Description

PROCESS FOR PRODUCING ABRASIVE TAPE REELS
DESCRIPTION
The present patent concerns the field of abrasive tapes and in particular it concerns a new process for producing abrasive tape reels.
In many abrasion, roughing, surface finishing, lapping and similar operations abrasive tapes or abrasive discs are used, which are referred to simply as abrasive tapes here below.
Abrasive tapes are usually constituted by a flexible support on which a layer of abrasive granules in a given size is firmly attached.
The flexible support is usually constituted by paper, cloth, plastic and similar materials.
The abrasive granules are usually constituted by aluminium oxide, carborundum (silicon carbide), zirconia (zirconium oxide), ceramic aluminium oxide.
The abrasive tapes are obtained by cutting very long and very wide rolls or reels in strips: the abrasive granules are attached to the flexible support, whose maximum width is 2 linear meters and whose length is variable, and the flexible support is successively cut in strips having the necessary width and length or according to circular or triangular or other patterns.
During lapping operations the problem arises that the abraded material is not eliminated and forms a layer between the piece to be processed and the abrasive tape, thus making the action of the abrasive tape ineffective.
In order to overcome the drawbacks described above a new process for producing abrasive tape reels has been designed and implemented.
The new process comprises the following steps:
spreading a layer of a base adhesive resin on the the flexible support; distributing or scattering the abrasive granules on different zones using templates or dies;
drying the resin and waiting for the abrasive granules to adhere to the flexible support;
spreading a second layer of bonding resin;
drying the second resin layer.
The flexible support can be constituted by paper with weights A-G, cotton fabric, polycotton fabric with weights FF and J, cloth with weight X and cloth with weight Y and any other type of weight.
The flexible support is unwound from its reel and conveyed towards a first spraying unit or another equivalent device suited to spread a layer of adhesive resin on the surface of the support.
The flexible support coated with adhesive resin then passes through a device suited to distribute or scatter the abrasive granules on its surface.
Said device for distributing or scattering abrasive granules is preferably constituted by an electrostatic deposition device suited to deposit the abrasive granules on the resin layer in a uniform and balanced way.
Said distribution and scattering device comprises devices suited to selectively deposit the abrasive granules on specific areas of the surface of the tape and the resin, meaning on rhomboidal, triangular, rectangular, hexagonal, polygonal and elliptic areas, in such a way as to obtain portions or strips without abrasive granules.
During the use of the abrasive tape, said portions or strips without abrasive granules constitute discharge ways for the abraded material.
According to the invention, the portions or strips without abrasive granules are inclined with respect to the width of the reel tape, so as to facilitate the elimination of the abraded material from the area included between the abrasive tape and the surface being processed. Successively, the flexible support, coated with resin and scattered with granules, is subjected to a drying process, in such a way as to harden the resin layer and definitely fix each granule onto the supporting tape.
Finally, the flexible support with the abrasive granules attached thereto is subjected to a second resin spraying step and to a subsequent drying step. Said second resin layer makes it possible to join each abrasive granule to the adjacent abrasive granules, considerably improving the adhesion of the granules to the supporting tape and obtaining a longer duration of the finished abrasive tape.
According to the invention, a filler layer can be sprayed or spread on the reel tape with abrasive granules obtained as described above.
The enclosed drawing illustrates the new process for producing abrasive tape reels by way of non-limiting example.
Figure 1 schematically illustrates the sequence of the new process.
A layer of adhesive resin is initially sprayed or in any case spread on the flexible support (F), unwound from the reel on which it is stored, by means of special devices (SI).
Successively, the flexible support (F) with the adhesive resin thereon passes through a distribution or scattering device (D) suited to distribute or scatter abrasive granules.
Said device (D) for distributing or scattering abrasive granules is constituted by an electrostatic deposition device suited to deposit the abrasive granules on the resin layer in a uniform and balanced manner.
Said distribution or scattering device (D) comprises templates (M) suited to deposit the abrasive granules on selected areas, for example rhomboidal areas as shown in Figure 2a, in such a way as to obtain portions or strips without abrasive granules. The flexible support (F) coated with resin and with the granules deposited thereon is subject to a drying cycle by means of thermal resistor heaters or infrared ray heaters (El), in such a way as to harden the resin layer and definitively fix each granule onto the flexible support (F).
After said first drying step, the flexible support (F) with the abrasive granules attached thereon is subjected to a second resin spraying step, during which suitable spraying devices (R2) spread a second resin layer suited to deposit mainly among the various abrasive granules.
Said second resin spraying step is followed by a second drying step performed by means of thermal resistor heaters or infrared ray heaters (E2). The abrasive tape obtained in this way is wound on a winding reel.
Figures 2a, 2b, 2c, 2d, 2e, 2f show some examples of deposition of abrasive granules on specific areas of the tape, respectively: rhomboidal areas, polygonal areas, alternating triangular areas with alternating orientation, triangular areas generically in series forming a square pattern, staggered triangular areas, irregular areas.
Therefore, with reference to the above description and the attached drawing, the following claims are expressed.
