Abstract
The present invention proposes a method for operating an image display device, said image display device comprising an internal memory and an automatic surfing function button, said method for operating said image display device comprising the steps of, receiving at least one category characterizing the content of a program in the form of a content identifier describing the contextual category of an event or a program and storing on said internal memory a database of categories in respect of a plurality of programs associated with a given channel in the form of channel-specific program-pertinent information, including total watching duration data of all channels in different categories.
Description
The present invention relates to an image display device having an automatic channel switching function such that the users are automatically offered progressively changing previews of a plurality of channels in the form of an automatically generated channel list.
Digital and interactive TV systems provide a significant amount of TV channels and programs leading to the general outcome that conventional methods for reaching a program content corresponding to the personal viewing preferences of a user from among a plurality of alternatives may become inefficient to the extent it is unperformable in a time-saving manner. Assuming that a TV service may have hundreds of channels, channel surfing might almost take one hour before every single channel is glanced at least once. It is to be noted that a plurality of channels from different countries may be broadcasted in a multitude of categories and an electronic program guide although proving in this respect more efficient, still involves the evident disadvantage of processing time inefficiency for a user in order for examining all the electronic program guide pages.
Accordingly, individual viewing preferences of users can be better processed and more relevant program content can be instantaneously offered to the user without losing the processing time spent in hunting preferable program contents.
Among others, one of the prior art disclosures in the technical field of the present invention can be referred to as WO2009145507, which relates to a method for outputting an EPG and a broadcasting receiver employing the method are disclosed. More particularly, a method for outputting an EPG and a broadcasting receiver employing the method are disclosed, in which the EPG output from the broadcasting receiver includes RSS information to allow a user to easily identify the RSS information from the EPG.
The present invention, on the other hand, provides a system and a method by which an image display device is operated such that users are automatically offered an alternative list of channels in the form of progressively changing channel previews in a category-specific manner. The present invention therefore solves the technical problem of accelerating individual processing of the significant amount of information for a user, by which an automatically generated channel list is offerable.
The present invention therefore provides a system and method by which an image display device is operable to provide automatically generated channel previews upon fulfilment of a predetermined set of conditions as provided by the characterizing features defined in Claim 1.
Primary object of the present invention is to provide a system and method by which an image display device automatically previews a certain number of channels in a time-limited manner such that an automatically generated channel list is viewable upon fulfilment of a predetermined set of conditions.
The present invention proposes a method for operating an image display device, the latter having an electronic memory and an automatic surfing function button. Said method have the steps of, receiving categorical information of different programs in different channels, storing a database of categorical information of different programs in different channels, including total watching duration of each program in a given category for each channel, querying a desirable program category information upon pressing of said automatic surfing function button, determining the set of channels that actually broadcast in the desirable category, determining the set of channels having the highest priority in the set of actual channels that broadcast in the desirable category and automatically previewing the channels progressively in a time-limited manner starting from a channel that has the longest watching duration in the desirable program category.
Accompanying drawings are given solely for the purpose of exemplifying a system and method by which an image display device is operable, whose advantages over prior art were outlined above and will be explained hereinafter in brief.
The drawings are not meant to delimit the scope of protection as identified in the claims nor should they be referred to alone in an effort to interpret the scope identified in said claims without recourse to the technical disclosure in the description of the present invention.
Fig. 1 demonstrates a general flow diagram according to which the image display device of the invention executes the method of automatic surfing.
Fig. 2 demonstrates a general flow diagram according to which the image display device of the invention executes different tasks associated with the automatic surfing function button according to the present invention.
The present invention proposes an image display device enabling a user to reach a TV program according to her/his personal preferences without having to manually process a significant amount of channel and program type information. It is known that digital broadcasting services provide information in regards to the genre of the programs being watched. The genre information may typically define a certain number of categories characterizing the content of a program. A content identifier therefore describes the contextual category of the digital program so as to let the users obtain information as to the classification of an event or a program.
Therefore, a plurality of programs are assigned to various program genres and the image display device stores a database of various programs categorized in the form of a plurality of program genres indicative of the contextual character of the given program and associated with a given channel.
To this end, the image display device of the present invention is fitted with an internal memory so as to store the channel-specific and program-pertinent information, including total watching duration of each program in a respective category for each channel. More precisely, total watching duration is known for each category and a list of channels that presently broadcast a program in a preferred category is accordingly hierarchically definable.
In this way, an automatic surfing function associated with a respective TV panel or remote control button is performed such that the image display device automatically previews the channels progressively in a time-limited manner starting from a channel that has the longest watching duration in the desirable program category. Alternatively, a hierarchical list of channels with the highest priority in the desirable program category and also within a predetermined list of favourite channels can be viewable.
A channel having the highest priority is determined by comparing total watching duration data of all the TV channels as these were broadcasting in the desirable program category according to the time-based preference of the user. For instance, when a given user selects the documentary category as the preferred category at a given time, the image display device will first determine all the channels that currently broadcast documentary content; the channel having the highest priority is defined based on the processing of all the channels’ viewing statistics and the channel having the longest watching duration in the selected documentary category is determined. The image display device then automatically previews those channels in a hierarchical manner until the user interrupts the process upon showing interest in one of the channels being previewed. Alternatively, a hierarchical list of channels with the highest priority in the desirable program category and also within a predetermined list of favourite channels can be viewable. For instance, when a given user selects the documentary category as the preferred category, the image display device may only list the channels that belong to a user-determined favourite list and also presently broadcast documentary content. The channel having the highest priority is, in this case, defined based on the processing of the viewing statistics of the channels that are in the favourite list and the channel having the longest watching duration in the selected documentary category as well as in the favourite list is determined. Therefore, the best option that is currently airing documentary content and having the longest watching duration among the favourite channels is definable.
In a nutshell, the present invention proposes a method for operating an image display device, said image display device comprising an internal memory and an automatic surfing function button, said method for operating said image display device comprising the steps of a) receiving at least one category characterizing the content of a program in the form of a content identifier describing the contextual category of an event or a program, b) storing on said internal memory a database of categories in respect of a plurality of programs associated with a given channel in the form of channel-specific program-pertinent information, including total watching duration data of all channels in different categories, c) querying a desirable program category information upon pressing of said automatic surfing function button, d) determining the set of channels that actually broadcast in the desirable category, e) determining the set of channels having the highest priority in the set of actual channels that broadcast in the desirable category and f) automatically previewing the channels progressively in a time-limited manner starting from a channel that has the longest watching duration in the desirable program category.
According to an embodiment of the invention, after said automatic surfing function is called by pressing the respective button, and during the set of channels having the highest priority in the set of actual channels that broadcast in the desirable category is being previewed, said automatic surfing button can be re-pressed to perform an alternative automatic surfing function, upon which the set of channels having the highest priority and also belonging to a predetermined list of channels can be viewable.
In this regard, the invention ensures that a user will not mine a significant amount of data by way of using the metadata information provided by the TV services and will instead have a chance of reviewing offered channel previews that are listed in a hierarchical manner according to her/his personal preferences. Therefore a user will reach the most relevant content automatically in the quickest way, without getting lost in a multitude of attribute names, types and parameter descriptions as in the case of an electronic program guide.
