Abstract

Systems and methods for the three-dimensional population analysis of anatomic structures are disclosed. Various embodiments allow for the consideration of the complete three-dimensional geometry of anatomic structures. Imaging data is converted to a three dimensional surface model through data segmentation and 3-D reconstruction. A statistical shape model is generated from the surface model, and each patient's anatomy may be described as a combination of the average anatomy described in the statistical shape model and a linear combination of the modes of variation. The parameters associated with the modes of variation can be used to investigate anatomical variations and their impact on disease symptoms and/or clinical outcomes. Moreover, patient specific medical devices may be designed based on correlations discovered through analysis of the statistical shape model.
