Definitions
- This invention relates to lighting fixtures, and more particularly to housing apparatus for lighting fixtures.
- the invention has particular, but not exclusive, application in the field of light emitting diode (LED] based lighting fixtures for commercial, home and industrial applications.
- LED light emitting diode
- LED light emitting diode
- Conventional lighting fixtures comprise a housing to contain the incandescent or fluorescent light source, and are often provided in accepted industrial dimensions to accept fluorescent tubes typically manufactured to standardised sizes.
- fluorescent tubes typically manufactured to standardised sizes.
- several fluorescent tubes are fitted within the housing of the lighting fixture, and one or more reflectors and/or diffusers are employed in an attempt to provide an even light intensity directed over the area to be lit.
- Such fixtures are often manually fixed by bolts or screws provided in the concrete ceiling of a large installation (e.g. warehouse] during construction (to a set size and distance so as to co-operate with international or de-facto standards], or are suspended from such fixings in the ceiling by wire above the area to be lit
- the fixtures may also be fitted or recessed so as to be flush with ceiling tiles.
- LED light emitting diode
- edge-lit lighting panels comprising a strip of LEDs along one edge of the panel are known, and together with waveguides and diffusers provide so called “light tiles”.
- waveguides and diffusers provide so called "light tiles”.
- product JC71276 is a 600mm by 600mm mains driven panel providing 2900 lumens at 4700k (cool white].
- Such lighting fixtures being mounted flush with a ceiling, are not, in general easily accessible for maintenance, repair or replacement. Such work therefore typically requires specialist contractors since removal of optical components, or even other or neighbouring ceiling tiles is often necessary to gain access to the tube or panel or inner circuitry of the lighting fixture.
- a lighting fixture comprising a housing and a cooperating light panel, the housing comprising securing means for securing the light panel to the housing when in a securing position, and circuitry means for powering the light panel thereto, and wherein the light panel and housing are adapted to cooperate by the provision of engaging guidance means.
- the light panel and housing co-operate via the engaging guidance means to enable quick and easy installation and subsequent maintenance, repair or replacement.
- the engaging guidance means comprises a guidance channel or groove and associated reciprocating means in the form of pins, pegs or lugs.
- the guidance channel is arranged to extend horizontally from a first insertion portion to an end stop portion of the housing.
- the end stop portion comprises a recess extending downwards vertically with respect to the horizontally extending guidance channel.
- Insertion of the panel to the housing results in the pins, pegs or lugs and channel cooperating so that the panel may be easily and safely moved from an insertion position to the end stop position.
- the panel may then hinge rotatably about the pin, peg or lug inserted in the end stop recess, enabling electrical access and connections to the panel to be made in a safe and secure manner.
- the guidance channel or groove also comprises a downwardly extending ramp portion extending from the first insertion portion, and optionally an upwardly extending ramp portion immediately preceding the end stop portion.
- the panel may be moved backwards and forwards along the horizontal portion of the channel with the ramps reducing the chance of the panel sliding out of the channel and falling to the floor.
- the lighting fixture housing comprises a base plate having end sections connected by longitudinally extending side members, and wherein each end section is provided with the guidance channel.
- the light panel is provided with the associated reciprocating means in the form of pegs or pins or lugs adapted to engage with the guidance channels of each end section.
- the panel may be provided with the guidance channels, and the housing is adapted with channel reciprocating means in the form of pins, pegs or lugs to engage and co-operate with the guidance channels of the light panel.
- the housing is provided with a battery pack and movement sensor to enable automatic operation in dependence on detected movement in the area of the lighting fixture, and furthermore emergency operation via the battery pack in case of a power supply fault or interruption.
