  • the center console 18 includes a wireless charging system 20 configured to charge portable electronic devices placed adjacent to a show surface 21 of the center console.

  • the wireless charging indicator may also provide a graphical representation indicating alignment of the power transmission module with the power receiver module, and/or a graphical representation of power transfer to the portable electronic device.
  • the wireless charging indicator 26 may also provide a visual indication of alignment, power transfer, and/or state of charge via multiple light emitting assemblies, each configured to illuminate a respective portion of the show surface 21. Furthermore, the wireless charging indicator may provide an audible and/or tactile indication of alignment, power transfer, and/or state of charge. As a result, an occupant may receive feedback throughout the wireless charging process.
  • FIG. 3 is a block diagram of an embodiment of a wireless charging system 20 having a wireless charging indicator 26.
  • a portable electronic device 30 is placed on the show surface 21 of the center console 18 adjacent to the power transmission module 22.
  • the power transmission module 22 is configured to wireless transfer energy to a power receiver module of the portable electronic device 30, thereby charging the device.
  • a controller 32 e.g., having a processor and memory
  • the controller 32 is configured to adjust an output of the wireless charging indicator to provide an indication of alignment between the power transmission module and the power receiver module, to provide an indication of power transfer from the power transmission module to the power receiver module, and/or to provide an indication of a state of charge of the portable electronic device.
  • the wireless charging indicator includes a visual indicator configured to illuminate the show surface 21 of the center console 18 adjacent to the power transmission module 22.
  • the wireless charging indicator 26 includes a first light emitting assembly 34 extending about the power transmission module 22, a second light emitting assembly 36 extending about the first light emitting assembly 34, and a third light emitting assembly 38 extending about the second light emitting assembly 36.
  • the light emitting assemblies 34, 36, and 38 form concentric rings about the power transmission module 22.
  • each light emitting assembly may include one or more light sources (e.g., light emitting diodes, light bulbs, etc.) and/or a light guide to direct the light from the light sources to the show surface 21 of the center console 18.
  • the light emitting assemblies may be configured to emit light at varying intensities, varying colors, and/or varying frequencies.
  • the controller 32 is configured to instruct each light emitting assembly to illuminate with increasing intensity to indicate alignment between the power transmission module and the power receiver module.
  • the light emitting assembly may be initially in a substantially darkened state.
  • the controller 32 instructs the three light emitting assemblies to emit light of increasing intensity until a maximum light intensity is achieved. Accordingly, the vehicle occupant is provided with a visual indication of alignment between the power transmission module and the power receiver module.
  • the controller is also configured to instruct each light emitting assembly to illuminate in a sequential pattern to indicate power transfer from the power transmission module to the power receiver module.
  • the controller 32 may instruct the first light emitting assembly 34 to illuminate for a desired duration. After the desired duration has elapsed, the controller 32 may instruct the first light emitting assembly 34 to transition to a darkened state, and may instruct the second light emitting assembly 36 to illuminate for the desired duration. Similarly, after the desired duration has elapsed, the controller 32 may instruct the second light emitting assembly 36 to transition to a darkened state, and may instruct the third light emitting assembly 38 to illuminate the for the desired duration.
  • the process may repeat to establish a "ripple effect" emanating from the portable electronic device 30 while the portable electronic device is charging.
  • the controller 32 is also configured to concurrently instruct each light emitting assembly to progressively cycle between an illuminated state and a darkened state to indicate that the portable electronic device is fully charged. For example, the controller 32 may instruct each light emitting assembly to emit light of gradually increasing intensity until a maximum intensity is reached. The controller 32 may then instruct each light emitting assembly to emit light of gradually decreasing intensity until a substantially darkened state is achieved. In this manner, the vehicle occupant is provided with a visual indication of the state of charge of the portable electronic device.
  • the illustrated embodiment includes three concentric light emitting assemblies, it should be appreciated that more or fewer light emitting assemblies may be employed in alternative embodiments. In addition, it should be appreciated that the light emitting assemblies may be arranged in other patterns in alternative embodiments. Furthermore, the controller 32 may be configured to instruct the light emitting assemblies to illuminate in other patterns in alternative embodiments.
  • the wireless charging indictor 26 includes an audio output device 40 communicatively coupled to the controller.
  • the audio output device 40 is configured to provide an audible indication of alignment between the power transmission module and the power receiver module, to provide an audible indication of power transfer from the power transmission module to the power receiver module, and/or to provide an audible indication of a state of charge of the portable electronic device.
  • the audio output device may include a speaker and/or an amplifier.
  • the audible indication may be provided in conjunction with a visual and/or a haptic indication.
  • the wireless charging indictor 26 includes a haptic output device 42 communicatively coupled to the controller.
  • the haptic output device 42 is configured to provide a haptic indication of alignment between the power transmission module and the power receiver module, to provide a haptic indication of power transfer from the power transmission module to the power receiver module, and/or to provide a haptic indication of a state of charge of the portable electronic device.
  • the haptic output device may include an eccentric mass shaker, for example.
  • the haptic indication may be provided in conjunction with a visual and/or an audible indication.
  • FIG. 4 is a block diagram of an alternative embodiment of a wireless charging system having a wireless charging indicator.
  • the wireless charging indictor 26 includes four light emitting assemblies 44, 46, 48, and 50 arranged in a linear pattern. Similar to the light emitting assemblies described above with reference to FIG. 3, the light emitting assemblies are configured to provide a visual indication of power module alignment, power transfer, and/or state of charge.
  • the first light emitting assembly 44 may illuminate when the power transmission module is aligned with the power receiver module, the second light emitting assembly 46 may illuminate to indicating that the portable electronic device is charging, the third light emitting assembly 48 may illuminate to indicate that the portable electronic device is fully charged, and the fourth light emitting assembly 50 may illuminate to indicate a fault condition, such as the portable electronic device not being compatible with the wireless charging system.
  • Each light emitting assembly may include a light source positioned beneath the show surface 21 of the center console 18, thereby illuminating a respective region of the show surface when activated. In certain embodiments, each respective region may appear dark (e.g., the same color as the remainder of the show surface) until the light emitting assembly is activated. While four light emitting assemblies are included in the illustrated embodiment, it should be appreciated that more or fewer light emitting assemblies may be employed in alternative embodiments.
  • the light emitting assemblies may also convey information regarding wireless charging of the portable electronic device to a vehicle occupant by varying the intensity, varying the color, and/or varying the frequency of light emitted by each light emitting assembly.

Abstract
