Description

ATTACHMENT ARRANGEMENT
This invention relates to an attachment arrangement, and in particular to an attachment arrangement whereby a cover, or part thereof, is attached to a frame of a polytunnel structure.
One form of polytunnel structure in common use comprises a series of rows of legs, and a series of hoop like cover support members, each of which is carried, at one end, by one of the legs of one of the rows, and at its opposite end by a corresponding leg of an adjacent one of the rows. A cover is supported by the cover support members and is secured in position using ropes, straps or the like that extend over the cover and are anchored to the ground or to the legs or other parts of the polytunnel structure.
In some applications, sections or regions of the cover are also secured in position using a re- entrant profile mounting member that extends longitudinally of the polytunnel structure, part of the cover extending into a channel defined by the mounting member, and being secured in position using a resilient, for example zig-zag shaped, clip member that it also located within the channel of the mounting member, the re-entrant nature of the channel and the resilience of the clip holding the clip, and hence part of the cover, within the channel and thereby securing the cover to the remainder of the polytunnel structure.
Whilst such arrangements operate adequately in securing the cover to the remainder of the structure, it has been found that the ropes or straps used to anchor the cover tend to rub or abrade the parts of the cover that extend over the outside of the mounting member. Such abrasion can result in damage to the cover material, for example resulting in the formation of holes therein. Clearly this is undesirable.
In some applications in which a zig-zag clip member is located within a channel of a mounting member, it is known to locate a protective member within the channel to avoid the clip member causing damage to the part of the cover located within the channel as, without the protective member, the clip may puncture or otherwise damage the cover.
Whilst the description hereinbefore relates to a specific type of polytunnel structure, it will be appreciated that the invention is not restricted to the specific arrangement described hereinbefore but rather is applicable to polytunnel structures of a wide range of designs.
It is an object of the invention to provide an attachment arrangement suitable for use in applications of the general type outlined hereinbefore in which the risk of damage to the cover material is reduced.
According to the present invention there is provided an attachment arrangement whereby a cover can be attached to a support frame, the attachment arrangement comprising a mounting member defining a re-entrant channel including a base, the mounting member being secured to the support frame and the cover including a section located within the channel extending across the base thereof, a resilient clip member located within the channel, extending across the base thereof and securing the said section of the cover within the channel, the attachment arrangement further comprising a protection member located within the channel between the cover and the clip member, the protection member extending across substantially the full width of the base and protecting the cover from damage by the clip member by preventing direct contact therebetween, wherein the protection member includes at least one projecting part that extends from the channel, overlying at least part of the cover located outside of the channel.
It will be appreciated that in such an arrangement, the projecting parts of the protection member reduce or prevent contact between the cover and ropes, straps or the like used to anchor the cover where those ropes, straps or the like extend over the mounting member. As a result, damage to the cover due to, for example, abrasion as a result of the ropes, straps or the like contacting the cover is reduced. The clip member conveniently takes the form of a wire or wire-like member, for example of zig-zag shape.
The invention further relates to a polytunnel structure incorporating an attachment arrangement of the type set out hereinbefore to secure a cover of the structure to a support frame thereof.
The invention will further be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view illustrating part of a polytunnel structure incorporating an attachment arrangement in accordance with an embodiment of the invention;
Figure 2 is a view to an enlarged scale illustrating the attachment arrangement; and
Figure 3 is an exploded view illustrating the attachment arrangement.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, a polytunnel structure 10 is illustrated that comprises a support frame 12 including legs 14 and hoop-like cover support members 16 over which a cover 18 extends, the cover being anchored by ropes, straps or the like 20 anchored, in this arrangement, to the ground. In the arrangement shown, the legs 14 and cover support members 16 are formed integrally with one another, but it will be appreciated that this need not always be the case, and that the invention is also applicable to other forms of polytunnel structure, for example to the arrangement outlined hereinbefore.
A mounting member 22 in the form of an elongate extrusion extends longitudinally of the polytunnel structure 10, being secured to the support members 16 thereof in a desired position. Whilst a range of fixing methods may be used to secure the mounting member 22 in position, it is conveniently secured in position using suitable clips or clamps (not shown) that extend around the support members 16 and through which bolts extend, the heads of which are located within a slot or channel 24 of the mounting member 22.
The mounting member 22 defines a re-entrant channel 26, in this case of generally trapezium shaped form that extends longitudinally of the mounting member 22. The cover 18 is folded in such a manner that a region 18a thereof extends into the channel 16, lying adjacent a base 26a of the channel 26. A resilient, zig-zag shaped wire clip 28 is located within the channel 26, the clip 28 sitting adjacent the base 26a of the channel 26 and serving to trap the region 18a of the cover 18 within the channel 26. The shape of the channel 26, and in particular the shapes of the sidewalls 26b thereof, serves to ensure that the clip 28 is retained adjacent the base 26a of the channel 26. It will be appreciated that the clip 28 will tend to sit at the widest part of the channel 26 which, due to the shape of the sidewalls 26b, is adjacent the base 26a.
A protection member 30 is also located within the channel 26. The protection member 30 takes the form of a length of a relatively heavy duty rubber-like polymer material. The protection member 30 is shaped to form a base 30a lying, in use, adjacent the base 26a of the channel 26, sides 30b lying adjacent the sidewalls 26b of the channel 26, and projecting parts 30c that project from the channel 26 and overlie parts of the mounting member 22 over which parts of the cover 18 extend. As illustrated, the protection member 30 is located between the cover 18 and the clip 28, preventing direct contact between the clip 28 and the cover 18, spreading the loads applied to the cover 18 by the clip 28 and thereby reducing the risk of the clip 28 causing damage to or piercing or puncturing the cover 18.
The projecting parts 30c of the protection member 30 serve to prevent the ropes, straps or the like 20 directly engaging the parts of the cover 18 that extend over the mounting member 22, the projecting parts 30c extending between the said parts of the cover 18 and the ropes, straps or the like 20. As a result, the risk of abrasion or other damage to the cover 18 occurring as a result of direct contact therebetween is reduced. As the projecting parts 30c are formed integrally with the remainder of the protection member 30 that is secured in position using the clip 28, it will be appreciated that the projecting parts 30c are accurately and firmly secured in position.
Whilst in the arrangement shown the projecting parts 30c are symmetrically arrange, this need not always be the case. Arrangements are possible in which one is of greater width than the other. Furthermore, arrangements are possible in which just one projecting part 30c is provided.
By avoiding or reducing the risk of damage to the cover 18, it will be appreciated that the working life of the cover 18 can be extended. By the use of a flexible material for the protection member 30, it will be appreciated that the shape adopted by the member 30 may automatically change to allow the member 30 to be used with a range of mounting members 22 of different shapes and sizes. If desired, the protection member 30 may be of non-uniform thickness across its width, being of increased thickness where, in use, it engages the clip 28 or ropes, straps or the like 20, and being of reduced thickness elsewhere to aid folding or bending thereof to allow the protection member 30 to take on the required shape and to aid insertion thereof into the channel 26.
Whilst a specific embodiment of the invention is described hereinbefore, it will be appreciated that a wide range of modifications and alterations may be made thereto without departing from the scope of the invention as defined by the appended claims. Furthermore, whilst described with reference to a specific design of polytunnel, it will be appreciated that the invention may be applied to other polytunnel designs and used in other applications.
