Definitions
- the invention relates to a heating item for surface coverings, generally designed for covering room walls and floors.
- heating systems In the field of building, heating systems have been long known which are formed from a piping network arranged between the concrete slab and the ceramic or wood covering the slab, and which irradiate the rooms from below using the floor covering as a radiating surface.
- ceramic tiles which are themselves heating elements, as they have special technical features that allow them to generate heat and radiate it into a room through their exposed surface.
- the heating floor is composed of a series of tiles, each having its own electric heating module, connected to a power source.
- the heating module consists of a series of straight bus bar conductors arranged between an upper substrate and a lower substrate, the latter forming the exposed upper portion and the lower base or laying portion of each tile.
- a Chinese patent CN202947194 discloses an electric heating tile formed from a bulk molding compound.
- a heating element is incorporated in the tile body itself, and is connected to a power source by means of cables that extend from the heating element and project out of the tile body.
- a first drawback, common to both the above mentioned patents, is that the heating elements must be already placed in the tile body as the latter is being formed.
- heating tiles can be only manufactured using a special manufacturing method and special equipment that allows incorporation of the heating part in the tile body, and as a result these heating tiles have very high manufacturing and final costs.
- each tile In the case of tiles made of other materials, such as wood, each tile must be composed of two portions, such as upper and lower portions, which are designed to be assembled, with the heating module or element being fixedly arranged therebetween before assembly.
- the bodies of the tiles formed according to the prior art have considerable overall thicknesses, which means that, when covering existing surfaces, such a bathroom floor or wall, the previous coverings must be removed prior to formation of heating tile coverings, to prevent the finally completed covering from reaching a final thickness that would require further adjustments to doors and repositioning of sanitary fittings.
- the invention has the object to improve the prior art.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a heating item for surface coverings that has a small thickness, such that it can even laid, when needed, over an existing covering without requiring prior removal thereof, and without requiring any adjustment of existing structures.
- a further object of the invention is to provide a heating item for surface coverings that can be formed using known processes and equipment.
- Another object of the invention is to provide a heating item for surface coverings that can be also obtained from pre-formed and finished items obtained by conventional manufacturing techniques.
- the invention relates to a heating item for surface coverings as defined by the features of claim 1 .
- the invention provides a surface covering as defined by the features of claim 10.
- the invention provides a method of making a heating item for surface coverings as defined by the features of claim 1 1 .
- FIG. 1 is a perspective, partially broken-away view of the lower side of a heating item of the invention, in the form of a tile;
- FIG. 2 is a cross-sectional view of the tile of Figure 1 , as taken along a plane ll-ll of Figure 1 ;
- FIG. 3 is a perspective, partially broken-away view of the lower side of a heating tile according to an alternative embodiment of the invention. Detailed description of a preferred embodiment
- numeral 2 generally designates a heating item, namely in the form of a tile, which has a flat body 10 defining an exposed surface 2 and an opposite base or laying surface 3.
- a net of polymeric material is stably applied to the surface 3, and a strip 5 of electrically conductive material, here carbon fiber, is laid over it, both being cut to size to cover substantially the entire surface 3.
- Both the network 4 and the strip 5 are stably attached to the surface 3 by means of a layer 6 of adhesive material which covers both.
- the strip 5 comprises connection means 7, affording series- connection of multiple juxtaposed tiles 1 , and thus forming a covering for a surface to be covered.
- connection means 7 have been schematically and exemplarily shown in Figure 2, as a lip 8 that laterally projects out of a section of the strip 5 and of the body 10 and a corresponding groove 9 formed in the strip 5 on the side opposite to the lip 8 and designed to receive the lip 8 of a contiguously arranged tile therein, to form a seamless electrically conductive connection coupling.
- the strip 5 may be replaced by a grid of wire conductors 21 , designed to be supplied with electric power through respective end contacts 22 and 23 which may also act as means for electrically conductive connection between grids of contiguous tiles.
- both embodiments of the item 1 may have a temperature sensor 13 mounted thereto, which can be connected to a thermostat or a control unit that controls heating of a room or a building in a known manner.
- connection means 7 The operation of the invention is common to both illustrated embodiments and is such that, when one or more items 1 or 20 are mounted to a surface to be covered and are connected by the connection means 7, current is supplied from a power source, typically the power supply system of a building, to a strip 5 or a grid 21 of wires, and heats the latter to an operating temperature ranging from 40 °C to 60 °C.
- a power source typically the power supply system of a building
- Such heating is transferred to the body 2 of the items 1 or 20, which release heat through the surfaces 2 and 3 and radiate heat into the environment in which they are installed, thereby heating it as needed.
- a temperature sensor 13 senses temperature and is connected to a control unit that can control the steps of actuation of the power source, thereby allowing the temperature of the items 1 or 20 to be maintained at user-preset values.
- the item 1 or 20 may be obtained using a known pre-formed and finished item, such as a tile or a plate, by simply applying the polymeric net and the strip 5 or, alternatively, the grid 21 of wires to the base and laying surface 3 of such item, and fixing them with the layer 6 of adhesive material that covers them.
- the invention has been found to fulfill the intended objects.
