Abstract

The present invention involves a girth (1) for a saddle, including a longitudinal band comprising a protrusion (7) in the vicinity of the longitudinal centre, which, while the girth is in use, will lie against and put pressure on the horse's sternum. Through the pressure of the protrusion on the horse's sternum the horse is incited to use it's back in a better manner and/or carry over the withers and/or develop an improved movement mechanism. This may help the rider in guiding the horse to walk correctly.

Description

GIRTH AND SADDLE WITH SIMILAR GIRTH
The present invention involves a girth for a saddle, including a longitudinal band comprising: an inner surface which is designed to lie against the sternum of a horse in use and
attachment means on both longitudinal end sections of the girth for harnessing of the girth to a saddle.
In itself, such a girth is already known. It is an aim of the invention to provide an alternative and/or improved girth. In particular, it is a goal of the invention to modify the girth according to the prior art in such a manner that the girth will also assist with the control over the movements of a horse.
Thereto the inner surface of the girth according to the invention has been provided with a protrusion in the vicinity of the longitudinal centre, which, while the girth is in use, will lie against and put pressure on the horse's sternum.
Through the pressure of the protrusion on the horse's sternum the horse is incited to use it's back in a better manner and/or carry over the withers and/or develop an improved movement mechanism. This may help the rider in guiding the horse to walk correctly.
Preferably, the protrusion will have sufficient hardness to enable it to exert the intended pressure . This hardness can be chosen as desired .
In an embodiment of the girth according to the invention the protrusion has an oblong shape, and stretches out perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the band. In this way the protrusion will be parallel to the horse's sternum and be able to apply said pressure. In particular, the pressure exerted on the chest of the horse will be restricted to the sternum and no pressure is exerted to areas around it, so that the horse's movement shall only be influenced in a good and/or efficient manner.
In practice, the protrusion has a width of between 2 - 5 cm. Such a width corresponds with the general width of a horse's sternum and can be adjusted to fit the horse for which a girth will be designed. In practice the protrusion has a length of between 3 - 10 cm.
In another embodiment of the girth according to the invention the band displays a wider area in the vicinity of the longitudinal centre of the band, whereby the protrusion is positioned, at least partially, in the wider area. When the girth is used, the wider area will lie up against the horse's chest, through which the protrusion will apply pressure to the horse's sternum.
Preferably, the middle section of the girth including the wider area will be thicker than the arms of the bands of the girth which extend from the wider area. This ensures that the protrusion which is located in the wider and thicker area will lie perfectly against the horse's sternum.
For example, the middle area of the girth could be between 0,5 and 1,5 cm thicker than the outstretching arms of the band.
The wider area may essentially have the shape of a semi-circle or an oval. Such a shape follows the contours of a horse's chest.
In yet another embodiment of the girth according to the invention the wider area, when viewed in cross section is slightly bent to the inside relative to the main plane of the band. Such a bend has the advantage that while bending the girth around the chest of the horse the wider part will be bending in the direction of the horse's sternum, thus forcing the widened part to lie smoothly against the horse's chest and assuring that the protrusion will properly apply the desired pressure against the sternum. In yet another embodiment of the girth according to the invention the arms of the band are bent in the main plane of the band essentially in the direction of the widened part. Such bent arms have the advantage that, while bending the girth around the chest of the horse, the wider part will be bending in the direction of the horse's sternum, thus forcing the widened part to lie smoothly against the horse's chest and assuring that the protrusion will properly apply the desired pressure against the sternum.
Further, the invention consists of a saddle, comprising a girth according to one of the claims 1 - 12 that is detachably connected with the saddle.
The invention will be explained in detail through figures, whereby:
Figure 1 shows the girth according to the invention attached to the chest of a horse; Figure 2 shows a vertical longitudinal cross section of the horse shown in figure 1; Figure 3 shows a perspective view of the inner surface of the girth shown in figure 1; Figure 4 shows a cross section in transverse direction through the middle of the girth shown in figure 3;
Figure 5 shows a top view of the inner surface of the girth shown in figure 1;
The figures 6 through 8 show cross sections in transverse direction through the girth shown in figure 5, respectively in the area of the arms of the girth, in the area of the widened part of the girth and in the area of the protrusion of the girth;
Figure 9 shows a top view of the outer surface of the girth shown in figure 1;
Figure 10 shows a cross section in the longitudinal direction through the widened part of the girth.
Figures 1 and 2 display a girth 1 according to the invention in use. The girth 1 comprises a long band 2, which is placed around the chest 3 of a horse 4. The band 2 comprises an inner surface, which is defined as the surface of the band 2 which in use lies against the horse 4. Therefore, in figure 1 only the outer surface of the band 2 is visible. At both longitudinal end sections the band 2 has attachment means comprising buckles 5 with which the girth is detachably connected to a saddle 6. These buckles 5 have been attached to the outer surface of the band 2, so they will not press against the horse 4 itself and are easily accessed.
As shown in figure 2, the inner surface of the girth 1 comprises a protrusion 7 in the vicinity of a longitudinally central part of the band 2. When the girth 1 is used this protrusion 7 exerts pressure on the sternum 8 of the horse 4/whereby the movement of the horse 4 is influenced .
The figures 3-9 show the girth 1 in more detail. This shows that the girth 1 has a central middle part 11 comprising a wider area 9 that is positioned essentially in the longitudinal centre of the girth 1. The wider area 9 consists essentially of a semicircle. In the central part of the wider area 9 there is a protrusion 7, comprising an essentially oblong shape. The protrusion 7 lies mainly transverse to the longitudinal direction of the girth 1, so that it lies parallel to the sternum 8 of the horse 4 when the girth 1 is in use. See also figure 2.
The protrusion 7 has a selected hardness , which is able to apply the correct pressure to the sternum 8. The protrusion 7 has a width b of about 2 - 5 cm and a length L of about 3 - 10 cm. It should be noted that the width and/or the length of the protrusion 7 are not limited to these values, but that the width and length can be chosen, for example to suit the needs of the horse for which the girth 1 has to be used.
The central middle part 11 of the girth 1, comprising the wider area 9 is thicker than the arms 10 which stretch out from it on either side. The three different thicknesses of the girth 1 are clearly shown in figures 6 - 8. These show that the arms 10 are relatively thin, having a thickness of for example 1 - 2 cm. The central middle part 11 is thicker than the arms 10, for example 0,5 - 1,5 cm thicker. The protrusion 7 stretches out perpendicularly to the surface of the central middle part 11 towards the inside, making the girth 1 in the area where the protrusion 7 is located an additional 0,5 to 1,5 cm thicker than in the areas of the central middle part 11 without the protrusion 7. . This means that the height of the protrusion 7 is for example 0,5 to 1,5cm. It should be noted that any desired thickness can be selected for each of the three areas: the arms 10, the central middle part 11 and the protrusion 7, and in particular any desired height of the protrusion 7 can be selected, for example based on the horse on which the girth should be used.
Figure 10 shows a schematic cross section of the central middle part in the longitudinal direction of the girth along the line IX-IX drawn in figure 5. In this schematic cross section it is visible that the central middle part 11 of the girth 1 according to the invention has a gradual recess 15 on both sides of the protrusion 7. The maximum recess is found in the immediate vicinity of the foot of the protrusion 7, on both sides of the protrusion 7 and extends along essentially the full length of the protrusion 7. This recess allows the central middle part 11 to bend on either side of the protrusion 7 when the protrusion 7 is pressed against the sternum of a horse thus enabling the central middle part 11 to lie against the horse's chest. In an embodiment of the girth according to the invention, the recesses in the central middle part on either side of the protrusion of the girth essentially have the shape of a segment of a circle or a polygon in which the chord mainly coincides with the length of the protrusion 7. As shown in figure 4, the wider area 9 when viewed in cross section in a direction transverse to the length of the girth 1, i.e. parallel to the protrusion 7, even if a bit bent inwards from the main plane in the direction 12.
As shown in figure 5, the arms 10 of the band 2 in the central middle part of the band 2 are slightly bent towards the wider area 9 in the direction 13. This results in the band 2 having essentially the shape of a W.
Figure 9 shows the outer surface of the band 2 with the buckles on both end zones in more detail. This shows that on a central point in the longitudinal direction of the girth an extra loop 14 is provided for example for attaching side reins. It should be noted that the various features of the girth have all been shown in one embodiment of the invention. It should be clear though, that any combination of these features can be applied.
It should also be noted that the invention is not limited to the embodiment shown in the figures, but also comprises any embodiment of the girth covered by the attached claims.

Claims

A girth (1) for a saddle, comprising a long band with an inner surface that is designed to rest against the chest of a horse, having a middle area (11) in the vicinity of the longitudinally central part of the girth that exhibits an increased width and thickness, whereby the wider and thicker middle area (11) comprises an oblong protrusion (7) of which the longitudinal direction is essentially
perpendicular to the longitudinal direction of the girth (1).
Girth according to claim 1, whereby the widened and thickened middle area (11) comprises a recess (15) on either side of the protrusion (7).
Girth according to claim 2, whereby the maximum depth of the recess lies in the direct vicinity of the foot of the protrusion (7) on either side of said protrusion along essentially a major part of the length of the protrusion (7). .
Girth according to claim 2 or 3, whereby the recesses (15) on both sides of the protrusion (7) in top-view exhibit the shape of a semi-circle or a part of a polygon with a chord that essentially coincides with the longitudinal axis of the protrusion (7)·
Girth according to one or more of the preceding claims characterised in that the protrusion (7) has a hardness that enables it to exert the intended pressure on the horse's sternum .
Girth according to one or more of the preceding claims, whereby the protrusion (7) has a width between 2-5 cm.
Girth according to one or more of the preceding claims, whereby the protrusion (7) has a length between 3-10 cm.
