Definitions
- the present invention relates to a container housing a wrapped bundle of consumer goods having a wrapper with a shaped line of weakness.
- the invention finds particular application as a container for elongate smoking articles, such as cigarettes.
- Cisid articles such as cigarettes and cigars are commonly packaged in rigid hinge-lid containers having a box and a lid connected to the box about a hinge line extending across the back wall of the container.
- Such hinge-lid containers are typically constructed from one-piece laminar cardboard blanks. In use, the lid is pivoted about the hinge line to open the container and so gain access to a bundle of smoking articles housed in the box.
- the bundle of smoking articles housed in the box is typically wrapped in a wrapper of metallised paper, metal foil or other flexible sheet material.
- the inner liner will typically be a rectangular sheet of material that is folded around the bundle of smoking articles and then folded shut at the top and bottom ends, for example, using an envelope fold. Each rectangular sheet for forming an inner liner will typically be cut from a continuous roll of the sheet material.
- a consumer typically removes and discards a perforated upper portion of the inner liner upon first opening the hinge-lid container.
- the inner liner typically has a relatively plain shape and appearance and the perforated upper portion of the inner liner is typically substantially rectangular or trapezoidal in shape and extends below the top edge of the front wall of the box.
- a container having a wrapped bundle with a novel wrapper that is adapted to provide improved integration of the wrapper with the design of the housing of the container. It would be further desirable to provide such a container with a wrapper that is adapted such that the amount of material that must be removed and discarded by the consumer upon first opening of the container is minimised.
- a container of consumer goods comprising: a housing comprising a box portion having a box front wall and a lid portion moveable between an open position and a closed position, the lid portion depending from a hinge line extending across a back of the housing, wherein the box portion has a top edge defining an edge of an opening through which consumer goods can be removed from the container when the lid portion is in the open position; and one or more consumer goods wrapped in a wrapper and contained within the housing.
- the wrapper includes a line of weakness extending across a front face of the wrapper and defining at least one side of a detachable tab portion of the wrapper that is removable from the rest of the wrapper, wherein the distance between the line of weakness and the top edge of the box front wall in a direction orthogonal to the top edge of the box front wall varies by no more than 10 mm (millimetres) along the length of the line of weakness.
- the terms "front”, “back”, “top”, “bottom” and “side” refer to the relative positions of containers according to the invention and components thereof when the bundle is in an upright position such that the consumer goods will be removed from the top end. When describing containers according to the present invention, these terms are used irrespective of the orientation of the container being described.
- the line of weakness provided in the wrapper of the wrapped bundle is adapted such that it has a shape that substantially follows the shape of the top edge of the box portion along at least the front of the container, within a tolerance of 10 mm. This means that when measured along the length of the top edge of the box front wall, the maximum distance between the line of weakness and the top edge of the box front wall is no more than 10 mm greater than the minimum distance.
- the "orthogonal" distance between the top edge of the box front wall and the line of weakness refers to the distance measured perpendicular to the top edge of the box front wall, in the plane of the box front wall. Where the top edge of the box front wall is curved, the distance between the top edge and the line of weakness at any point along the curved portion of the top edge is measured perpendicularly to a tangent of the curve at that point.
- the line of weakness preferably extends across substantially the full width of the box front wall, as described below. However, in certain embodiments the line of weakness may extend across only part of the width of the box front wall. In such embodiments, it is only possible to measure the orthogonal distance between the line of weakness and the top edge of the box portion along that part of the width of the box front wall, rather than along the entire top edge.
- the detachable tab portion itself is also provided with a novel shape after removal from the remainder of the wrapper.
- the shaped line of weakness enables the wrapper to be better integrated with the design of the container and to reflect the shaping and construction of the box portion of the container to provide an improved impression to the consumer.
- Both the shape of the top edge of the box front wall and the line of weakness can advantageously be customised to provide novel means of communicating with the consumer, for example, to reflect the branding of the consumer goods.
- the shaped line of weakness also enables the detachable tab portion to have a smaller area compared to that of the corresponding portion of wrappers of conventional containers of this type, so that a smaller amount of the wrapper is removed and discarded by the consumer prior to use of the consumer goods.
- the shaped line of weakness additionally enables the wrapper to provide improved protection to the consumer goods compared to wrappers of conventional packs after removal of the detachable tab portion, as the detachable tab portion is smaller.
- a shaped line of weakness advantageously requires minimal modification to the existing manufacturing process for producing the wrapped bundles.
- the provision of the shaped line of weakness should not typically affect the method or apparatus used for wrapping the wrapper around the bundle of consumer goods.
- the variation in the separation of the top edge of the box front wall and the line of weakness is preferably minimised so that the line of weakness follows the shape of the top of the box front wall as closely as possible.
- the variation in the distance between the line of weakness and the top edge of the box front wall is less than 8 mm, more preferably less than 5 mm.
- the distance between the line of weakness and the top edge of the box front wall in a direction orthogonal to the top edge of the box front wall is substantially constant along at least a portion of the top edge of the box front wall.
- the distance between the line of weakness and the top edge of the box front wall in a direction orthogonal to the top edge of the box front wall is substantially constant along at least 50 percent of the length of the top edge of the box front wall, more preferably along at least 75 percent.
- the distance between the line of weakness and the top edge of the box front wall in a direction orthogonal to the top edge of the box front wall is substantially constant along the entire length of the top edge of the box front wall, so that the line of weakness exactly follows the shape of the top edge of the box front wall.
- the requirement for the distance between the line of weakness and the top edge of the box front wall to be “substantially constant” should take into account any variation in the relative positioning of the line of weakness and the top edge of the box front wall as a result of expected machine tolerances, which will typically be about 2 mm to 3 mm for a conventional size container of smoking articles. This means that the measured orthogonal distance will be substantially constant along the top edge of the box front wall to within 2 mm to 3 mm.
- the line of weakness in the wrapper of containers according to the invention may be provided at a distance from the top edge of the box front wall, below or above the top edge.
- the distance between the line of weakness and the top edge of the box front wall in a direction orthogonal to the top edge of the box front wall is preferably between 0.5 mm and 5 mm along substantially the entire length of the top edge of the box front wall.
- the line of weakness is provided above the top edge of the box front wall whereby a portion of the wrapper between the line of weakness and the top edge of the box front wall defines a first wrapper portion that extends above the top edge of the box front wall.
- the first wrapper portion will therefore protrude above the top edge of the box front wall with a top edge that substantially follows the shape of the top edge of the box front wall. The first wrapper portion is therefore visible above the box front wall when the lid portion is in the open position.
- This arrangement may advantageously provide improved protection to the consumer goods within the container and may help to retain the freshness of the consumer goods after opening of the wrapper. Furthermore, by providing the line of weakness above the top edge of the box front wall, the area of the detachable tab portion will typically be reduced compared to a conventional tab portion, which extends below the top edge of the box front wall. The amount of wrapper material that must be removed and discarded by the consumer is therefore advantageously reduced.
- the first wrapper portion may advantageously be provided with one or more printed indicia on the external surface. Such indicia remain visible to the consumer after removal of the detachable tab portion of the wrapper.
- the indicia may be the same as indicia provided on other surfaces of the container, or different.
- the first wrapper portion may be provided with a texture, colour or pattern that is distinct from any textures, colours or patterns used on the other external surfaces of the container. Any indicia or graphics on the first wrapper portion may advantageously be used to complement the shape of the line of weakness and the top edge of the box front wall. In this way, the consumer's attention can be further drawn towards the first wrapper portion.
- the line of weakness is provided below the top edge of the box front wall.
- the remaining portion of the wrapper will be less visible to the consumer after removal of the detachable tab portion.
- the edge of the detachable tab portion defined by the line of weakness will, however, still reflect the shape of the top edge of the box front wall. This will provide a surprising visual effect to the consumer since the shape will be clearly distinct from the conventional rectangular or trapezoidal shape of a detachable tab portion.
- the shaping of the detachable tab portion further provides an impression of a clean tear in the wrapper to provide an improved perception of quality.
- the line of weakness in the wrapper of containers according to the invention may be provided proximate the top edge of the box front wall, with a minimal separation between the line of weakness and the top edge.
- the distance between the line of weakness and the top edge of the box front wall in a direction orthogonal to the top edge of the box front wall is preferably less than 0.5 mm along substantially the entire length of the line of weakness, taking into account machine tolerances as described above.
- the line of weakness and the top edge of the box front wall therefore substantially coincide with each other so that after removal of the detachable tab portion of the wrapper, the remaining free edge of the wrapper substantially coincides with the corresponding free edge of the box front wall at the opening of the container.
- the line of weakness may include portions that are provided above the top edge of the box front wall in combination with portions that are provided proximate the top edge of the box front wall, portions that are provided below the top edge of the box front wall, or both.
- the portion of the line of weakness that is provided above the top edge of the box front wall is positioned towards the centre of the top edge of the box front wall, with the portions that are proximate or below the top edge being provided towards the corners of the box portion.
- the line of weakness in the wrapper defines an edge of the detachable tab portion of the wrapper.
- the detachable tab portion comprises a panel of the wrapper top wall, at least a part of the wrapper front wall depending from the top wall panel and optionally, at least a part of the wrapper side walls.
- the line of weakness comprises at least a front portion extending across a front face of the wrapped consumer goods, wherein the front portion of the line of weakness is shaped to substantially follow the shape of the top edge of the box front wall.
- the front portion of the line of weakness extends across substantially the full width of the wrapper front wall.
- the detachable tab portion therefore has a width substantially corresponding to the width of the wrapped bundle of consumer goods and preferably also the internal width of the box portion of the container. This is in contrast to the arrangement of a conventional wrapper, in which the detachable tab portion typically has a significantly smaller width than the box front wall.
- the extended width of the detachable tab portion in containers of the present invention may advantageously provide a more uniform appearance along the top edge of the wrapper after the removal of the detachable tab portion.
- the line of weakness preferably further comprises opposed side portions extending from the front portion across opposed side faces of the wrapped consumer goods.
- the side portions of the line of weakness are shaped to substantially follow the shape of the top edges of the respective box side walls.
- the line of weakness therefore extends around the sides of the wrapped consumer goods such that the detachable tab portion defined by the line of weakness is provided with front and side panels. This arrangement will typically increase the size of the opening provided upon removal of the detachable tab portion compared to a conventional wrapper, thereby facilitating removal of the consumer goods within the container.
- the extension of the line of weakness around the sides of the wrapper additionally increases the visual impact of the shaped line of weakness.
- the side portions of the line of weakness preferably extend across substantially the full width of the side walls of the wrapper.
- the line of weakness will typically follow the shape of the top edges of the box portion along substantially the entire free edge of the box portion at the opening to the container.
- the box portion of containers according to the present invention comprises an inner frame that protrudes above the top edge of the corresponding walls of the box portion.
- the top edge of the inner frame front wall provides the top edge of the box front wall as defined above so that the shape of the line of weakness substantially follows the shape of the top edge of the inner frame front wall.
- the line of weakness is provided in the form of at least one perforation line.
- Perforation lines can be applied to the wrapper using well known apparatus and techniques. Different types of perforation may be used to alter the appearance of the line of weakness or the force required to break the wrapper along the line of weakness. Different shapes, sizes and separations of the cuts forming the perforation line may also be used, if desired.
- the line of weakness may be provided in the form of a score line, along which the thickness of the material forming the wrapper has been reduced either through compression or removal of a part of the material along the score line. It may be advantageous to provide a score line in embodiments in which the wrapper provides a barrier layer to protect the consumer goods within the container.
- the wrapper of the containers according to the invention may further comprise one or more additional lines of weakness extending between the line of weakness across the front face of the wrapper and the free edge of the detachable tab portion.
- additional lines of weakness therefore typically extend from the line of weakness up the front face of the wrapper and across the top face of the wrapper to the edge of the detachable tab portion.
- the additional lines of weakness enable the progressive removal of different sections of the detachable tab portion. Where a plurality of additional lines of weakness are provided, the additional lines of weakness may each have a different tear strength, making it easier to remove certain sections of the tab than others.
- the wrapper of the containers according to the invention is preferably formed from a single laminar blank of a suitable sheet material to which the line of weakness has been applied.
- the wrapper can be formed, for example, from metallised paper, metal foil, coated paper, uncoated paper, other flexible sheet material or combinations thereof.
- the wrapper can be formed from a laminate of a metallised polyethylene film and a liner material.
- the liner material may be a supercalendered glassine paper.
- the wrapper material may be provided with a print-receptive top coating.

- the container may be formed from any suitable materials including, but not limited to, cardboard, paperboard, plastic, metal, or combinations thereof.
- the housing is formed from one or more folded laminar cardboard blanks and preferably, the cardboard has a weight of between about 100 g/m 2 (grams per square metre) and about 350 g/m 2 .
- the outer wrapper is a transparent polymeric film of, for example, high or low density polyethylene, polypropylene, oriented polypropylene, polyvinylidene chloride, cellulose film, or combinations thereof and the outer wrapper is applied in a conventional manner.
- the outer wrapper may include a tear tape.
- the outer wrapper may be printed with images, consumer information or other data.
- containers according to the invention may be in the shape of a rectangular parallelepiped, with right-angled longitudinal and right-angled transverse edges.
- the container may comprise one or more rounded longitudinal edges, rounded transverse edges, bevelled longitudinal edges or bevelled transverse edges, or combinations thereof.
- the container according to the invention may comprise, without limitation: one or two longitudinal rounded or bevelled edges on the front wall, and/or one or two longitudinal rounded or bevelled edges on the back wall;
- the bevelled edge has a width of between about 1 mm and about 10 mm, preferably between about 2 mm and about 6 mm.
- the container may comprise a double bevel formed by three parallel creasing or scoring lines that are spaced such that two distinct bevels are formed on the edge of the container.
- the container may have a non-rectangular transversal cross section, for example polygonal such as triangular or hexagonal, semi-oval or semi-circular.
- Containers according to the invention find particular application as packs for elongate smoking articles such as, for example, cigarettes, cigars or cigarillos.
- the consumer goods within the container comprise a plurality of smoking articles.
- containers according to the invention may be designed for different numbers of conventional size, king size, super-king size, slim or super- slim cigarettes.
- other consumer goods may be housed inside the containers.
