Description

STEERING WHEEL WITH BIOMETRIC SENSORS AND METHOD FOR CHECKING THE IDENTITY AND/OR THE PSYCHOPHYSICAL STATE OF A
DRIVER OF A VEHICLE USING SAID STEERING WHEEL
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a driving wheel for motor vehicles with biometric sensors that are suitable for detecting physical parameters of the driver.
PRIOR ART
Driving wheels with biometric sensors are known in the prior art.
In these driving wheels the sensors are obtained in the rim of the steering wheel in the shape, for example, of protrusions that are punctiform or also in the shape of belts, with which the hands of the driver come into contact when grasping the steering wheel.
Through these sensors it is possible to detect, for example, body temperature, blood pressure and heartbeat of the driver and send the detected data to a control device that can send alarm signals if it detects anomalous physical conditions of the driver or, also, progressively stop the vehicle.
Driving wheels of this type are disclosed, for example, in United States patents US8171820 and US8463352, United States patent applications US2010137702 and US2012006147 and in German patent application DE19545848.
The aforesaid driving wheels have the drawback that the sensors in the form of protrusions that protrude beyond the outer surface of the rim of the steering wheel are annoying for the person grasping the steering wheel by affecting the driving comfort of the vehicle.
Further, the construction of the steering wheel is complex inasmuch as it is necessary to provide a great number of sensors to have the certainty that said sensors are always present in the zone of the steering wheel grasped by the driver.
One object of the present invention is to provide a driving wheel provided with biometric sensors that do not have the above drawbacks.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a driving wheel that can also act as an antitheft device, by exploiting the biometric sensors.
The object of the invention is achieved with a driving wheel according to claim 1.
Owing to the invention it is possible to make a driving wheel provided with biometric sensors in which the outer surface of the rim is smooth, devoid of protrusions that can be annoying for the person grasping the steering wheel.
Further, the steering wheel according to the invention has a structure that is simplified and easier to make than driving wheels known from the prior art.
Lastly, the steering wheel according to the invention can perform a function of checking the psychophysical state of the driver and also act as an antitheft device.
The invention is disclosed below with reference to the attached drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a frontal view of a driving wheel according to the invention;
Figure 2 is an exploded side view of a driving wheel according to the invention.
A driving wheel 1 according to the invention comprises a central part 2, that is connected to the steering column of the steering of a vehicle and a rim 3, joined to the central part 2, by means of which the steering wheel 1 can be grasped and handled by the driver of the vehicle.
Said central part 2 and said rim 3 are defined in a base body 4 that constitutes the supporting structure of the steering wheel 1 and is clad by a pair of opposite half moulds 5, 6 that are fixed to the central body 4, so as to constitute the outer surface of the steering wheel 1, in particular of the rim 3.
The half moulds 5, 6 are made of press-moulded conductive plastics and act as sensors that are suitable for detecting pulses and, thus the frequency, of the heartbeat of the driver, when the latter grasps the steering wheel.
Conductive plastics that are usable for making the half moulds 5, 6 are, for example, materials known by the trade name LATISTAT, manufactured by the company LATI Industria Termoplastici S.p.A., which are conductive plastics based on polystyrene, acrylonitrile butiadene styrene and high or low density polyethylene, polypropylene copolymer, ethylene vinyl acetate, EPM polypropylene, homopolymer polypropylene, nylon, reinforced polycarbonate with glass fibres.
Other conductive plastics that are usable are, for example, materials known by the trade name LATISHIELD, manufactured by the company LATI Industria Termoplastici S.p.A., which are conductive plastics with electromagnetic field shielding properties based on acrylonitrile butiadene styrene, nylon, polycarbonate, modified polypropylene oxide.
Further usable plastics are, for example, materials known by the trade name LATIOHM, manufactured by the company LATI Industria Termoplastici S.p.A., which are semiconductor plastics with antistatic properties based on acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, polyamide, polyoxymethylene, polybutylene terephthalate, polyphenylene sulphide, polyethersulphone, polycarbonate, polyether ether ketone, and modified polyphenyl ether. On the central part 2 of the steering wheel 1 a first biometric sensor 7 and a second biometric sensor 8 are further arranged that are suitable for detecting the fingerprint of a finger of the driver, for example the thumb, and the heartbeat thereof.
On the central part 2 of the steering wheel an interface means is further provided, for example a digital display 9, for example of the touchscreen type, by means of which the driver of the vehicle can receive information or alarm signals and can send data or instructions to control means of the vehicle, for example an electronic control unit.
On the central body 4 of the steering wheel 1 electric contacts (which are not shown) are provided for connecting electrically the half moulds 5, 6 to the control unit of the vehicle, such that signals received from said half moulds 5 and 6, for example signals that represent the frequency of the heartbeat of the driver, can be sent to the control unit of the vehicle.
When a driving wheel according to the invention is first used, via the display the driver will be asked to insert a password, which is supplied by the manufacturer and is subsequently modifiable by the user to access the control unit of the vehicle.
After accessing the control unit of the vehicle, the driver will be asked to rest his thumbs on the first biometric sensor 7 and on the second biometric sensor 8 to detect and store in the control unit the fingerprint of a thumb and the frequency of the heartbeat. The frequency of the heartbeat has to be detected when the driver is in normal psychophysical conditions and at rest, because it will be used by the control unit as a parameter of comparison to monitor the psychophysical conditions of the driver and detect further alterations that may be dangerous for driving the vehicle.
The fingerprint of the thumb is used by the control unit as an antitheft parameter to enable the driving of the vehicle and thus allow the vehicle to be switched on only by a person whose fingerprint has been stored in the control unit.
It is possible to store in the electronic control unit the fingerprints of several people whom it is desired to enable to driving the vehicle and the respective frequencies of the heartbeat. When an enabled driver desires to drive the vehicle, the enabled driver must first insert the starter key and switch on the control panel. At this point, the control unit will generate, by the display 9 a sound signal, following which the driver has to rest a thumb on one of the biometric sensors 7, 8, within a preset time, for example 5-6 seconds. The biometric sensor will detect the fingerprint of the driver and will send the fingerprint to the control unit, which will compare the fingerprint with those stored and will permit the engine to start if the detected fingerprint corresponds to one of the stored fingerprints.
If, after the preset time from the emission of the acoustic signal has elapsed, the driver has not rested the thumb on one of the biometric sensors 7, 8, the control unit will emit a new acoustic signal to request the driver to rest the thumb on one of said sensors again.
If, after the emission of a third acoustic signal, the user has not rested the thumb on a biometric sensor within the preset time, this will be interpreted by the control unit as an indication of an altered psychophysical conditions of the driver and the control unit will prevent the vehicle starting for a preset time, for example 20-30 minutes, after which the driver can again attempt to start the vehicle following the procedure indicated above.
After the vehicle has been started up and during travel of the vehicle, the frequency of the heartbeat of the driver is constantly detected by the rim 3 of the steering wheel, the surface of which is made, as disclosed previously, of conductive plastics.
The frequency of the heartbeat detected by the rim of the steering wheel is transmitted to the control unit via the electric contacts provided on the base body 4 of the steering wheel 1 and is compared by the control unit with the stored pulse rate at rest. If a difference is detected in the pulse rate that is greater or less than a preset maximum value, for example equal to 15-20% more or less than the stored pulse rate at rest, the control unit generates, through the display 9, an acoustic alarm signal to warn the driver that a potentially dangerous change to the psychophysical conditions of the driver is occurring. In addition to the acoustic signal, also a visual signal can be generated, for example flashing of the display 9.
If the change to the pulse rate persists beyond a preset time interval, for example beyond 30 seconds, the control unit intervenes to cause an emergency stop of the vehicle, progressively decreasing the speed thereof to the stop and activating the front and rear direction indicators.
After the emergency stop of the vehicle, the control unit will not permit the vehicle to restart if the value of the frequency of the heartbeat of the driver has not normalised.
The control unit emits the acoustic alarm signal, possibly accompanied by a visual signal, also if the driver takes his or her hands off the steering wheel for a further interval of preset time, for example for more than 2-3 seconds. If the driver does not again grasp the steering wheel within a very short time, for example within 1-2 seconds of the emission of the alarm signal, this could indicate a critical psychophysical condition of the driver, for example sudden illness. The control unit will thus perform an emergency stop of the vehicle.
Removing the hands from steering wheel does not cause the emission of the acoustic alarm signal if the vehicle is stationary, for example is waiting at traffic lights.
The steering wheel according to the invention is particularly advantageous because it can perform both an antitheft function by detecting a fingerprint of the driver and comparing the fingerprint with fingerprints stored in a control unit, and a function of checking the psychophysical conditions of the driver, as explained previously.
