drum (3) and the front wall of the tub (2) and/or between the rear peripheral rim (9) of the drum (3) and the rear wall of the tub (2).
In another embodiment of the present invention, the washer / dryer (1) comprises a housing (8) that is formed on the tub (2) and wherein the sealing element (4) is placed, and an inlet (10) that allows the peripheral rim (9) of the drum (3) to at least partially enter into the housing (8). In this embodiment, the wall of the tub (2) is bent so as to form a housing (8) in the form of horizontal "U", preferably rectangular. The sealing element (4) is disposed between the two opposite walls of the housing (8) and the support elements (5) contact the tub (2). The friction element (6) neighbor to the peripheral rim (9) of the drum (3) at least partially covers the inlet (10) of the housing (8).
