Description
Improvements in or relating to hair styling products The present invention relates to hair styling products.
Many different hair styling products are known, for creating a range of different effects when styling the hair. One example of a styling need is for products which increase the apparent volume of the hair. These generally create additional volume or "body" to the hair. They are often called volumisers. The process and effect may also be referred to as "plumping", or by various other alternative terms.
Examples of the present invention provide a hair styling product comprising an aerosol delivery system, the aerosol delivery system containing a charge of a hair styling composition and a propellant, and the aerosol delivery system being operable to deliver the charge by releasing the charge from the system; and wherein the composition comprises: silica silylate; and
a hair colourant
The hair colourant may comprise one or more iron oxides. The hair colourant may be in powder form. The hair colourant may form up to 4% of the charge or up to 2% of the charge, in each case by weight prior to delivery. The hair colourant may be present at 1 % or less of the charge by weight, prior to delivery.
The silica silylate may be in powder form. The particle size of the silica silylate prior to inclusion in the composition may be substantially wholly within the range of 13 to 20 microns. At least 95% of the particles may be within the range of 13 to 20 microns. The particle size distribution may be 13 to 20 microns.
The silica silylate may form up to 5% of the charge, or up to 2.2% or at least 1 % of the charge, in each case by weight, prior to delivery.
The composition may further comprise talcum powder. The talcum powder may form up to 8% of the charge or up to 5.5% of the charge or be in the range of 2.7% to 5.5% of the charge, in each case by weight, prior to delivery.
The composition may further comprise fumed silica. The fumed silica may be in powder form. The fumed silica may form up to 1 % of the charge or up to 0.55% or up to 0.3% of the charge by weight, prior to delivery.
The composition may further comprise one or more volatile solvents. The solvents may consist of or include ethanol and/or pentane. The volatile solvents may form the remainder of the composition.
The composition may comprise a film forming material. The film forming material may be a resin. The film forming material may be a silicone resin. The film forming material may be polymethylsilsesquioxane. The film forming material may form up to 2% of the charge, by weight, prior to delivery.
The propellant may form up to 90% of the charge or up to 80% of the charge, or up to 75% of the charge or up to 50% of the charge, or around 45% of the charge, in each case by weight, prior to delivery. Examples of the present invention also provide a hair styling product comprising:
an aerosol delivery system; and
a hair styling composition which includes at least one volumiser;
wherein the or one of the volumisers is silica silylate.
In this example, the hair styling composition and the charge in the aerosol delivery system may have any of the features or combinations of features of the hair styling composition and charge defined above. Examples of the present invention will now be described in more detail, by way of example only, and with reference to the sole drawing (Fig. 1 ), which is a schematic diagram of an aerosol delivery system containing a charge of a hair styling composition and a propellant. Examples
A hair styling composition comprises silica silylate and a colourant. We have found that the hair styling composition is suitable for delivery by an aerosol delivery system.
The drawing illustrates an aerosol delivery system 10 which contains a charge including a hair styling composition 12 and a propellant 14. The charge is contained in the system 10 prior to delivery to the hair of a user by the aerosol delivery system 10. The composition 12 will be described below. The hair styling composition 12 includes at least one volumiser. The volumiser, or one of the volumisers, is silica silylate. In the examples being described, the composition 12 also includes a hair colourant.
The propellant 14, may be an LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) propellant blend or an alternative. Alternatives include a hydrofluorocarbon such as HFC152A, or a di-methyl ether (DME). A manually controllable valve arrangement at 16 allows a user to control the release of the charge 12, 14, through a nozzle 18. The propellant 14 causes the composition 12, which is initially liquid in form, to be delivered in the form of an aerosol 20.
The amount of each ingredient in the composition 12 can be expressed as a percentage of the charge by weight, prior to delivery. Accordingly, the
percentage value will be influenced by the amount of propellant in the charge. We envisage the propellant ranging from about 45% to about 75% of the charge, by weight, prior to delivery. In a first example, the colourant comprises an iron oxide or a blend of one or more iron oxides, according to the colour required. The colourant can conveniently be delivered to the hair in powder form. In this example, the colourant forms up to 4% of the charge by weight, prior to delivery to the hair. Alternatively, the colourant may form up to 2% of the charge by weight, prior to delivery or may be present at 1 % or less of the charge by weight prior to delivery. Various pigments or other forms of hair colourant could alternatively be used.
The silica silylate is also in powder form in the composition. The silica silylate is present to act as a volumiser. In this example, the silica silylate has a particle size distribution of 13 to 20 microns. "Particle size distribution" has the following meaning herein. Particle sizes in a body of powder material will typically follow a Normal distribution. The range of sizes (centred at the peak of the Normal distribution) which contains 95% of the population is here called the "particle size distribution". Thus, in a powder having a particle size distribution of 13 to 20 microns, 95% of the powder particles will have a size in the range between 13 and 20 microns.
An example of a commercially available silica silylate powder having a particle size distribution of 13 to 20 microns is a product called DC VM 2270 available from Dow Corning Corporation.
In this example, the silica silylate forms up to 5% by weight of the charge, prior to delivery to the hair. In other examples, the silica silylate forms up to 2.2% by weight of the charge, prior to delivery. We expect that silica silylate will form at least 1 % by weight of the charge, prior to delivery.
Other materials can also be incorporated in the composition. For example, talcum powder and/or fumed silica powder can be incorporated. These materials, or alternative materials, may further improve the volumising effect of the composition and/or the ease of application to the hair. The talcum powder may form up to 8% of the charge or up to 5.5% of the charge or be in the range of 2.75% to 5.5% of the charge, in each case by weight prior to delivery to the hair. The fumed silica powder may form up to 1 % of the charge or up to 0.55% of the charge by weight or up to 0.3% of the charge by weight, in each case prior to delivery to the hair.
In this example, the remainder of the composition is provided by volatile solvents. Examples include ethanol and/or pentane. The other components of the composition are mixed into the volatile solvents to create a blended liquid phase for application to the hair when released from the aerosol delivery system 10.
In this example, the propellant forms around 45% of the charge by weight, prior to delivery to the hair. In alternatives, the propellant may form up to 90% of the charge or up to 80% of the charge or up to 50% of the charge, in each case by weight, prior to delivery to the hair.
The formulation of one example charge can therefore be tabulated as follows:
Ingredient % By weight
Silica silylate 2.2%
Colourant (e.g. iron oxide ; pigment) 2%
Talcum powder (if present) 5.5%
Fumed silica powder (if present) 0.55%
Volatile solvents Remainder
Propellant 45%
We have found that the hair styling product can be enhanced by including a film forming material such as a resin. This is used to form a film on the hair and helps to reduce the transfer of the colour pigments onto the hands and clothing during use. One example is a silicone resin film former. Polymethylsilsesquioxane may be used. Polymethylsilsesquioxane is available under the trade name Silform Flexible Resin from Momentive Performance Materials Inc.
The resin may be incorporated at a level of up to 2% of the charge, by weight, prior to delivery. The presence of the resin has been found to provide a smooth silky feel and repels water.
Resin may be incorporated in the formulation tabulated above, for example at 2% of the charge, by weight, prior to delivery.
A second example formulation includes a higher propellant content than the formulation tabulated above, and also includes a resin, as just described. The formulation of this second example charge can therefore be tabulated as follows:
Ingredient % By weight
Silica silylate 1 .1 %
Colourant (e.g. iron oxide ; pigment) Up to 1 %
Talcum powder (if present) Up to 5.5%
Fumed silica powder (if present) 0.3%
Resin 1 %
Volatile solvents Remainder
Propellant 75%
In a further alternative, the resin may be omitted from this example. Concluding Comments
We have found that the inclusion levels and particle sizes described in relation to the Example, particularly for the silica silylate, reduce to an acceptable level the risk of blockage in the system 10, particularly in the nozzle 18. In particular, we have found that using particles which are unduly large or have wide or uneven size distribution can cause blockage in the valve 16, whereas particles which are too small may create respiratory distress for the user if inhaled during use, leading to deposition in the lungs of the user. We have also found that the talcum powder and fumed silica powder also help prevent the powders of the composition 12 from compacting into the bottom of the system 10, such as during storage. If the powders become compacted or form a cake in the system 10, it may become difficult to homogenise the composition 12 again, before use, even by vigourous shaking. If the composition 12 is not adequately homogenised, it may form agglomerated particles which risk blocking the valve 16, or may be incapable of being delivered through the valve 16 at all. Furthermore, it is desirable not to require a significant amount of shaking by the user, because this will lead to uncertainty in the performance of the system 10 and may therefore affect the desirability of the product in the perception of the user. We have found that the use of an aerosol delivery system 10 allows for easy and efficient release of the composition 12 for delivery to the hair of the user. The user can readily direct the composition 12 to the desired target location. This results in less mess being created, and in less wastage of the composition 12.
We have found that the propellant 14 and the volatile solvents of the composition 12 provide an aerosol of fine droplet size, which in turn results in a dry feel to the composition, once applied to the hair. Once applied, the silica silylate will provide a coating on individual hairs, thus creating a volumising effect. The silica silylate can be aimed at the hair cuticle to provide a light coating at the cuticle but without adding significant extra weight to the hair (which would negate the volumising effect). The talcum powder and/or fumed silica powder (if present) will further enhance this volumising effect.
When the composition is delivered to the hair, particularly to the hair cuticle as described above, the colourant (iron oxide or an alternative) is simultaneously delivered to the same position and can therefore create a colouring effect for the hair. Although the natural colour of the silica silylate and other powder ingredients is white or pale, we have found that the ingredients and inclusion levels described above will create a suitable volumising effect without unacceptably reducing the colouring effect of the colourant. Consequently, the composition simultaneously creates volume or "body" for the hair, while also providing a temporary colouring effect, particularly near the roots of the hair, providing helpful cosmetic effects for hair which is regrowing (after illness, for example) or greying.
Variations and modifications can be made to the compositions and products described above, as has been indicated. Additional materials could be included for various cosmetic effects. For example, extracts of collagen and/or keratin could be included for strengthening and/or conditioning the hair.
Whilst endeavouring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
